Going through vacations e-mails is the worst thing about taking a vacation haha. I saw a lot of people I follow on Twitter posting about the WonderCon Kandice! It looked like a blast! I so wish I had enough money to travel to all these cool events. One day!

I love storms but I hate when they get serious. Give me wind and lightening and thunder and pouring rain. Hail, tornadoes, and flooding? No thank you. I do wish it rained here more though. I could definitely live in a place like Seattle where it just rained all the time. Glad y'all are safe!

Hello everyone! I feel like I have been stuck under a rock the past few weeks! Life has just been so busy I can't seem to keep up. I haven't even read in like 5 days! AAHHH!! Anyways how is everyone doing? How's life been treating you all?

Jenny (mentha) | 333 comments I have a little dispute with the online NetONet shop who sent me broken earphones, so I send them back, and then send another set with just the same who are also broken back. Sending those back without wanting an other return costs a lot of money. I'm pissed. Those were supposed to be a present and now my budget just halved.

A guy asking for donations tried to guild trip me into donating and was very, very persistent. Nearly impossible to get rid of politely. I snapped and told him whats up in the most measured and well articulated argument I've ever shot at anyone ever. No one guild trips me into anything, no matter how honourable the cause.

Now I feel bad, he had no way to know that he talked to the wrong person (though I suspect him of having bullied the syrian beggar away who used to sit on his spot.) And on the other hand I'm proud because that was by far the best articulated argument I've ever shot at a stranger ever. I have conflicted feelings.

Grr. There's not a lot worse than not being able to just march into a store and demand a return, especially when their charging you out the bum just to return it. I hope it gets figured out soon!
And don't feel too bad. You can't save the world no matter how hard you try. And you should be proud of yourself! People who are asking for donations should not heckle a person for money. Just breath and leave it in the past!!

Jenny (mentha) | 333 comments It was terrible. Like "Do you know how many children don't go to school?" "Can't you see my body language means I'm trying to avoid you?!" I mean, he looked so shocked after he had done the first part of his pitch I started to make assumptions, his face getting more shocked every time I hit the mark and than got back to the original point. I felt like Olivia Pope going all "You started with asking my age from which I can only assume you don't just want me to toss you my spare change but want me to do this on a monthly bases but by not mentioning this until the last moment will make it more likely that I accept simply because I by then already agreed to donate. This is a textbook suckerpunch tactic based on the social pressure you're trying to employ here. Guess who is not up for that kind of nonsense?" without stuttering or blushing. It took less than 3 minutes but when I finally told him that "No, if I want to donate, I'll find an organisation myself" and walked off, a couple of people were staring. Not at me but at him. I guess there is something in being a huge, well groomed man bun sporting guy getting chewed out by a 5'4 scruffy girl holding an arm full of bananas. It felt GREAT but I should not do it again I think. Reacting out my anger to strangers who do not really mean harm is not a nice thing to do. My mum raised me better. Its also that there is not a change that I ever again will be in a mood so far past caring that I can pull something like this off again without starting to cry. XD The whole online shop business had used up all the fucks I could give and I won't stand for being screwed over more than once a week. I imagine this is what narcissists feel like XD

Hey!! How is everyone doing? I feel like a lot of us have been busy so I just thought I would check in to see how it's going with all of you lovely people!

We've been extra busy and extra broke this month but we're making it through and doing the best we can. I've had a bit of a break from motherhood the past week as my parents took my daughter for the week to get some quality time with her before school starts. I thought this was going to be a relaxing week but my dogs made sure that didn't happen. Our larger dog thought it might be a fun idea to see what the neighbor's yard is like and broke a hole through the fence and thought my neighbor's gardening tools would be the best chew toys ever. (-_-) After this fiasco we get a citation from Animal Control and they told us since we could prove ownership and that he was all up on vaccinations we would not have to pay a fine. Well the city thought otherwise and sent us a $440 bill for said citation. We are currently in discussion with Animal Control and the city to see what happened and hopefully get out of this ridiculous fee. Now that my dogs are inside so they do not cause more trouble for the neighbors or us, they have reverted to chewing on everything in sight. We have ordered some kennels from Amazon to keep them contained while we are at work but it will be about another week before they get here so keep your fingers crossed that our couches stay intact! They sound like horrible creatures but they are actually really great dogs, they are just young and energetic and still going through some puppy problems. I'm just thankful they are house trained. At least I don't have to deal with cleaning THAT up everyday after work. Yikes!

Anyways, aside from that, I have been trying to use my little window of free time each evening to catch up on the great books I am reading. The Way of Kings is the first Brandon Sanderson book I have ever read and oh my gosh it is amazing. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone if you're willing to put in the time for a large book. This is the first book in a trilogy so it's a big time investment but from what I have read with this first book, I think it's totally worth it.

Hope all is well with everyone! <3

Yes!! I had a great past couple of months there where I was reading like crazy and getting some R&R but then all the sudden life was like 'RESPONSIBILITIES!!' and I have barely picked up any of my books the past couple of weeks. I'm hoping I'll get some time this weekend to read but who knows what life has in store this time haha. Glad you're doing well!

Anyone planning on going to the movies anytime soon? I'm going to go see John Wick 2 tomorrow because my husband and I are way overdue for a date night. I think it's going to be great!

Yes and Yes!

We loved the movie!! I am always a fan of Keanu and he did a great job in this one. I think it was just as good as the first one and I really enjoyed watching Keanu drive a his car like an angry professional maniac. <3

And yes the thread is actually just about to be posted! I was literally just thinking about this at lunch and planned on doing before the day was out. I'll get it up now and send out a group message! Thanks for helping me stay on top of stuff haha

I hope you two enjoy the movie and you'll have to let us know what you think about it!

message 277: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I forgot to say that I really liked La La Land. Not as much as my daughter, who LOVED it, but a lot. The soundtrack is amazing.

My son saw the Batman Lego movie today and liked it so much he wants to go again with me. I liked the first Lego Movie, so I'm game.

That's great to know!! I think we're going to try and take my daughter to see the Batman Lego movie this weekend (paycheck permitting) I still want to see La La Land but I will probably end up waiting for it to come out on DVD. I've heard nothing but great things about it though!

What I REALLY want to go see is Logan on March 3rd but I don't know if I'll be able to see it opening weekend. Hopefully the weekend after or something though. Man that movie looks brilliant. I think I need to go back and watch some of the other X-men/X-men origins movies though. It's been a LONG time since I've watched those and I've forgotten a lot of things in the interim. Anyone else planning on watching that one?

message 279: by Kandice (new)

Kandice We went to see Lego Batman over the weekend. Second time for my son, first for the rest of us, and while I won't say the plot was amazing, we actually laughed through most of the movie! It was very, very entertaining.

I will probably watch Logan when it's on Netflix or OnDemand, not in theaters.

You had better tell us about Wonder Con when it's all over with! Don't forget those of us who live vicariously through you lol! :D

message 285: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I did NOT get to meet him, but I did sit in the fifth row, center, so was pretty close! I’ve actually seen him three times before this at ComicCon, twice as close as this, but it felt more intimate because of the setting at CC.

The Civic Center has a capacity of 7000 and I did not see a single empty seat! He took questions from people near the front, talked a bit and read excerpts from four books and one poem. He was incredibly charming and it just reinforced how much I love him and why!

I’ll let you know about WC. It’s smaller than CC, so not as exciting, but in a way, almost better because you are almost guaranteed to get into anything you are interested in, whereas as at CC you could wait 30 hours ans still not get into a hall!

Wow that's sounds fantastic! He always seemed like such a charming gentleman. I love his voice too. I listened to the audio book for Stardust that he narrates and I loved it. I wish he would come to little old Lubbock, TX haha. One of these days I'll have enough money to go to all of this great stuff I love!

That is what I like about the smaller cons. Now granted, I haven't been to the big CC but I've been to a couple of bigger ones that were full of long lines for anything and everything. So I can only imagine how crazy CC is. I honestly don't think I know too much about WC. I know I've heard mention of it but I've never looked into what all it entails. It'll be great hearing about your experience there! :)

message 287: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I've gone to CC for years and years. And you know I get there at 7 a.m. or so and stay until 1 or 2 a.m. each of the days, but I am genuinely thinking I may not go this year. I have the days off since I put the request in as soon as the dates are mentioned, but it has really just gotten too big. I like to stay in the convention center and it has grown so much that many of the panels I want to see require walking through downtown to other hotels and venues. I don't mind the walk, but that means you only have time for 4 or 5 things a day instead of 10 or 12. Makes me sad.

Yeah that is one concern I've expressed to my husband. We've had multiple conversations about it and it makes me sad that there would be so many different things we would both want to go see but probably wouldn't have enough time to go to. I wish they could change scheduling or lengthen the event by a couple of days so that it is all more spread out time wise and people are able to have more access to stuff that's going on. Otherwise I would have to choose only one of my top all time favorites in regards to fandoms/actors and that would be way too hard of a decision for me haha. That's like asking me what my favorite book is. I can't answer that!!! XD Well I wish I could take your place at CC this year but I can totally understand why you're not going. Either way, I hope you have a lot of fun!

Been doing well , busy but well. Hope you are doing well too despite any busyness. Summer was crazy for me, I work for an escape room and it was very busy with kids being out of school. I was also entrusted recently to help design our newest room with one of the other game masters and it was stressful but fun. Its been open for about two weeks now and the feedback has been positive so I'm happy with what we did.

That's super cool! I went to one in Fort Worth over the summer and it was really fun! That must be a lot of hard work to put one of those together but it would be super cool to be involved in something like that.

This summer has been awesome and busy! My husband and I spent the better part of the last 8 years of our marriage as home bodies that didn't get out much and didn't have many friends that we did much of anything with because we were new parents who worked all the time. Anyway, thanks to my local Geek Girl Brunch group, we have made some really excellent friends and have been spending lots of time with them and have been having a total blast! It's been so great to have a more social lifestyle now that we're at a place in our lives where that's easier to manage. Not to mention, we have some fantastic neighbors that moved in next door with 2 kids around my daughter's age and they get along great! It's really been a fantastic summer for us!

How has everyone else been?

message 292: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Nikki, I love Escape Rooms! I've been to quite a few, from some very seedy, low budget, but super clever ones, to a couple that obviously have a much larger budget, but aren't more fun. I live in San Diego and they seem to be everywhere here. Where are you?

Was there a theme to the room you helped design? Sounds very, very fun.

I’m in Shreveport Louisiana, they are certainly getting more and more popular! I’ve been to some cool ones down in Baton Rouge and Tickfaw (both in Louisiana). The room we designed is a laboratory it’s called The Malign Experiemnt. It’s was fun but challenging to design. These past few months have been busy design wise. We are also about to open “The Grape Escape” and I’m helping our GM with puzzles a little bit on that one. Closer to thanksgiving we will be opening “Jack Frost’s Revenge” And I’m excited for that one too. I’m not really going to have a hand in that last one but that just means I can beta test it :D.

What are some of your favorite rooms/room themes and places ?

Hello Jean and welcome! Do you mean the group bookshelf? If so, it is where the books that we have read as a group are documented. Similar to your personal bookshelf on your profile that keeps books that you have marked as 'Read', 'To-Read', and 'Want-To-Read', it just keeps a running list of the books that have been added to the group's 'Read' list. Hope that explains it but if not let me know!
