Now that it's October, our Reading Challenge is to read something spooky or Halloween themed. Horror books, of course, are great. But if you don't read those try something with supernatural creatures, maybe urban fantasy, or paranormal romance OR a thriller. True Crime is always good for real life thrills.

Becky | 280 comments I have a few in mind for spooky: The Woman in Black by Susan Hill, and Bellman & Black by Diane Setterfield.

Those sound spooky. Didn't they turn The Woman in Black into a movie starring Daniel Radcliffe? And I haven't heard of Bellman & Black. I'll have to look that one up. Enjoy your books!

message 4: by Jennie (new)

Jennie | 43 comments I read Stephanie Black's PLAYED FOR A FOOL. It's real life spooky.

message 5: by Becky (new)

Becky | 280 comments Yes, may have to watch the movie too.

Donna | 72 comments This is my 2nd least favorite genre, (Romance is my least favorite.) I'm a little squeamish. But I do have 4 of Chelsea Cain's books. I have to space hers out because they are pretty violent. Her books remind me of Karin Slaughter's books. They both do evil so well.

I also have Jaws, Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, and one of Mira Grant's books. She does zombies. Which really, I hate zombies, but if you are wanting to stretch out of you comfort zone, read Feed. It is a little long, but it was so good and not gory. Also a recent Zombie book I read last month was Working Stiff. This one was kind of funny, but it was also a little gory, but not too bad.

I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

Happy Halloween!!!!

That sounds INCREDIBLY creepy. I don't think I could read it.

I don't really read a ton of horror or spooky books either. I have a REALLY good imagination, which can make it difficult to sleep after reading something creepy. That's why the bookI linked to is for my favorite 'spooky' picture book. I'm glad of your reviews of Mira Grant. I love Seanan McGuire (same person) but have been avoiding the Mira Grant books because I am NOT a fan of zombie's either. Good to know it's good and not gory!

Me too. Horror movies ONLY in daylight. When I do want spooky, I read Dean Koontz. King is just too scary, but Koontz is the right level of "off" without being full range. But I'll have to think on this one. Several of the titles listed above are on my audio-to-listen list.

It's not Zombies or monsters. It's just a really good suspense novel.

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments I've decided I'll listen to the audiobook of Jaws by Peter Benchley. And afterward I'll have to watch the movie again!

message 12: by Tiffinie (new)

Tiffinie Adams | 18 comments I can't read horror so instead I'll read two fantasy sci-fi ... The wind through the keyhole by Stephen King and Lies ripped open by Steve Mchugh. Both are the newest in series I love.

message 13: by Allen (new)

Allen (allengreenwell) | 19 comments I just finished reading Rooms by Lauren Oliver. It's not a horror novel, but it is a fun ghost story. It's written from the perspective of the ghost that haunts the house.

I recently watched the movie and read the book, both for the first time. I was surprised by how much more involved the book was compared to the movie.

the book was 100% better then the movie

Carolyn (justknitting) | 137 comments I just got The Haunting of Gillespie House, can't wait to start it!

As I'm listening to the book, I find I like it better than the movie, but I don't like the movie less. I'm about 1/2 way and just got past the "Oh, my. Didn't expect that." part. Which wasn't even vaguely eluded to in the movie.

message 19: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (dashforcover) | 1219 comments I have finished Jaws by Peter Benchley. It was an interesting book, different from the movie, but still a very good story. I like the excitement of the movie better.

message 20: by Becky (new)

Becky | 280 comments I finished both these books that I intended to read, and they were good picks for October. I need to watch the movie, now, of The Woman in Black.

Jennie | 43 comments I just finished "The Cenote" by Chelsea Dyreng. It has a supernatural twist to it, but is fascinating. I'll probably review it for Meridian Magazine within the next few weeks.

message 23: by Donna (new)

Donna | 72 comments Here are my reads this month that fit the October challenge.

Horror:
Jaws
Neverwhere (also listed as Urban Fantasy)
Sweetheart

Urban Fantasy:
Summer Knight
Grave Peril
(I'm liking this series by Jim Butcher)

Britt, Book Habitue (britt--bookhabitue) | 767 comments I tried to read Love Letters and Other Passages of Darkness but it just wasn't my thing. Couldn't even make it through the first story. :/

Allen is our prize drawing winner for October’s reading challenge. He read Rooms by Lauren Oliver.

message 26: by Jennie (new)

Jennie | 43 comments My new book which is coming out this week (By the River) would have worked for October and my January novella release Rescuing Bailey has airplanes in it and would work for November. I seem to be out of sync, but I hope you guys will read both of them anyway! LOL
