Elizabeth (Alaska) I see that he has another on the current list, and a couple from the 2006 list that have been removed. Removals don't bother me, I've got them added!

Removals don't bother me because there are some books I doubt I will ever read for different reason so I take them off amd replace them with ones that have been removed.

Removals don't bother me either. I'll never finish the list - neither the time nor the inclination - but it contains many titles I believe I'll find interesting.

message 4805: by Marialyce (new)

Marialyce Started a reread of Rebecca last night. That first chapter, oh what a beginning....

I doubt I will ever finish either buyt It has helped my reading choices grow so I am getting more variety in my reading which is nice because before I discovered this list had hard time finding books outside of a few genres or authors.

I've heard good things about this book, but it's not on the 1001 list.

It is on the first list I can't be sure about the others since I mainly work off of first list.

Oops, I completely misread that title. I should know better than to post before coffee. Sorry for the confusion.

Dana Arbelaez (danas_reads) | 25 comments Just started 1984 by George Orwell, and I'm already more than a third of the way done! It took me forever to finally pick up this book, and I've tried in the past to read it but perhaps just wasn't ready for the theme. Now...I'm glad I've finally gotten into it!

I've avoid this novel for a long time because of its sad subject. Now that I have read 35 pages, I think I am going to love it.

What did you think of Cannery Row? It's in my bookbag from the library this week, but I haven't started it yet. Was it as good as Mice & Men?

Jenny (jeoblivion) Reading "North and South" by Elizabeth Gaskell at the moment and eventhough it is sometimes hard to follow the language (a lot of it is in dialect) I am very much enjoying the book so far.

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Blood Meridian by Carmac McCarthy

Library copy became available so I had to add it to the two I already have going from the list, Tristram Shandy and Possessing the Secret of Joy.

Chilling, as I expected after the other titles I've read by McCarthy.

Jenny (jeoblivion) Rachel (Sfogs)wrote: "I have a copy of her book Cranford, I'll hopfully read it over the uni holidays."

Did you read anything else by her? Apart from Dickens and the Brontë sisters the whole Victorian era has somehow passed me by until now, but Gaskell actually makes me want to fill in these blanks. Also: what is a bookcrosser (saw it on your profile ;-)? Unfortunately my dictionary didn't know either. Reading several books at the same time? Reading "diagonally"?

message 4834: by [deleted user] (new)

Don Quixote....I am kinda nervous to read this...I really hope that I will enjoy it because if I find it boring it's 600 plus pages....that's going to make for a very long read :(

No I haven't but I've seen the movie version of Cranford.
I'm part of 'Bookcrossing.com' though I don't do wild book releases, I send my books to other bookcrossers all around the world. The downside is my reading pile has doubled...a few times over!! XD

When you're done with North & South, I think you should consider Vanity Fair with its wickedly fun heroine, Becky Sharp, or The Woman in White, an entertaining gothic-ish mystery.

Thank you Liz, I think I might go with "The Woman in White" since I keep coming across Wilkie Collins somehow. I am also very curious about Eliot and Trollope

Becky Aitchison (becky6229) | 20 comments Starting Call of the Wild. It's a book that I still can't believe I haven't read, so I'm sitting down and actually reading it. Really looking forward to it!

message 4844: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James (sthwnd) | 352 comments Last night I started:

The Age of Innocence

I also have these on deck to read that are in my library bag:

The Woman in White-I have heard so many good things about it I had to check it out this time :)

Cannery Row-I liked Mice & Men, & this was shorter than Grapes of Wrath, LOL.

Invisible Man-just because, it's a random choice, I know nothing about the book, so it's going to be a surprise entity.

When I read Tess last spring, I felt the same way!!! I don't know what it is about Hardy, but I actually threw my copy of Jude the Obscure across the room when I finished it, and I never abuse books! Fortunately, it was a free book that I picked up; I have since donated it to my sister-in-law's used bookstore. Ick.

message 4849: by Bea (new)

Bea | 110 comments I'm about to enter a massive re-read of Bleak House and Our Mutual Friend (both List books) with another group.

The Random Number Generator came up with For Whom the Bell Tolls as my next new List read. (Disclosure: I actually ask the RNG to pick three numbers and then I choose the one I feel most like reading at the time.)

message 4850: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yea, Bea! I'm going to start Our Mutual Friend tonight. These are not re-reads for me, and I'm looking forward to them. It's been a number of years since I've picked up anything Dickens and I used to say he was my favorite author.
