Freda Malone | 418 comments The school has got the boys reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and I'm beside myself. I am trying to read this book myself and I can't even get past page 10. The writing style is so sophisticated and reads like it is from mars. My brain hasn't been trained to read a classical like this. I didn't even watch the movie. Suffice it to say, my boys and I are stuck catching up this weekend, reading and re-reading paragraphs to comprehend the language itself. I'm so ready to toss it but my child will fail this semester if we don't do this. I love the teacher but hate his choice of curriculum. He has managed to take my love for reading and discussing a book to a whole new level. God! Get me through this! :P

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments I would think kidneys are super tough, Kath. Am I right?

Now we're talking--MASHED POTATOES!!! You gotta leave some lumps in them though. And some seasoned salt and garlic powder along with milk and REAL butter jazzes them up nice. Not too runny though--that ruins them.

Freeeeeeeeeda!!!!!!
TKAM is a real treasure once you get into it, Freda. Keep trying!

message 4254: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 235 comments Lamb kidneys are surprisingly tender. They add something great to a steak and kidney pie too, of course. My husband hates them. He reckons that you can tell from the taste what they were used for before!

Ter'e Crow Lindsay (terecrow) | 798 comments Freda,
Kind of off the beaten path.......
I lived in Monroeville for 5 years. never got to meet Harper, however.
I used to go to the courthouse and hook my rugs. Then, one year they did the TKAM play and performed it outside and inside the courthouse. It was simply magnificant. It was like you were in the courthouse, seeing the trial firsthand. So thrilling. Some of the cast of players would be sitting right next to you. TKAM took on a whole new dimention for me.

Right after that, I started hooking a huge TKAM rug. There had been this huge mural on a building downtown. Luckily, I shot several pics of it. A week later, the stucco all fell off the wall. Thak God I had the photos.
The big rug is about halfway finished now.........once done, I am going to see if I can sell the rug to the city.

I am not from Monroeville and have no ties there. I am just not a good enough person to donate a $3000 rug to them. Plus, it usually takes me a year a rug! I do not get to sit very often.........
It's a wonderful story.

I make Menudo from scratch!!

message 4260: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Tripe, triple gag, TT. I am almost afraid to ask what Menudo is...
OK, what is it?

message 4261: by Ter'e (new)

Ter'e Crow Lindsay (terecrow) | 798 comments Menudo us a soup that the Hispanics make after boiling the hell out of their tripe. Tripe is that honeycomb lining of the cows stomach. You have to boil it, pour the water off, boil it, repeat about 6x. LOL. The RIPE odor goes away.
Then you make a soup base using tomatoes, tomato sauce, hominy, onions, various spices. It is positively delicious and very beneficial if you happen to have a hangover.
Once your soup has cooked, you add fresh diced onion, Mexican oregano, peppers and lime.
OMG.......my mouth is salivating.
I have a great restaurant, closeby, that makes very good Menudo. The best I have ever had was at a restaurant called Dona Maria Tamales, in Las Vegas. Of course, you chase it down with a good margarita or a Michilada!!!!! MMMMMMMMMMM

Nope Autumn. Lived there 5 years and moved back to FL. Frankly, I hated it. There is still such an expanse between whites and blacks there......Monroeville has never risen out of the old south. Right down the road, the clan was very, very active.
I was raised in California. I believe we all put our pants on the same way.
Living there really depressed me. Some things you just cannot change.

Jean | 2387 comments Huh? How do you get from clam chowder to kidneys??? Oh, never mind - I didn't see the whole thread. Can't keep up!
And why do we need a special "common courtesy day"??? Shouldn't that be EVERY day? Yes, NE clam chowder is yummy! Don't care for clams, really, but I love clam chowder. Must be the cream (-:

message 4283: by Jean (new)

Jean | 2387 comments Hmm, I wonder if there's a flight out of RST to ? What airport, Ter'e? For our dinner tonight?
My mom used to throw the turkey giblets in the gravy. I liked it, but I don't think I'd eat just kidneys.

That makes me sad to hear that. I was born and raised in Alabama and proud of it. I lived in a little farming community outside of a small town, and now live in a college town. I love being in the South, am a proud Southern Belle, proud of my Confederate heritage (member of the Daughters of the Confederacy), and love being from Alabama. I used to want to live in some big city like New York, but then I thought... nope... pretty proud to be part of the history of the South. It may not all be pretty, but there is history here.
