I've just started The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood. Not feeling it so far - it is a book that seems a bit dated to be honest but i'm only 60 pages in so i'm not giving in just yet.
I am starting on The Corrections. I avoided this when it was published for being overhyped, overexposed and overrated. After reading (and loving) Everything Is Illuminated, which I had avoided for the same reason, I decided to give Franzen a try. I am liking it quite a bit so far. I am trying to be a little bit less of a book snob-- Just because something is hyped/popular doesn't mean that it can't be great.
Last night I started The Bridge on the Drina. Chapter 1 was a little dry, which I feared, but Chapters 2 and 3 are showing signs of life.
JenniferStick with the bridge on the Drina, it does get better.
Started Belle du Seigneur by Albert Cohen, just getting into it but finding the size of the book is daunting.
Well, I've taken the plunge and have started reading "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy. I've always wanted to read it but the sheer length of the book kept me at arms length. I'm at about page 100 and so far I'm into it.

I've looked at quite a few reviews on this site for The Shipping News and they are all generally either in the loved it or hated it vein. I'm interested to find out which side of the fence i'll come down on!
I just started The Fest of the Goat by Mario Vargas Llosa for my book club. We wanted to try something by the Nobel Prize Winner.
I don't know how i will get through it though, I have read way too many novels dealing with Trujillo. i took a class in college where we read five in six weeks so I don't have much patience for them

Preparing to dive into an English sci-fi threesome with The War of the Worlds, The Day of the Triffids and On the Beach (not a list book, I think)
I've been reading Far from the Madding Crowd over the past few days. Now that I'm done with Infinite Jest I can spend more quality time with Hardy. I'm looking forward to that.
I've been reading the unabridged The Count of Monte Cristo and it's really good. So much happening in it.

Started The Idiot by Dostoevsky. I noticed it is an upcoming book club read, but it has been on my shelf for a while and I would like to get it started. I also started Memoirs of Martinus Scriblerus by Arbuthnot. It is a very quick read (100 pages), and reminiscent of Tristram Shandy or Jonathan Swift. I had never heard of it before I saw it on the list. I am really surprised, as it is very funny--and would have made a good addition to an English lit syllabus.
After finishing a long one, I chose three relatively shorter works to start:The History of Rasselas -Samuel Johnson
Candide -Volatire
and
Rameau's Nephew -Denis Diderot
Lisa wrote: "I just started Dom Casmurro by Machado de Assis"I really enjoyed that one. i hope you have fun with it.
I've just started Siddhartha. I'm not quite sure if I know what I've gotten into yet as I know nothing about the book; just that it's one of the all time 'greats'.
Deanne wrote: "Just started Nights at the circus by Angela Carter, find her writing a little bizarre."one of my favorite writers! although i have never read Nights.
i think The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman is incredible. but yep, very bizarre.

I did like it, I couldn't decide whether to feel sorry for him, or smack him upside his head for being so jealous for no reason.
I am about 100 pages into The Children's Book.I'm also putting The Postman Always Rings Twice on my iPod.
I'm hoping to start reading another John Saul book.In the Dark of the Night- J.S. I'm currently reading Black Creek Crossing by J.S. and I really do like it. His books fall into the horror- mystery fiction.
I'm reading A Clockwork Orange at the moment. Really awesome book, I got into it within minutes. I can't put it down. I feel so guilty for warming to Alex so much, though. :/
Just about to start The Summer book by Tove Jansson. Heard lots of positive things about it but not sure what to expect from the person who gave the world the moomin trolls!
