I just started reading Persuasion by Janes Austen. It's my 4th Austen (not including the unfinished novels and the short stories). I haven't seen the movie before as I did with Sense and Sensibility so I'm really curious about it.

I loved Fingersmith and haven't yet read her other book on the list, Tipping the Velvet. I think Waters is a great storyteller.

1/3 of the way through The War of the End of the World, and think it's going to be one of my favourites of the year. Also picked up Cain by Saramago from the library, not very long book, opened the first page just to have a look, and now up to page 60.

I'm so glad you are enjoying it. I seldom write reviews so naturally worry somewhat that people will think I've led them astray. Cain is at the top of my reading stack as well. Here's to reading great books!

I read it and I enjoyed it at first but then the twists and turns got to be too absurd, kind of like in Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep that I didn't enjoy the book in the end.

I'm 2/3 way through Invisible Man and just started The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

Those that loved The War of the End of the World, what did you love about it? I read it earlier this year, and a lot of it was a struggle for me.

Lots of good books in the posts!
-The Collector - The most fun I've had reading about kidnapping etc!
- Because of these lists Auster & Ballard have joined a growing group of favorite authors
- Speaking of counting Tolkien's trilogy as one book, I have just started reading Anthony Powell's "A Dance to the Music of Time.". This undertaking has 12 so-called volumes to purchase or find, or comes in 4 "Movements" which hold 3 volumes per. Each movement is about equivalent to War & Peace. Who has knocked this bugger off?

Later there is "Your Face Tomorrow" by Javier Marias' with 3 large volumes. If enjoyed like "Lord of the Rings" I can expect to be happily occupied for a bit.

Sounds like I'm not the only one who has more than one book going at once. Do most of you do that?

Reading The Enchanted Wanderer by Leskov, lots of fun.

Jen, I read the 12 volumes in the 4 movement series. So much easier. Read them last summer one after another. The cast is so big that to do otherwise is difficult. I absolutely loved them and wondered why it had taken me so long to read them. FYI, there's a companion book by Hilary Spurling that helps you keep track of characters, plot and timescale/historical events, in case you need it. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

I've read the first 100 pages of Catch-22 and I'm loving every second I spend reading it.

I started Oliver Twist (my first longer Dickens - have only read A Christmas Carol thus far), but got distracted by Rashomon by Akutagawa. That story is less than 10 pages on its own, but the library book I have includes 16 of his other stories, which I'm finding absolutely captivating.

I will look after the companion book for "A Dance...," but you are correct! I'm into the 3rd volume and finding it a fun read! Kind of like a good season of a favorite TV show; each new novel picks up where the last left you, with new twists and plot-lines.

Also started "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.". It suddenly became available after a long hold at the library. What a riot!!
