Closing in on the halfway mark. Found it interesting (as regards earlier posts concerning the cover art) when the author stated in the prologue that the book didn't sell well initially until the publisher came up with a new cover design, at which time sales began to soar.

Nice review, Perry. I enjoyed it, too, and will go on to read the next one. I liked Harry and Boris both. I also liked the idea that there was a difference between a necroscope and a necromancer. I don't know if that is original to this story or not, but I'd not heard that before. Like some others mentioned, I do wish we would have had more on the Vampire story, and hope that is picked up in the next book, considering it is titled Vampyri. :)
I struggled through the first chapter but enjoyed the chapters of Harry as a child. My epub copy is in the wrong order which is making it a bit more difficult to get into. The prologue is at the end of the book which I didn't realise until I'd read the first 3/4 chapters. :(

FYI: So I am reading this... Still. It's taking me forever, not because I am not enjoying it but I haven't been reading much for some reason. Anyway I have about 100 pages to go and was at my used book store and saw book 2. I read the back and it told me everything that happens at the end of the first one!!

There were definitely elements to this that I found fascinating, (view spoiler), but the pacing was way off for me. It definitely felt like a series book...and sometimes series are too slow for me.
