Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Decision made - I cleaned house and removed any series from my list that I killed in the 2015 series killer challenge (due to being current with those published). Any new books in killed series, I'll call orphan books and will tell you about them in this thread. I also realized I had a couple of series listed that I don't intend on continuing so they were deleted too.

I enjoyed that audio! Amelia Peabody is such a good cozy mystery series and I love the archeology setting. I've read a few random books in the series, but now am hoping to listen to this series in order.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments I found Amelia insufferable. But I love the archaeology. I've removed it from my list, but do people think she gets better?

message 104: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Well I'm officially adding the MaddAddam Trilogy to my series list after reading Oryx and Crake - so, so good.

message 105: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I was looking at my rereads shelf and Crocodile on the Sandbank was on it. I didn't realize that I had read it twice. I don't recall reading it the second time. I only remember bits and pieces of it, so the reread wasn't successful. I doubt I will continue the series since I have way too many on the go that I'm more interested in.

I think the books get better and the other characters are better but Amelia stays exactly the same. If she holds no interest for you then it's probably not worth it.

The second book is even better Lynda!

Ah well, thanks Dawn. Such a shame, but you know sometimes there are characters you just can't deal with.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am listening to the 3rd Amelia Peabody book now. I think she is funny. I am not so sure I would like it so much if I was reading it, but I love the narrator, except for the son's voice right now.

I am still reading MaddAddam #1, but I bought the trilogy already. Good thing I am liking it!

That's great to hear. I'm flying through The Subtle Knife right now, and keep playing with my hold for American Gods, so I might read it sooner than originally expected.

I can't read her, she irritates me so.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I love that she has to make a list of rules for the kid for every outing, and he still managed to do something that she did not think of indicating.

It reminds me of how I used to ask Amy to watch her sisters when I needed to be out of the room for a minute or two (you know those times). Of course, it was my intention that she keep her eyes on them and keep them out of danger or try to stop them from doing something she knew they should not be doing. Nope - she took it literally. I would come back and chatch them doing something and say "I thought you were watching them". She'd say. "I was".

I just finished the second book and was actually a bit disappointed. The story just didn't flow like in the first one. I found it quite boring, TBH. But will continue and finish the trilogy, just to find out what happened next, as the second book ended in a sort of cliffhanger.

I agree with you Camilla. It's flow is very different to the first book. Not as good as the first one IMO but i was still able to enjoy it despite having to get to know a whole new cast of characters. I was very disappointed with the last book though. I felt that one of the main characters changed significantly between book 2 and 3 and it annoyed me so i never did finish reading the book. I wonder whether there was just too big a gap between Atwood writing book 2 and book 3.

message 116: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2099 comments @Sarah: yes, I actually noticed that you DNF'd the third one. I think I will at least try, if for no other reason than to kill the series. But I'm not in a great hurry, unless somebody has an idea where in the Geo challenge to fit the third book, LOL. I used the second one for the apocalypse goal.

Sarah | 18550 comments It has a bird on the front cover (my edition did).

message 118: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments It seems to be a universal agreement (at least amoung those I know) that the third book isn't as good.
I did finish it but it wasn't up to the standards of the first two.

Camilla | 2099 comments Sarah wrote: "It has a bird on the front cover (my edition did)."

LOL, now that you mentioned it I noticed that I actually had it marked for that goal... Based on the ISBN it should be the edition that our library has.

I gave the 2nd one a peek, and noticed the same thing, but not ready to start right back in yet.

I hate that! What happens to those authors? They didn't have enough for three books and got stuck trying to drag the story line out? Just shoot me now, since I already bought the trilogy. Grrrrrr.

message 122: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I didn't buy it, but I'm committing to the trilogy - it's disappointing when an author doesn't end the story well, though.

message 123: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I finished my first series this year, The Girl in the Spider's Web, to kill off the Millennium Trilogy Series. I rated it 3 stars, but it was probably a 3.5 star read for me. Like everyone else has mentioned, Lagercrantz isn't Larrson, so that little spark of magic was missing. I was a bit disappointing in the re-introduction of Salander, and I'm a bit disappointed in the ending. I do think he had a good handle on Blomkvist, though.

Overall I enjoyed the mystery, and the story of little August in particular. I do feel like elements such as the internal workings of the NSA should have been more compelling. The drama within the Swedish police force was underwritten. Because of these things the big reveal lacked a bit of a punch, but it was still a satisfying scandal.

I think to book was popular enough, that I would be surprised if they didn't continue to series, which I'll likely read, but maybe not as urgently.

message 124: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I think we are gluttons, Lynda. We don't like em, especially, but can't stop reading em, huh?

I finished my orphan Stephanie Plum last night. It was good and bad for all the same things as the last 10, but there were a few slight updates.

message 125: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Maybe it's like comfort food? We know we could do better, but we're just going to eat it anyway.

message 126: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished my first Orphan book, Tricky Twenty-Two. It was a little better than I expected. Still the same old lines about all of the main characters that she puts in all of her books, but a few changes are hopeful and I did get some good laughs. (view spoiler)

But, I couldn't stand it. I started reading MaddAdam #2.

Colleen (colls) | 114 comments One month into 2016's killing spree and I killed one series (Dublin Murder Squad) only to find there's now another book in it scheduled to be published later this year. So it becomes an orphan, right? LOL

I made progress on October Daye by reading #8 The Winter Long and started two new series by reading The Sunday Philosophy Club & The Winter Prince.

The Sunday Philosophy Club is exactly what you'd expect if you ever read any of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency books and enjoyable if you like cozy mysteries. I picked up The Winter Prince because I loved loved LOVED the author's other books, Code Name Verity & Rose Under Fire, and while it's well written, it's just not grabbing me like her WWII books. Being a different genre might have something to do with it, but I read a lot of genres so I was somewhat surprised that I didn't care for it much.

I loved Oryx & Crake and was disappointed in the 2nd book as well. It wasn't bad, just not as good as the first. I've not read the 3rd and am not sure I'll ever get to it. I've not heard good things about it - which is sad because otherwise Margaret Atwood is one of my favorite authors.

I think most people are calling them orphans.

Sarah | 18550 comments Glad to hear there's another French book out. I've only read the first one in the series but I do really like her style.

message 132: by Susan (new)

Susan Guard | 695 comments Just finished up The Dirt on Ninth Grave by Darynda Jones. Fun catching up with Charley Davidson. This one was a little orphan book left over from the serial killer challenge last year. I need to work on wrapping up some of my series. I've gotten a little distracted by the 2016 challenge.

message 133: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Totally understandable, Susan!

message 134: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin (ct_hughes55) | 96 comments Like Susan I will also be reporting here once I finished. Though I don't have a separate list for series only.

I just finished the Mara Dyer Series
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer Read in 2015
The Evolution of Mara Dyer Finished in January 2016
The Retribution of Mara Dyer Finished in February 2016

I started the Maggie Quinn Series as part of the Geocaching Challenge and I have one book remaining. It will probably be knocked out next month!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am crazy but started Staked, which is the new Iron Druid book. I was only going to read the introduction, but couldn't stop there.

message 136: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments LOL! You didn't really think you could stop at the introduction, did you?

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice wrote: "LOL! You didn't really think you could stop at the introduction, did you?"

No worries now. I finished it! I was working from my daughter's house today. Ryan could not go to school and her day care person had already made plans to be gone for the morning until her kids got home from school. He has infections in both ears and a fever. I had no meetings and not much work, so I spent most of the time reading my book and answering email requests. Ryan played on his iPad while laying on the couch or sat at the table with me watching videos.

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm going for a series kill with The Last Town then I can wipe Wayward Pines series off my list. Just as well as I've started a few more series this year already :-)

message 139: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments I really liked that series Sarah! Enjoy!

message 140: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished my re-read of The Bat so I could count it on the Geo Challenge and I also finished #14 in the Aubrey/Maturin series. #15 was available, so I snatched it up from the library. I have a couple of longish books to read for Canada, so I my series will have to linger some more.

message 141: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished The Truelove and need to look and see where I can put it on my Geo challenge. I think there is somewhere that says water on the cover. I probably had another book slotted there, but this one will work too.

I am still reading the 2nd MaddAddam book. It is confusing the way the chapter headings reference the year. I cannot tell if it is after the virus "event" or before because things keep going back and forth. I cannot imagine listening to this one.

message 147: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I actually guessed what would happen unfortunately. One of the reasons I gave it 4 stars. I'm pleased with the ending though. I preferred it to the TV series ending.

Aaargh, I have it currently from the library, but need to finish a couple of books that I need to return asap before I can start reading it.

message 149: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Personally i think I'd have preferred book 2 to have been longer and incorporate book 3 in to it. I know book 2 left us on a big cliffhanger so i was pleased to find out what happened but book 3 was short - under 300 pages.

message 150: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2099 comments I can't wait, have to start reading it this evening!
