Amber Martingale Had an unwanted mini vacation yesterday. A water main broke and the library closed at 11. I didn't make it to the library until about 1/2 past 12 after helping set up the East Belleville Twigs site.

Twigs is a program where school age children get a daily sack lunch and a book to read. The church I attend on a semi-regular basis, Trinity UCC (United Church of Christ), is partnered with several other Belleville churches and the program originator which is a church located in Granite City to bring food to kids who wouldn't otherwise have a lunch now that school is out. The lunches are given out from 11:30 in the morning to 12:30 PM, Monday through Friday, rain or shine until July 27th.

We were supposed to start LAST Monday but we pushed it back till yesterday due to a couple organizational problems.

Daniel Kemp (goodreadscomdanielkemp) | 5275 comments That's a worthy cause and something I was not aware was needed here in the British Isles until very recently. When I attended school mothers never went to work, but nowadays it's commonplace worldwide. I now realise that children on holiday have nobody at home to prepare a lunch for them. Good luck to you and all who help out.

Amber Martingale Different reason for the need here in the US, Daniel. It's not because the mother's work that kids not in school for the summer don't have food. It's the fact that the politicians, especially Republicans, are BUTCHERING the programs that ensure hungry kids get fed before the school day starts, in school at lunch and; via SNAP (food stamps), have food to eat at home at the end of the school day when school is in session.

When the school year ends, the schools stop feeding their kids, unless you're in summer school which generally offered only to high school students. Plus these same politicians are cutting funding for the SNAP program. Less funds on your SNAP card, the less able you are to feed your kids, even WITH the assistance of a food bank.

Daniel Kemp (goodreadscomdanielkemp) | 5275 comments But I thought America was a wealthy nation and part of the G8. Is American some starving backwater country preferring to keep a high profile military profile and hide the deprived behind its jingoistic foreign policy?

message 9905: by Amber (last edited Jul 23, 2018 12:55PM) (new)

Amber Martingale That's what it's turning into, Daniel. Haven't you followed the news about that jackass named Donald Trump, Jr. in the White House as US President? Oops, sorry. Can't call him a jackass, as it's actually an insult to real jackasses the world over, also known as donkeys.

Technically, the Republican Party's desire to destroy the safety net for the poorest Americans dates back to right after Obama was elected a decade ago... .

The G8 no longer exists. It's now the G7, since Agent Orange, a.k.a. Trump, withdrew the US from the G8. Free Trade is dead or soon will be.

And I don't trust either Agent Orange or Rocket Man as far as I could throw a cheesecake under water.

message 9906: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Kemp (goodreadscomdanielkemp) | 5275 comments Yes, no one can ignore Trump no matter how hard they may wish to. I don't understand your political system but it seems people everywhere vote for isolationism in a world that technology shrinks more and more. No longer do we fear a Russian first strike, now we fear our neighbours more.

message 9907: by Amber (last edited Jun 12, 2018 12:44PM) (new)

Amber Martingale He would never have won had we SWITCHED to the popular vote system the rest of the democratic world uses, rather than the damn Electoral College system, though if we were still using the Electoral College as the US Constitution laid out, Hilary would have become the Vice president, because as it was written political parties were BANNED and the candidate with the second highest number of votes in the Electoral College would become VP.

I STILL fear a first strike from our enemies. Blame growing up BEFORE glasnost and the fall of the Berlin Wall for my attitude. I was born in 1978, during the height of the Cold War.

But back to Twigs. Churches can't take up ALL the slack anymore and haven't been able to since BEFORE the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Countereformation. We can no longer invoke the Wrath of God upon political leaders who DO NOT do as Jesus said we should do which was to feed His sheep and tend His flock.

How fitting. I'm doing a "Halloween in June" theme and this song is so appropriate of how I feel about American politics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYqi_... It really IS the end of all hope.

message 9908: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Kemp (goodreadscomdanielkemp) | 5275 comments No, being born twenty-nine years before you leads me to believe there is only hope left.
I should not quote the Bible to someone who practises religious belief but nevertheless,-- And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. However, as love between races and those who believe in either a different God or way of life is dead, all that's left is faith and hope and they are more-or-less the same.

message 9909: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale That's religious hope. There is no POLITICAL hope left, at least not in the US.

message 9916: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Not until tomorrow, Christine. I volunteered for the Friday shift at Douglas Elementary School. But yeah, I made it to the library on Tuesday.

message 9917: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) That's great that you volunteer at the elementary school, Amber.

message 9918: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Thanks, Kirsten. Of the two sites, it was the one I could get to best on foot. The other one is on the other end of town, a trip of more than 12 miles, which I can't do on foot...not with this year's first Heat Advisory about to smack down on us at noon tomorrow.

A little more time on goodreads as I have a little more free time as signed off with a prolapsed disc in my lower back.

Seems lately life is always so hectic and not been online so much with tennis, watching tennis, watching world cup (only time I watch football) lots of gardening and too much work !

Work is exhausting and often very tired but still busy all the time..

So close to retiring, I can see light at the end of the tunnel...just.
