Tamlin ~ Character Discussion

I don't think he's got a shorter temper. I think he is just a control freak with manipulative problems.

That would be nice. It's like he's just a thought while she's off at the Night Court.

But I feel like Tamlin's story isn't over yet I really want to see how he's gonna try to rebuild the Spring Court and to regain the trust of everyone in it

I think he did redeem himself after saving Feyre and the others in the camp- that really made me think twice about everything. It's clear he still loves her. But when he saved Rhys...I don't think he was going to until Feyre practically begged him to. I found this on Pinterest which explains that part quite well, comparing it to AOCTAR:

I know he suffered Under the Mountain, but he never dealt with any of it properly and it turned him into a bigger control freak than he already was- I just don't think we saw in ACOTAR because we were looking at him through Feyre's eyes.
So maybe I don't want him to die anymore at least. I suppose I want him to find someone who can make him change...but I don't think I'm ever going to like him again.

You won't regret reading ACOMAF, honest. :D Rhys is very wonderful.
I know what you mean though. I was actually quite surprised at how much, how quickly, my feelings on Tamlin changed. But then, the planning Mass must have done to get us all on his side, to filter it all so carefully to get us to see him how Feyre did...is really brilliant.

Oh, you'll be fangirling about Rhys too when you read it! :) Hope you manage to get it soon and enjoy it.

Thank you Kelly :)

I found it and it's a great post. I completely agree with all of this and don't understand why we'd need any of it from Tamlin's POV. This may get a little long- I suppose I'll have a rant too. :)
But I've found it's not just Feyre, but also Lucien, which is why I'm so glad he got out of the Spring Court in ACOWAR. You might have heard many people saying that Lucien is what Feyre would be without the Night Court's support. I think they're right. So long as he stays with them too, I think he'll be alright. I hope he becomes his own person too.
Lucien is supposed to be his friend, yet Tamlin controls him just as much- is verbally abusive to him and threatens to kill him- or close enough. There are plenty of instances: In the ACOMAF scene after the Tithe, and in ACOWAR, after he and Feyre set the Bogge on the Hybern twins.
When Feyre plays them both in ACOWAR, the line goes, "I waited for the five minutes it took Tamlin to decide not to kill Lucien." Seriously??
He's just manipulative and I think his jealousy comes from some underlying issues because of his awful behaviour to everyone.
It doesn't even come down to his being High Lord, as he likes to remind everyone. Rhys doesn't act this way with his family and he's a High Lord.
I agree the writing of it all has been brilliant, because no one really read too much into it in ACOTAR- at least, I didn't. Tamlin was the 'good guy' and seeing it through Feyre's eyes, we believed it.
While I don't want Tamlin dead anymore (he did redeem himself somewhat in ACOWAR), I still hate him, but wish someone would come along and help him deal with his issues. If he's going to have any sort of future, he can't carry on as he has been.

That's a good point. I can't imagine growing up around Beron would have been easy either. And after what they did to him there, I was actually quite surprised when we found out in ACOWAR Lucien had decorated his bedroom in Autumn Court colours.
I hope he will, regardless of the mating bond with Elain- though part of me also wants to work out- but Lucien deserves happiness. Yes I really like his character. :) Maybe one day Tamlin will learn to be better towards him, as I think they have had *some* moments where they care about each other.

That wasn't where my brain automatically went and I'd almost forgotten that part. I suppose now we know why Lucien's mother was always close to him. Maybe also as a way of remembering his first love too.

I just don't really understand Tamlin's character shift in ACOMAF. He wasn't that controlling in ACOTAR (I could be wrong, I don't really remember ACOTAR as well, but from what I can remember he wasn't a control freak), and then all of a sudden he refuses to let Feyre do anything even though he knows she's more than capable of handling it. Feyre, for her part, just gives up. Yes, Tamlin should have noticed she was wasting away, but you can't blame all of that on Tamlin. And about sending Lucien after Feyre, I saw a post once I can't get out of my head where Tamlin didn't know Feyre could write. He knew she was illiterate and then she just runs away and sends him a note saying to not come after her.
I do, however, have a problem with Tamlin betraying them to Hybern. That was just cold and at the meeting with the High Lords I could not stand him. But he did get his redemption when he helped Feyre get out of Hybern's camp, when he forced Beron to bring his army to help fight, and when he helped revive Rhys.
I will always ship Feysand and there are definitely inexcusable things that Tamlin did, but I don't hate him (much). I kind of just pity him.

Yeah feyre mentions it in a court of wings and ruin. And I don't know why but even though it's a small thing compared to betraying them to hybern, it gets to me.

Okay rant done. I know Rhys said to not compare him to Tamlin but there are similarities between the two listed above, like they both lost a lot and they both watched the love of their lives be tortured, etc. I'm also not going to say that what Tamlin did in ACOMAF was excusable because he really shouldn't have done that, but I think there's a lot more to his character than it seems. And yeah actions speak louder than words and blah blah blah but I think he's more complicated than just Feyre's shitty, controlling ex boyfriend. I'm also not saying we should all go hug him and tell him it's going to be okay and love him, but I don't think people should hate him as much as they do because he's a lot more complicated. Which I've said like a hundred times, but maybe other people will finally realize that too instead of just hating on him.

This is good, you make some great points about what a complicated character he is

Tamlin was just horrible. He wasn't evil he was just a horrible character for someone who has a decent enough background. In ACOTAR we, or at least, I saw all the red flags about his personality. Him being a controlling, manipulating freak with anger management issues. He manipulated Feyre to love him to lift the curse which led him to fall for her too seeing how Feyre darling is unique for a puny mortal. This kindness made Feyre love him too. BUT it does not excuse the fact that he SAT on his ass while this innocent human girl you dragged in your world suffered. He did not sit on his sorry butt for Feyre but because he was a spineless coward. Lucien's neck was at risk too but he did everything to visit her in her cell and help her heal. Yet all he did was to break free from Amarantha in her last day of trial because he knew all hope was lost. He just wanted to play with his little plaything one last time. And when ACOMAF came, his attitude was not because he was traumatized in Under the Mountain, but because we see who he truly is. The control freak High Lord who knew nothing about love and making his people prosper. So I don't get the people who did not continue ACOMAF because 'precious' Tamlin turned out to be the bad guy. I believe they are ignorant because they missed his true nature pre-ACOMAF.

It kinda breaks my heart what happened to his character. After all, he's like my first love in the ACOTAR series and one of the reasons why i started liking it besides my emphathy towards Feyre(on the first book, but gotten tired and disappointed on her character on the following stories), and the magic this story brought. I hope SJM decides to redeem his character and show his POV.

I couldn't agree more. I don't agree with how Tamlin treated Feyre or Lucien. BUT I felt like Sarah made him suicidal and depressed and we were supposed to just what? Shrug? He also helped Feyre and Azriel, fought against Hybern, MADE Berin fight, and helped save Rhys. Does that make up for his emotional and verbal abuse toward feyre and Lucien? Of course not but I still think he tried to be a good male and regretted his actions towards them. I don't like tamlin but I don't hate him and he deserves to be treated a little better.
