Really? I didn't care for this. For one thing, there was nothing scary about it.

It gets better. I gave up on it the first time through and struggled the second time but really ended up enjoying it.

I rather liked it, which surprised me. At first I tried to identify with Werther's emotions and could not, of course, so I read the remainder of the novel as a character study and enjoyed it more that way. Goethe does a great job of recounting a young man's senseless spiral into darkness.

I wrote my post before I got to a part that started to drag. I did finish the book but didn't like it as much as I thought ar the beginning.

I remember reading this one! It was large, but I remember liking it when I was finished with it. I've always been interested in that era though and ten to like books set in that time. Good luck and hope you enjoy it.

When you start into it, it seems like you'll never finish then when you do eventually get to the end, you get withdrawal symptoms. It's just that brilliant!

On another note I just joined this group. I have been working on this list for quite some time. I think it is a great way to read the classics, and know whats worth reading in my generation.

This was also the first Auster I read, and I was totally blown away by it. For me, it's one of those books that totally deserves the praise that's heaped at it. Enjoy!

for some reason I think of "No Spill Blood" by Oingo Boingo and Are We Not Men by Devo, when I think of Island of Dr. Moreau.
