Vicky | 43 comments I've never heard of dailyreader.net, but I'm going to give it a try.

message 602: by Vicky (new)

Vicky | 43 comments Kristi -- The Shipping News is one of my very favorite reads. The characters are extremely quirky, and the background (landscape, weather, side characters, etc.) are also so quirky that it makes you wonder how these people can go on living. When it's all over, you have been on a wild and wonderful literary adventure.

On the other hand, my sister, whose tastes in literature are similar to my own, just couldn't get into it. Go figure!

Liz (busy91) | 5 comments Just started Frankenstein, this one will take me a while because the type is teenytiny!! My EYES!

message 605: by Karen (new)

Karen | 63 comments April, I will check out DailyLit too. I wonder how many books I get try to juggle at once, LOL?

message 606: by Karen (new)

Karen | 63 comments Kristi, when my book group read The Shipping News years ago, we all agreed that once you hit page 90, it somehow all came together and became a wonderful book. I think it takes awhile to get into the style of the writing. Also, I think I learned more new vocabulary reading that book than any other in recent history--I had to keep a dictionary nearby for the whole read. But it was well worth it, IMO>

message 607: by Vic (new)

Vic | 2 comments just started on beauty by Zadie smith. i had been a bit disappointed by The autograph man but this is great and hilarious.

message 608: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (courtneyclift) Liz, I loved SULA so much! I hope you're enjoying.

I just started Philip Roth's latest INDIGNATION which is so far reading like his last 2. I just got David Liss' new THE WHISKEY REBELS in the mail yesterday and I just know I'm going to race through the Roth to get to it (which doesn't bode well for enjoying Roth...LOL).

Peace,
Courtney

message 609: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments Karen, I think it was about the time that the aunt showed up in the story that I really began to enjoy 'The Shipping News.' I finished it last night, but I didn't expect a happy ending! I guess I didn't look up any words in the dictionary, I assumed most of those were Newfoundland or fishing or boating terms that I just wouldn't be able to find.

message 610: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments I can't decide which to start next. I should really finish Sense and Sensibility, I've been picking that up every once in a while. The problem is, it is in a big book with six other Austen novels, so I can't carry it around with me at all times. Anyway, I will either try The Picture of Dorian Gray or a non-1001-books book, The Great Railway Bazaar.

message 611: by Eva (new)

Eva | 60 comments I've just started on Half of a Yellow Sun.

message 612: by Chloe (last edited Oct 03, 2008 04:48PM) (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 129 comments I started A Clockwork Orange earlier today. I'm really enjoying it so far, the nadsat isn't bothering me at all.

message 613: by Stacie (new)

Stacie | 140 comments Kristi,
I would suggest reading Dorian. It isn't that long, goes pretty fast and is a very good book IMO. You could quickly knock out a 1001 book.

message 614: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I agree with Stacie! I finished Dorian Gray a couple of days ago and it was FABULOUS!!!

I'm a little over halfway through A Clockwork Orange right now. I hope to finish it today.

I've also started reading my collection of Poe stories and poems...most of which I've read before. I may have read all of them, but a few I don't remember, so I thought I could use a refresher. Seemed like a good October pick. Poe is great!

message 615: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments "The House of Seven Gables" - Nathaniel Hawthorne

I'm half way through and really enjoying it. I thought I had read this one years ago, but picked it up and didn't remember a thing about it! I think I would have remember the story if I'd read it before.
It's just strange enough to be memorable!

message 616: by anita (new)

anita | 1 comments hi, i've just start reading les miserables. a good friend of mine gave it to me. can someone gave a comment for this book?

message 619: by Ruthi (new)

Ruthi (herwitchiness) | 1 comments Well, I just put Never Let Me Go on reserve for me to pick up tomorrow. I'm just getting started on the list.

message 620: by H.J. (new)

H.J. Swinford (hayleejalyn) anita--

I just read Les Miserables last month and I can testify to its greatness. Absolutely one of the very best works of literature I have ever read. Have a wonderful journey, for that is what it is.

message 621: by Erin (new)

Erin I am also a huge fan of Les Mis....my favorite all time book. don't let the size scare you, it's worth it!

message 622: by Laura (new)

Laura (laurita) | 42 comments How terribly exciting, I just joined this group today and the four books I'm currently reading are all on the list:

The Three Musketeers - Dumas
Dracula - Stoker
Wuthering Heights - Bronte
Journey to the Center of the Earth - Verne

Also, one on hiatus:

Street of Crocodiles- Shultz

I am one lucky son of a gun.

The Three Musketeers

message 627: by Amy (new)

Amy (bibliocrates) | 29 comments I started The Red Queen by Margaret Drabble. There are no Chapter breaks, just a long continuous flow, which makes it a difficult book to go back to after I've set it down...

message 628: by Anna (new)

Anna (lilfox) | 290 comments Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism by Gershom Scholem

message 629: by [deleted user] (new)

Working on Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. First time reading an entire Joyce novel, but its going quite well so far.

message 634: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 129 comments I finished A Clockwork Orange recently and I've been digging into Love in the Time of Cholera lately. I am in absolute love with Garcia Marquez's writing style.

message 637: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments Return of the Native - Thomas Hardy

This is another I thought I had already read but find I can't remember much about it, so I started again. The first couple of chapters are hard to get through, but then the story kicks in and captures your attention. I think I will like it better than "Jude the Obscure".

message 638: by Laura (new)

Laura (laurita) | 42 comments I have an overwhelming fear of Hardy after reading Jude the Obscure when I was too young (14). Looking at that big, mean list and seeing that there's a lot of him on there, I'd better get over it. Let me know what you think of Return of the Native, Judith.

I just started, and am nearly finished with Edith Wharton's House of Mirth and The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare by G.K. Chesterton. John Berger's G. is next up.

message 639: by Eliza (new)

Eliza (elizac) | 72 comments I just started Anna Karenina

message 640: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 129 comments Emilee, I really enjoyed A Clockwork Orange. The film had been a favorite of mine for a long time but I'd always been shy of the book because I didn't want it to muck up my feelings for the film. Fortunately it didn't. It's a really quick read too, I flew through it.

message 641: by Linda (last edited Oct 15, 2008 12:35PM) (new)

Linda (mslinda8393) Hi everyone. This is my first post. I just started reading The Book Thief. I saw in the chats for this group that several people had read it and liked it, so I thought I would give it a go. I noticed my comment number is 666. I guess I'd better watch out for ladders and black cats!

message 642: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorihahn54) | 27 comments Just got "Franny and Zoey" by J.D. Salinger

message 643: by Laura (new)

Laura (laurita) | 42 comments Oooh, Lori. Good one. I just got into an intense discussion about cerebral books versus emotional and plot driven narratives last night that centered on this book. You'll have to let me know what you think when you finish it.

message 644: by Vicky (new)

Vicky | 43 comments Kristi -- I hope you enjoy The Correctioins as much as I did.

message 645: by Amy (last edited Oct 15, 2008 10:09PM) (new)

Amy (bibliocrates) | 29 comments Oh, I loved this book Judith! His descriptive writing is like poetry to me, not to everyone's liking, I know.

message 646: by Major (new)

Major (majorbajirao) | 1 comments How do you find it so far? Many people told me that they read for few pages & then they give it up. I read the book many decades ago & liked it a lot
Major B V Naik

message 647: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments Thanks, Vicky. I am liking The Corrections so far.

message 648: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (glinda) | 30 comments I so wanted to like The Corrections but I hated it (absolutely no offense intended). I have to try it again because I never finished it. Maybe when I'm done with the other four or five books I'm reading now...

message 649: by [deleted user] (new)

I started Lady Chatterley's lover a few days ago, so far it's only getting better.

message 650: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine | 2 comments I started Treasure Island. I am trying to mix up classics with the newer books.
