I don't remember much, but it was set in a fantasy world of huge amounts of interstellar space. I think it's YA / sci fi as a book.

I read it about 3 to five years ago, so probably between 2009-2013 and I believe it was a reasonably new release at that point in time. I borrowed the physical copy from a library, and i think it was a hardback copy but my memory may have failed me.

A boy is the main character and he has a mentor, who is notably highly experienced. It turns out that the boy was destined to be the leader of the universe/world and he competes as part of the final 1000 and then as part of the final 10.

He faces some sort of challenge with 9 others and all but him and one other die, with him giving up the opportunity to become leader and goes in a wormhole and finds true love.

Sorry, that's pretty rubbish, but that's all I can remember! :/
