Hey everyone! I haven't really found a group that interested me enough to participate in, but would love to find a smaller group to read with here.Quick Facts!
Name: Jenny
Favorite Books: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, the Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson, the Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfus, Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer, and Nimona (NIMONAAAAAAAAA!) by Noelle Stevenson. I've also been really enjoying the Saga and Ratqueens graphic novels lately.
Favorite Genres: Science fiction and fantasy.
Favorite TV shows: I have to say, I don't watch much television. But I loved The Game of Thrones and Stranger Things. I haven't watched The Expanse, but would really like to since reading Leviathan Wakes (although I have no idea how the show could do the book justice). Let me know if it's worth the time!
Favorite Movies: The Princess Bride! Star Wars, Avatar, Fight Club, Howl's Moving Castle, LOTR.
Favorite Food: Chocolate...with a side of chocolate...drizzled with chocolate.
Job: Emergency Nurse. Currently a full-time grad student.
Hobbies: Reading (obviously), video games (currently playing Undertale, Divinity, and Smite), board games, backpacking/hiking, travel, cross fit training.
Other: I'm from Michigan, but am lucky enough to be able to travel around the country for work. I just finished a job in Alaska and get to spend the winter months in sunny Arizona. That being said, I spend a lot of time reading while on the road. I've never really discussed books with other people, but that's only because I've never met anyone with my same enthusiasm for fantasy/sci-fi. Looking to finish the Southern Reach trilogy next. Starting Authority tonight!
Name: Scott DysonFavorite Books:Lamb by Christopher Moore, The Stand by Stephen King, Foundation novels by Isaac Asimov, too many others to name
Favorite Genres: Horror, SF, Mystery/Thrillers
Favorite TV shows: Don't watch too much tv
Favorite Movies: Lord of the Rings (all 3), Star Wars, Comedies
Favorite Food: probably Pizza
Day Job: Dentist
Hobbies: playing music, reading and writing, watching sports

Welcome to our newest members! Arizona winters are the best, and I am willing to deal with the summers.

Other: I'm from a military family that has moved around a lot. I have a degree in History from UAB. I currently live in Birmingham, AL
Greetings earthlings.I did a literature degree eons ago and came to science fiction late(ish) but now it's becoming my default reading setting however hard I try to prise myself away.
I am still grieving at the passing of Iain Banks. The culture universe was my favourite bolthole.
Just finished watching the first season of Seth Macfarlane's The Orville and it grew on me. Some good cheesy humour in there and a return to Star Treks roots in a way.
A few years back I worked through the top 100 sci fi books in Waterstones so have read all the old classic authors and I loved them. I didn't realise how good some of them were. Phillip K Dick, Alfred Bester, Joe Haldeman. Brilliant.
I've been delving into Alistair Reynolds, Dan Simmons, Niel Arenson, James S Corey, Ian W Sainsbury, Laini Taylor and Jasper T Scott recently but you wouldn't know it as my kindle is set up to a different goodreads account annoyingly.
I've got The world according to Garp lined up next and am looking forward to it.
Just finished I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes which was a fairly fast paced and engaging thriller, though I read it in book form rather than my kindle paperwhite for the first time in ages and I found it really hard. The book felt too heavy and cumbersome. Strange. I used to swear by books and always dissed Kindles. Now I prefer them. I feel ashamed!!
Favourite books are hard and they are influenced by so many variables but I would include Stephen King's The Stand and Steinbeck's The Grapes Of Wrath amongst 100 more.
Favourite book series includes Stephen Donaldson's Gap series (stunning).
I've devoured authors like everyone who reads and amongst those of whom I've read everyone of their books would be Hemmingway, Steinbeck, Jane Austen(!), James Herbert, Stephen King, Clive Barker, Lee Child, Iain Bainks, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Stephen Donaldson, David Baldacci, David Gemmell. Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. To name a few. I love them all.
Nice to be here and looking forward to finding some authors. Can anyone recommend an in your face space opera series?
Paul
Welcome, Paul. Hope we'll be able to help you find lots of new books to love.
I'm not sure what you mean by in your face space opera, but my favorite series is the Honorverse. Not everybody likes it. Weber can get very wordy, especially when describing technology and politics. But it's still a very popular series, with very complex and believable world building, exciting space battles, and compelling characters. Another series you might look at is the Liaden Universe, which is a much looser series, in that it doesn't really need to be read in any order. Also, I think it's not really as well written as most of the Honorverse, but it's still a lot of fun and sometimes exciting.

Welcome, Paul. For what it's worth the Honorverse books were the first series that occurred to me to suggest. Most of the older space opera I read are not series. You might check the thread on unending series https://www.goodreads.com/comment/sho....
Hello!I am 32, from Austria and totally into science fiction, fantasy, humor and science topics and always trying to widen my range.
Hi Paul, I, also, am a literature degree person and I absolutely loved Hyperion series. It has good prose, and the first book is a nod to Canterbury Tales.
Hi Bruyere,I agree. Hyperion is a great read. In fact I'm re-reading it as I enjoyed it so much. I've only re read a handful of books and you know they are good when you do that.
What are you reading now?
Have you tried Stephen Donaldson's The Gap series? Very very dark but engrossing.
Hello. I have been lurking here for a while, but never introduced myself. I decided to get more involved with goodreads (and to read more) so I thought I would introduce myself. I'm a 52 year old IP attorney who read Dune as a young child and it changed my life.
Bo wrote: "Hello. I have been lurking here for a while, but never introduced myself. I decided to get more involved with goodreads (and to read more) so I thought I would introduce myself. I'm a 52 year old I..."That's my mom's favorite book!
I am right now revisiting it via a wonderful audiobook with a full cast and a very effecting (or is it affecting?) soundtrack.
Hello humanoid blobs of mostly water and altered carbon.I vowed I wasn't going back to print. In fact I don't read much (mainly because I'm slow and my sight is rubbish).
But i think I may have over spent:
The print books I was going to continue with were the Expanse. I'm on book 3. I just brought up to 6.
And then I bought more books because I'm an idiot and will struggle to finish them before the end of time: Burning Dark and Machine Wakes (they were really cheap), the Vagrant (not really space opera but what the hell), Creation Machine and Iron Gods, aA Long Journey to a SMall Angry Planet (which everyone raves about), Lazarus War: Artefact, Closed and Common Orbit, and Ancillary Justice.
I also have a bunch of stuff on Kindle because reasons: A Red Peace which looks cool, Dead Run on audible, and other stuff I can't remember.
I will not read these quickly enough to keep up. I wish I could. :D
Welcome new members!
My own TBR and currently reading piles are rather large. I stopped buying dead tree books when my eyes complained too much, but I read on my Kindle a lot (so I buy ebooks a lot).

Hi guys! I'm Francisco from Guatemala, and I'm really happy to find this group.I hope we can't share a good time here reading awesome books!
I'm a huge fan of Star Wars. I read many comics and books of it. I also enjoy religious (catholic) books , young adult novels (Maze runner is awesome), and recently I'm digging into Super hereo's comics.
I'm really not sure about Enders games, some part of me wanna read it and some others doesn't xD so lets see what happends.
Nice to meet you all!
By the way, sorry if my english isn't good, spanish is my firts lenguage, so sorry if I made your eyes bleed xD
Welcome, Francisco. Your English is not that bad. I understood everything you were saying -- and that doesn't always happen even with native English speakers. Good for you for trying.
I love sprawling space operas like The Liaden Universe series and The Vorkosigan Sagas. Also love a strong female main character, military fiction with female leads, stories that have a lot of character development, a little romance thrown in. I am semi retired and just now trying my hand at writing fiction.
I am rediscovering Goodreads. I have had a hard time finding books I want to read. Duh! This seems like the answer!
Welcome new members! We are in the midst of nominations for next month’s group reads, so please feel free to jump in!

Other: I'm a SFR/Space Opera writer. I really enjoy bringing stories to life, and it is so much a part of who I am. But honestly I like soft science not writing/reading hard science since I get enough of that in my daily occupation as an engineering professor.
That's all for now, see you in the forums.
Ah... that makes sense. I love space opera, but haven't seen many good romance stories (except for Cordelia and Miles' father in the Vorkosigan saga... wish they'd had more than two books).
Hi, my name is Nadja now I am from New Jersey. I'm a librarian that loves to read Science Fiction and Fantasy. But really, I love to read everything. I am at home recovering from surgery so I'm catching up on my reading :-)Favorite Books: Too many to count but since we are in space opera territory I would say Peter Hamilton in general and The Night's Dawn series as well as JSA Cory the expanse
Favorite Genres: sci fi , fantasy zombies, paranormal
Favorite TV shows: Too many but let go with Battlestar Galactica Series and Star Trek Series

Nadja wrote: "Hi, my name is Nadja now I am from New Jersey. I'm a librarian that loves to read Science Fiction and Fantasy. But really, I love to read everything. Kirsten wrote: "Ah... that makes sense. Yeah I like Space Opera combined with SFR (Science Fiction Romance). Not many books out there like it, which is why I'm writing my own. However, I do think books like Gender Game by Bella Forest and Cinder by Marissa Meyer are good books. I love the focus on adventure with romance and science all woven into the story.
Nadja wrote: "Hi, my name is Nadja now I am from New Jersey. I'm a librarian that loves to read Science Fiction and Fantasy. But really, I love to read everything. I am at home recovering from surgery so I'm cat..."Hi Nadja, what are your thoughts on the new star trek Discovery series? Honestly I'm a bit disappointed. Only got past like episode 6 and then decided it was not worth it, the story really doesn't seem to be going anywhere, and it feels "darker" than the previous ones. I guess I prefer my Star Trek characters to all be good guys;p Also, I don't like that every episode follows on the previous one. I thought it was much better in the previous series where each episode could almost stand by itself.
Yeah, new Star Treks and other shows are kind of like soap operas in a way. In the 60s-70s, shows were basically all standalone episodes except for special events during sweeps. But now, almost all the shows are serialized. One reason I disliked NYPD Blue and preferred Law & Order was because of the soap opera element.
Hello, everyone. My name is Ben Schafer, and I'm excited to be a part of this group. The novels that got me into science fiction and remain some of my favorites are the old X-Wing series by Michael A. Stackpole and Aaron Allston (don't even get me started on Legends vs. New Canon). Beyond that, everything from Ender's Game to Dune to the Honorverse series by David Weber can be found on my bookshelf.
I'm a fan of anything with a fast plot, solid worldbuilding, and snappy dialogue. I find that being overly focused on the "right" genre can limit storytellers and their fans. That being said, I do find myself attracted to military sci-fi, action-adventure thrillers, and the occasional urban fantasy/action horror titles more often than not.
I don't watch TV as much as I used to, but The Expanse, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, and Stargate SG-1 all fuel for my love of science fiction. My list of movies is too long to list, but the highlights include Star Wars (the whole saga, including the prequels. Yes, I said it), Alien, The Mummy (1999 version), and the whole of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
My day job is nothing terribly interesting, but eventually I'd like to be able to list "Full-Time Author" under that label. I have a few projects I'm working on now, but nothing I'm quite ready to reveal to the world at large. I'm just excited to be a part of a energetic community that can fill my nerdy heart.
Ben wrote: "Hello, everyone. My name is Ben Schafer, and I'm excited to be a part of this group. The novels that got me into science fiction and remain some of my favorites are the old X-Wing series by Michae..."
I love the Brendan Fraser/Rachel Weisz Mummy movies!!
Hello group! I'm getting active again these days online and wanted to definitely spend some time on Goodreads. As many others I have an ulterior motive for coming out here but will definitely follow the rules. And so, based on the instructions I saw:Name: DS Brown
Favorite Books: Tolkien, Clarke, Asimov, Brin, Bear, Simmons, Butler, Due, and more. I'm easy. I just love reading.
Favorite Genres: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Military, Thriller, Horror, Non-Fiction
Favorite TV shows: Right Now - I'm really easy. I don't put up much of a fuss, but if I had to pick: Expanse (someone has GOT to pick this up), Six, Lost In Space, Luke Cage (It's coming and I know it' s gonna be hot, so I have to add), Black Lightning (the musical track adds too much flavor to the story, just sick! I love it!), Star Trek Discovery, I've been rewatching BSG and Farscape, just AWESOME! And some more stuff. You name it I probably can find something redeeming in it.
Favorite Movies: I went to see Star Wars at 7 years of age. It has been a constant companion all my life. Like many I'm not partial to the prequels, was never a fan of the funny, cuddly stuff. Empire was my favorite. But, unlike some I don't practice any kind of hate. I actually enjoyed The Last Jedi. I just can't figure out why these live action folks don't understand taking the power (literally) of the Force and stories from the books and cartoons would make for GREAT cinema. Lost on me. Oh, I really enjoyed SOLO (Like I said, I'm easy). LOTR all time favorite movies. I geeked out when I saw Dark Night for the first time, same feeling I had with the Spider Man (Tobey). I thought, they got it right, finally. I'm not hard on the DCEU or the MCEU. I just like to see superheroes on film. And of course, if I didn't say I LOVE BLACK PANTHER I would have to abdicate my American-African (purposely stated) card. I mean, the move was SICK! Loved it!
Favorite Food: I was a fat kid, before I found sports. I like almost anything, and yeah I love Fried Chicken, so what. I actually have come to LOVE veggies, all of them. I'm a geek for a gourmet Burger (I'm lying, I even love McD's cheeseburgers, again I'm easy). I can live on Sushi. My family is Creole, love seafood.
Day Job: Working for myself these days. 9 written books, 4 patents, consulting, coding, and generally talking smack to make a dollar.
Hobbies: Reading, Writing, Exercising, Inventing, Dreaming.
Other: I have a highly addictive personality that I have to constantly manage, and a bad case of ADD which I passed on to my child. Basically I find everything fascinating and shiny and have to work to stay focused.
I apologize if this was too long.
Echo wrote: "Welcome!I'm just starting to watch the Expanse on Netflix. I heard so much good about it."
It's truly Awesome, Echo. I think you'll love it.
I've been lurking for a bit and forgot to do this. Time to clean up my act a bit..Name: Will Macmillan Jones
Favourite authors - it's easier than books: Zelazny (criminally under read these days) Vance, Tolkien, Asimov, Tchaikovsky, Iain M Banks
favourite movies : Alien, LOTR, Blade Runner etc etc etc
Favourite food: curry, particularly a Bhuna or Rogan Josh. No meat, I've been a veggie for 50 years
Day Job: International Tax consultant (no, honest!) and part time scribbler
Hobbies : reading, fell walking, looking for dragons
Other: I'm also a semi professional oral storytelling in the celtic tradition, specialising in Welsh myths and legends.
