IJ is one of my all-time favorite novels. I have read it twice and it has so much to offer everytime I read it.

I had that issue too right at first, but stuck with it. It does get better, & it's a great read. One of my favorite Dickens works.

Lisa James (sthwnd) | 352 comments I started The Tin Drum, by Gunter Grass late last night. That's going well. Can't go wrong with a book that's designed to be a satire & starts out with a guy in an insane asylum, LOL. I also just got done working my through the foreward to Madame Bovary, & now I can get into the real book.

I've been on a comedy / satire kick myself. I've recently read The Diary of a Nobody by Grossman, A Modest Proposal by Swift, and The Nose by Gogol. So, Candide seemed like the logical next up for me. Did you end up enjoying it to the end?

You are an inspiration for me. For some reason, the way you worded your post made me want to go back and continue IJ (I loved what I read but was overwhelmed by the sheer size of it all).

I also just bought Independent People which I've wanted to read for years. I look forward to reading what you think of it.
