Aindrea (the_book_monger) Just wanted to say hi. I just joined the group so I wanted to do a quick intro. I'm from Alaska married with 3 kids. My top genres are fantasy and historical fiction but I branch out a lot. I look forward to this group and I hope to participate soon and often.

I do enjoy Neil Gaiman! I have not read all of his stuff but what I have read, I have enjoyed. The Graveyard Book was great! I loved The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and Stardust. His book American Gods and the tie in for it, Anansi Boys were both awesome! I love the American Gods tv show as well.

Prachi (prachikreads) Hello! I came here to cheer up. Today has been such a mess. I faceplanted into a mud puddle, which is about as lovely as you would expect, and I cut my knee. Does anyone have a book that they love as a rec?

Melissa Palmer | 1 comments I'm close to finishing a goal to read a biography about each US president in order of their terms of service. As I get to the more recent presidents there seem to be LOTS of great biographies. Does anyone have a good suggestion for George H.W. Bush or Bill Clinton?

Yamin Eaindray (yamineaindray) Hello, guys! I'm halfway through The Song of Achilles and I'm LOVING it. I ordered Circe but I have to wait until 22nd of August to enjoy it so in the mean time, I'm looking for recommendations in that genre (other than Percy Jackson). I checked out Sirena by Donna Jo Napoli, the David Gemmell trilogy, and Inside the Walls of Troy by Clemence McClaren but I'm not sure about buying them yet. Not a huge fan of YA, with the main theme being romance, just a good book with great description, plot, characters, and an overall interesting read. Thanks!

I love the library! I only buy hard cover books I'm pretty sure I will re read or give as gifts. I'm a real sucker for the GoodReads and Kindle *daily deals*. I also download freebies, especially the classics.

message 363: by Tucker (new)

Tucker Almengor (tuckeralmengor) @rhr I get the kindle freebies and buy a lot of books. but i use the library the most.

Kandice I use the library a ton. I use Overdrive and Libby for ebooks and audiobooks, but do occasionally check out actual books. I also attend and run a group that meets in the library monthly. Even with all of that I still buy a lot of books, but would never be able to buy everything I read.

I LOVE the library.

At least Amazon usually has cheap used copies! I think I've only bought one book in the past years that was full price and that was because I absolutel HAD to have them the second they were released lol.

Tucker Almengor (tuckeralmengor) Does anyone ever get overwhelmed by their TBR? Like, I'll be reading a book. And I'll want to start another book. This happens over and over. Any tips/suggestions?

Lisa (lml369_07) | 1048 comments Mod
Tucker, I have never tried thriftbooks but I have heard many wonderful things about it! I need to try it!

Yes, I constantly get overwhelmed by my TBR but what I always tell myself is that my reading is my hobby, not my job. The whole reason I read is to escape from the stress of reality and stressing myself out by all the books I want to read just seems counter productive. So, I get all the books I want/can and I set them on my shelf and when I look at them and start feeling that stressful 'Oh my gosh, I have GOT to read that soon' I suppress that and replace that thought with 'Those books are there for me to enjoy when the time is right and I will get to it when I get to it.' I hope that helps a little!

@Tucker I love thriftbooks.com! I've been able to replace several favorite out of print books and they are always in good condition. Sadly I'm running out of room for print books so I'm forces to buy e-books. I read 3-5 books a week...that's a lot of square footage. My library doesn't have the best selection but it is getting better.

message 376: by Tucker (new)

I know what you mean! It doesn't take long. I just built a floor to ceiling bookcase that holds almost 500 books and already need another one. Room is a real issue.

Heather I just went to our local used book store tonight. I got 5 paper backs for about $13. Three of one of my favorite authors, Lisa Scottoline and 2 new authors for me, Anne Perry and Kathy Reichs.

I use all venues- library, used, Amazon and Kindle!

Raghav wrote: "Anybody knows how I can read books, fast, and even during a tight schedule? All suggestions welcome!"

I suggest Audiobooks. I don't always have time to sit down and read but I can always (excluding when I'm in the office) plug in my headphones and fly through an audiobook while I'm cooking, working on house or yard work or working out. :)

message 385: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I listen to audiobooks as well. I get them through Libby or Overdrive on my phone and listen in the car or while doing "chores" like Lisa said. You'd be surprised how quickly you get through one. I have also recently discovered that with Overdrive, you can speed up the playback. I don't go crazy with it, but some readers read so slowly you can listen at 1.4 speed and not feel rushed. Even quicker!

Manga/Anime is not something I have ever ventured into. Not that I think I wouldn't like it, it just hasn't piqued my interest enough to pick it up. I know there are some really great serious though and I would definitely read through them if the opportunity presented itself.

Mystic Orange (Rumell) (rkrespectedmember) I guess Anime/Manga is least of my favourite genres. They are very tacky to me.

message 394: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (wbandel) I've read/watched a ton of anime and manga. I can definitely see why people might have problems with it. It is very difficult to break into and find the hidden gems under all the mainstream noise.

If anyone is interested in manga but has hated it before, I'd suggest reading "Pluto". It's a mystery sci-fi thriller that doesn't have all the typical trappings of the medium.

Speaking of graphic novels, the genre I can't seem to get into is superheros. I've tried watching superhero movies, reading comics, etc. I just can't seem to find any I actually like at all. I think the closest I came was appreciating Watchmen.

Until I got to the end of your post, I was all ready to suggest Watchmen! That is one of my favorite books of all time and not what people usually think of as a comic.

I can also suggest Moore's V for Vendetta, Preacher by Garth Ennis and Sandman by Neil Gaiman. None are super heroes per se, but both have fantasy elements and are fantastic.

There's also Fables by Mark Buckingham.

Kandice Rumell wrote: "I guess Anime/Manga is least of my favourite genres. They are very tacky to me."

I've never been able to get into Manga either, but don't understand the "tacky" description. Some are really beautiful. There have been a few adaptations of narratives I already likes, such as the Max series by James Patterson, Twilight by Meyers (yeah, yeah...) and Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. Sometimes it's fun to see someone else's idea of characters you already know and love.

Whitney (wbandel) Kandice wrote: "Whitney wrote: "Speaking of graphic novels, the genre I can't seem to get into is superheros. I've tried watching superhero movies, reading comics, etc. I just can't seem to find any I actually lik..."

Thanks Kandice! I've given some of those series a try already. Some are hit or miss, some I really like (Fables). Somehow it seems to depend on how they fit into the "superhero" spectrum. Some of it also seems to depend on the amount of action. I tend to space out in comics, books, or movies if the only thing happening is battles. A lot of the graphic novels I do like tend to be autobiographies, journalistic studies, or fantasy.

Comic adaptations are a lot of fun. I've seen some around for A Wrinkle in Time and Pride and Prejudice. I didn't realize Carry On had one, but I could see that fitting well.

I am new down here.
Very general question: Could you guys please recommend me the best books you have every read?

P.S. I am currently reading The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare

message 399: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Whitney, I don't care for comics that are all action either. The "Wham", "Pow", "Bam" variety.

I also love Saga, Vol. 1 and Y: The Last Man, Vol. 1: Unmanned. Both by Brian K. Vaughan.

Do you mean like our favorite top 10 or something? I am a very eclectic reader, but not everyone is, so what kind of fiction do you like? At least that would give us a starting point.
