Truman Capote is one of my favorites - I started "In Cold Blood" one Friday night, and next thing I new the book was over... and so was my weekend. Perhaps reading it while I was alone late at night was not a good choice, though :)

Everyman, thanks for posting this. It looks like a really interesting list! Not many cross-overs between the Newsweek list and the 1001 list but they have two different goals so that's fair enough. Only problem then is - more books too read ... sighs ...

message 1406: by Christina Stind (new)

Christina Stind | 180 comments Currently working my way through War and Peace. It's a very dense book, it takes some time to get the various character straight - or just straighter - and I already know that I will have to read it again at some point ... but I like it. Not as much as Anna Karenina yet but we'll see.

I haven't read Bellows in ages, and it is about time!

message 1428: by Laura (new)

Laura | 56 comments I recently started The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. I have been avoiding the movie until I had a chance to read the book, yet I still find myself seeing Kate Winslett's face as I read about the character Hanna. This is an incredibly fast read and I am sure I will be done with it in no time.

I haven't read City of God yet but I believe it was a previous group read. Take a look in the book clubs thread to see what everyone had to say about it.

message 1443: by Susanna (last edited Jul 21, 2009 05:44AM) (new)

Susanna (jb_slasher) Missed the Group Read for Martin Amis's Dead Babies since I had some library books to get out of the way so starting that now.

Edit. I also noticed that it's not on the 2008 list so can't count it since I intend to keep track of the 2008 list since I just got here this year.

fantastic read... I loved it. It changed the genre completely and is so compelling it reads like fiction. Brilliant.

I read 2666, but I skipped a lot in the Part About the Murders. Who can read descriptions of the murders of hundreds of women we know nothing about other than that they were raped and murdered? The rest of the book was OK, certainly better than The Savage Detectives, which I found almost unreadable. Love Doctorro, Loved The Road.
