Chloe (countessofblooms) | 129 comments Kristen, I've also just started on War & Peace. I'm really loving it so far, though I've barely even begun. I don't know why Tolstoy intimidated me for so long.

Robin (robinsullivan) | 4 comments Vicky,
Do you mean Kite Runner? Just asking to know if there is another book running around that I haven't heard of.

Wife of GR author: Michael J. Sullivan | The Crown Conspiracy (10/08) | Avempartha (04/09)

message 811: by Tara (new)

Tara (emerging) Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.

message 812: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 1 comments Gwenindil wrote: "I've just strart "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen"

I've just started Pride and Prejudice as well. I am really enjoying it. The only problem is that I have the annotated version, and I have to look up the meaning of the words for some of the phrases. That can slow you down when you're trying to get into the story.

message 813: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) War and Peace

message 814: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Also, The Godfather.

message 815: by Kristi (new)

message 816: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnareadstheworld) | 0 comments Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure.

message 817: by Gaston (new)

Gaston | 26 comments Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. Only about 20 or so pages into it.

message 818: by Sarah Jane (new)

Sarah Jane American Pastoral by Philip Roth.

The first part was a bit difficult to wade through (very wordy and dense), but it picks up in Part II and it less of a ramble. I'm liking it so far.

message 819: by Laura (new)

Laura (laurita) | 42 comments Good Luck to you Gaston. That book is quite the beautiful beast.

message 820: by Gaston (new)

Gaston | 26 comments Thanks! I just finished The Crying of Lot 49 for the second time and thought I would give this one a go. However, I am beginning to question myself for doing this...

message 821: by Laura (new)

Laura (laurita) | 42 comments Contrary to common opinion, I found it a lot more approachable thanV. It still took me about four months to get through it. I always enjoyed it while I was actually reading it, but it's just so hard to pick back up once you put it down. Damned daunting book. I think you've done well to pick it up in the dreary winter months.

message 822: by Gaston (new)

Gaston | 26 comments Well we shall see just how well I've done! It may take me just as long as it did you or longer to finally finish.

message 823: by [deleted user] (new)

Moby Dick

message 824: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments I finally began If Not Now, When?, I can't put it down!

message 827: by Nikki (new)

message 828: by H.J. (new)

H.J. Swinford (hayleejalyn) Just started Silas Marner by George Eliot.

message 829: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 129 comments I'm still about halfway through War & Peace. I like it, I just wish Tolstoy had had a better editor. 1200 pages on land rights for serfs and court intrigues is a bit much.

I've decided to balance the Tolstoy with a bit of Gogol, so started Dead Souls today. It's a great read, I like Gogol's tongue-in-cheek look at the landowners of 19th century Russia, especially now that I have the historical background from War & Peace.

message 830: by H.J. (new)

H.J. Swinford (hayleejalyn) I just began reading Little Women and am already quite far into it for only 1 day of reading; I can't hardly put it down. I absolutely love the relationships of the March family and it makes me miss my sisters so much I could cry.

I have seen the movie countless times, but nothing compares to the emotions and passion in Alcott's text. I am loving it.

Dead Souls is much better. It will make you laugh out loud in parts. You will remember the characters there long after finishing the book. You will probably recognize some in your own life.

message 832: by Deanna (new)

Deanna McFadden (ragdoll) | 9 comments I'm in the midst of "Middlemarch" -- fingers crossed I finish it this week.

message 834: by Elizabeth (last edited Dec 21, 2008 04:08PM) (new)

Elizabeth I just started reading To Kill a Mockingbird again. It's been over ten years since I last read it and I'd nearly forgotten how great it is. Can't put it down!

message 835: by Fr. Andrew (new)

Fr. Andrew (nitesead) I haven't had a chance to look through the list yet! But I'm intrigued. I'm also taking lit classes which may slow me down for the time being. But I just started The Picture of Dorian Gray, which I'm hoping is on the list. Ha.

message 836: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I didn't just start it, but it is the book I'm still currently reading, Anna Karenina. At this point I have about 200 pages to go and will be so happy to finally finish it. I've been trying to get this book off of my tbr list for years.
I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit and the chapters are a perfect length to get me to read at least one every night before bed.

message 837: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) | 18 comments I'm currently reading my first Irving, the world according to Garp. I have just started but I am enjoying it a lot.

It's on the list--and a really good read. And not too heavy either. I just started reading Slaughterhouse Five. Somehow, they let me out of high school without reading it. Better late than never!

message 840: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 32 comments Recently started The Poisonwood Bible, which I get the feeling I am going to like and really want to get into, but the hectic holidays have kept me from burying myself in it. Should pick up as things slow down.

message 841: by Christina Stind (new)

Christina Stind | 180 comments Started One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich last night - almost done with it. A very interesting book about the Siberian camps.

message 842: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I'm juggling Middlesex (maybe almost halfway through), Villette (just barely started), and Infinite Jest: A Novel (read nineteen pages and had to stop) right now.

message 843: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 263 comments I'm halfway into A Room With a View, I really like it. I mentioned already that I started the Golden Notebook, but I'm not very interested in it.

for-much-deliberation ... (formuchdeliberationreads) Finnegans Wake.
I started this book before, got to page 9 or 10, stopped, got through a few other reads, now i'm back at it.
Has anyone read this and gotten through it?
What are your thoughts?

message 846: by Judith (new)

Judith (jloucks) | 1202 comments "War and Peace" by Tolstoy. Started on New Year's Day, 2009.

message 847: by Laura (new)

Laura (laurita) | 42 comments Thinker, get a companion book or guide. The language isn't really meant to be intelligible to those not native to Dublin. I've read it, but in order to get any sense out of it, I was constantly referring to the companion. I can't remember which one I used, otherwise I'd recommend it. Good luck!

for-much-deliberation ... (formuchdeliberationreads) Thanks for the advice Laura!
