Starting/joining in with buddy reads
Quick query: did I not see that there was going to be a buddy read of The Case of the Gilded Fly? When is that supposed to start? I’m sure I got a notice, and they usually start a week later, but I have been unable to find a thread. Thanks.
Hi Abigail. Yes, mid-month. The thread is here, but not open yet:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
There are a lot of buddy reads at the moment, so some are not immediately visible, sorry!

Yes, definitely. We are coming to end of some series, starting others. Always open to suggestions of other series though, for buddy reads, as they are fun to juggle.
Murder on the Lusitania
a series of murder mysteries set aboard ships are being reprinted next year. Previously, they were published under the pen name of Conrad Allen.
Over on 20th Century, we have been reading some histories of Titanic and Lusitania and I wondered whether anyone was interested in adding this series to our buddy reads?
Ocean Liner Mystery Series
1. Murder on the Lusitania (2021)
2. Murder on the Mauretania (2021)
3. Murder on the Minnesota (2022)
4. Murder on the Caronia (2022)

Thank you for including the Bobby Owen’s and Maigret’s as there do seem to be four or five of us still interested in reading on.
Thank you for the list Susan. I am continuing with Bobby Owen and, so far, with Maigret. Will be skipping Freddy P-S however.
Thanks, Susan, will be reading on in Maigret for now, and definitely want to give Freddy P-S a try - I’m too far behind in Bobby, hope to catch up someday, I know the threads will be there when I do! Thank you, mods, for all you do to make this an interesting, well-run group!

Sorry, forgot to respond to this - shows as $5.99 on Kindle, I’d be willing to try the first book at least! Always on the lookout for a good new series.
I'd like to try Murder on the Lusitania - my library has the series under the original author name of Conrad Allen - I love a shipboard story!
Three of us is enough for a buddy read :) I will add them tomorrow - just came back from taking my daughter to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, so going to bed now!
Brilliant, have added it.

I'm joining in for the Heyers certainly; the Crispin of I get it in time and Freddie Pilkington Soames. I read and enjoyed the first and do want to carry on
I will be here for the Caudwell and the Heyer. Which helps me decide to give the Maigret a miss. I didn't much enjoy Piotr the Latvian.
Sorry about the typos, typing on my phone again which I'm hopeless at. Laptop gave out mid week and is away for repairs.
So annoying, Lady. Rosina, I read Piotr the Latvian a while ago and wasn't inspired to read on, so not just you.
Judy wrote: "I'll give the first ocean liner mystery a try too - intriguing theme."it sounds good to me, too. and I will certainly join in for the Heyers.
I will probably try the ocean liner series, but didn't much like the couple of Marsten's I've read. April seems a long way off!
I hadn't realised that the Edward Marston books were the Conrad Allen books he released some years ago. The Conrad struck a note, and it seems I have the series, so I too will give it a try in April.
There wasn't much interest in the last Elisabeth Peters book. I can add the next if anyone wants to read on, but I think I'll probably drop out of that series.
I've just noticed that Death in High Heels by Christianna Brand is being reissued in paperback in the UK on November 2, along with two of her other titles, Tour de Force and Heads You Lose. Looks as if they have the same covers as previously. Let's hope that means they will also reappear on Kindle here shortly.
Susan wrote: "There wasn't much interest in the last Elisabeth Peters book. I can add the next if anyone wants to read on, but I think I'll probably drop out of that series."Ok That's fine by me. Just checking
Ooh, Brand reissues are always good news, Judy.
Members are always welcome to suggest books or run their own buddy reads. The sheer numbers of books we currently have running means that the group is more interesting, but also means the mods can't read all of the titles - although at least one of us generally read most of them.

I´ll try the ocean liner series too, and perhaps read the second Maigret, as I can easily get it from the library, though I wasn´t a big fan of the first one. Also want to read the Cadfael no.9, as I got it at home, and the second Bellairs in December. The Golden Age of Murder also looks good! :)
Good to see so much interest in our forthcoming reads, Michaela! The Golden Age of Murder will be the perfect introduction to next year's challenge.
Murder on the Lusitania (Ocean Liner Mysteries #1) by Edward Marston is on NetGalley if anyone wishes to request it.

If I wanted to go back and join in with the Heyer buddy read is it starting with Footsteps in the Dark and going in publication order? I didn't like Heyer at first but she grew on me by the second book that I read from her. I might give her another try...
Marie wrote: "If I wanted to go back and join in with the Heyer buddy read is it starting with Footsteps in the Dark and going in publication order? For now, have picked up the Sittaford Mystery--a revisit for me.
I was able to find Death In High Heels and Murder on the Lusitania at my local used book store today, so I guess I will be joining in on those reads.
I only just realized that Christianna brand is also the author of the Nurse Matilda (Nanny McPhee) books.

With so few Christianna Brand's currently easily available, Death in High Heels will probably be our last group read. You are right, Lady, she did write the Nurse Matilda books.
We will also complete Nicholas Blake, with the last two stand alones and Margery Allingham, with her last novel, completed by her husband after her death.
Apart from Punshon and Maigret, current buddy series are:
Cadfael, Clara Benson's Freddy Pilkington-Soames, Edmund Crispin, Sarah Caudwell, Alan Bradley, Georgette Heyer and we are starting Edward Marston's Ocean Liner mysteries. If I have missed anyone out, please prompt me! Thanks.

FYI, on GR I found "The Crime of Inspector Maigret" also published as "The Hanged Man of Saint-Phelien" and "Maigret and the Hundred Gibbets".

Yes, seems so. As in the third book: Welcome to our Jan 22/Feb 22 buddy read of The Death of Monsieur Gallet
aka Maigret Stonewalled / The Late Monsieur Gallet

I am hoping to join in on the Crispin--hoping I can get a copy in time. Certainly joining for the Heyer and Clara Benson. I have the Ellis Peters and Bradley as well.
