Wallace Greetings . My name is Wallace and I live on the West coast of Canada. I read mainly about English and Ancient Egypt. Although I am currently reading about the last Chinese Empress. It all started when I picked up a copy of Stacy Schiffs Cleopatra. I learnt so much that I just had to visit the place. Then King Henry and Anne Boleyn appeared on Wolf Hall so just had to read about them. Having no book shop in out small town one of technologies greatest advances, for me, is the ebook reader. I am pleased to have found you.

Betty (bellemercier) Hello Matthew, and welcome to The History Book Club! I'm so glad you found us. I think you will find a comfortable home here. We have a wide variety of folders which may be of interest to you.

Based upon your interests, here are some that you may want to look at:

Cultural History
Philosophy and Politics
Role of Religion in History

Here is a link to the HBC's Focus Areas, to help you find all of our topics quickly:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that interest you.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books that you mention should look:

The Lost History of Christianity The Thousand-Year Golden Age of the Church in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia—and How It Died by Philip Jenkins by Philip Jenkins Philip Jenkins

Charles | 1 comments Hello, everyone! My name is Charles, I'm from Newcastle upon Tyne in the North of England and am currently living in New York City.

Growing up next to Hadrian's Wall instilled upon me a fascination in history from a young age, being able to walk along the wall and read tablets from nearly 2,000 years ago is something that baffles a young mind!

My areas of interest are (but not limited to): WWI, WWII, the British Empire (especially in Asia), the Roman Empire, Ancient Greece and 19th Century Russia.

Areas I would like to explore: The American Civil War, Alexander the Great, the Ottoman Empire and the French Revolution.

I'm very interested in historical trends and themes that have developed over the centuries. Very open to recommendations and look forward to contributing to group discussions.

As long as I can remember I've always been interested in World War II, particularly the Pacific Theater, and the American Civil War. Jeremy (jehoshua1914) | 1 comments Hello, my name is Jeremy. Quickly, I was born in the western part of the U.S. though now I live in the Appalachia area of eastern Kentucky. The economy here is bad and good paying jobs are scarce; drug abuse and a poor work ethic are rampant. I am married with two kids and work two jobs to make ends meet. I am enrolled in a community college to expand my career options. Finally, history manifests the best and worst in human nature and, in my humble opinion, is far more interesting than most works of fiction. I have joined this club with the simple intent to broaden my horizons.

Ahmed and Priti- welcome - this is the welcome thread where you post a brief introduction for yourself here. Have you both done that. Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are from in the world and what you love about history and why you joined the group. We would love to hear more about you. That you can do on this thread.

But the thread for suggestions is the following one and where you should make such requests and not on this thread:

David | 1 comments Hello, I'm David.

I'm a 56 year old ex journalist from Liverpool, UK. I'm now working in the charity sector, a scout leader, a musician, a motorcyclist and an avid reader of history, particularly of the medieval period, and some historical fiction.

While I have a particular interest in the civil war which has become known as The Anarchy, and the vast majority of my reading and interest is centred here, I'll happily flit anywhere from 350bc to 1815ad in the pursuit of knowledge, understanding and insight.

I've recently been returning to my texts on the Holy Roman Empire and, particularly, the Thirty Years War. Not so much reading them again but cherry picking chapters here and there to remind myself as I'm planning on spending some time in each of the next few years in Bavaria.

Cecília Vieira | 1 comments Hello everyone, I'm Cecília.

I'm from Brazil and I studied History at university. I imagined, as a teenager, that I would spend the rest of my life studying some amazing topic, but I ended up realising that I love to learn History much more than working with it. The dream career was lost, life went on and somehow I stopped reading History books. That's why I joined this group: to read about History again! in some kind of classroom atmosphere.

I guess my main interest is political history (which I see as guide, a frontdoor.. and not, you know, as the only important stuff).
Spanish Civil War has always been appealing for me.
I'm still trying to find what I don't like, to be honest.

Cheers :)

message 2123: by Melly (new)

Melly (mellysw) Hey everyone, I am Melly:)

I live in Florida in the US, and as a kid I read the typical entertaining books most kids read. My dad decided my reading was not substantial enough and marched me down to the library, allowing me to pick what I want but also making me choose a few nonfiction books.

He knew I would read them, and I did. I quickly learned to adore history. My history teachers were boring, but the books I would read were absolutely fascinating. Some of the stories I read was even more entertaining than the fiction books I read - but these were TRUE!

It started my life-long love of history, and my fascination with learning about other cultures, about how other people lived their lives. I am not so much interested in dates, but I am interested in the stories that happened on those dates. I am fascinated by how interwoven history is, about how this one thing that happened on this one day afected what happened this other day years later. About how this one person's childhood affected the trajection of an entire nation and people.

Specific areas of history that interest me more than others:
World War 2
Ancient Rome
Ancient China
The Golden Age of Islam
The History of Spain

Mel Hello, My name is Mel and I joined because your group and your discussions looked interesting as did your reading list. I live in the United States. My interests jump around based on what I think looks interesting, what shows I am watching, and world events. I think a knowledge of history is very important. I didn't as much when I was in school (probably would have ended up a history major if I had) but I do now and have for the past several years.

This seems like a great group to further my understanding of history, share knowledge in a respectful environment, and discuss some interesting books. Take Care everyone!

Here is a link to the HBC's Focus Areas, to help you find all of our topics quickly:

There are many other folders where you can discuss topics that interest you.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. (There is a link on the top right of the comment box). It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

Nancy Hi - My name is Nancy. I am a public school music teacher by profession, (thus very little time!) but grew up in the household of a history teacher/administrator. I have several areas of targeted interest, but am by no means limited to those parts of history. I read a variety of genres and styles. I've navigated around the group, found some things to explore further, read all the guidelines, have no problem posting covers and author shots. Thanks for such a well structured and broad group.
