Would changing that R to a C make a difference?

message 55: by Marcia (new)

Marcia Morgan No...changing it to a c is basically the whole premise of the book

Tom | 282 comments Actually I finished all three - North getting five stars and Crossing to Safety and Dragonfly in Amber getting four stars.

For my brick and mortar book club I've started The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks. Kind of meh so far but I'm only 8 pages in, which is far too soon to make a judgement. But I have to admit a bias against the author (as a writer of sappy romances) which is totally unearned since I've yet to read his work.

lol I've read a few of his books. I LOVED The Notebook, A Bend In The Road, The Wedding and Dear John (though I haven't finished it). I have The Rescue, The Last Song, and Nights in Rodanthe which I need to read.

Tom | 282 comments Well I'm now 93 pages into the book and I'm still meh, but mainly about the two main characters. The last chapter opened up the story to other characters at least, which helped a lot. I can't help but think of Netflix's Marco Polo - the weakest scenes are the ones the title characters are in. It also makes me appreciate just how good Gabaldon's writing of Claire and Jamie is.

Thread duty: Started Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy which I'm liking so far. Incidentally, the Kindle book is free, and owning it allows you to purchase the related audiobook for $1.99. The narrator is Davina Porter of Outlander fame and she's very good here as well.

Tom | 282 comments Oops - forgot to mention that I've started Pride and Prejudice as well to be ready for the Zombified edition later this month.

message 63: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments Finished both P&P (3 Stars) and PPZ (2 Stars). Started Notes from the Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

Ashley | 6 comments Hi friends! I recently finished Much Ado About Nothing and am currently working through In the Circus of You: An Illustrated Novel-in-Poems by Nicelle Davis and Cheryl Gross which, so far, is kind of amazing.

message 70: by Scott (new)

Scott von Berg (scottobear) Just began The Wake - pretty interesting so far, the constructed language was less of an impediment than I'd thought.

Interesting choices. I've only just started #3 in the Outlander series. Are you reading or listening (audiobook) or both?

How are you liking Song of Achilles?

I'm reading them! I've never actually listened to an audiobook before. I should probably give it a try at some point!

I'm really loving Song of Achilles. I love Greek mythology and historical fiction set within Greek myths and epics is one of my favorite genres.

You can sample the narration at audible.com. Davina Porter (the narrator for most things Outlander) is very good.

I just finished Voyager and will be starting Drums of Autumn soon..."

I hope you like Drums of Autumn! I've seen a lot of reviewers say they became bored with the books as they got further into the series. I'm still really enjoying them!

message 82: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments There seems to be a current of not caring about the historical part of the story - they just want more Claire and Jamie.

Tom | 282 comments Finally cleared out my reading backlog - I don't like to take too long to finish a book, so I am very happy that I've completed these. Both were quite good and the time I took to finish them is in no way representative of their quality.

Voyager by Diana Gabaldon 4 Stars

The Drunken Botanist: The Plants That Create the World's Great Drinks by Amy Stewart 5 Stars

message 85: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments Finished Macbeth 4 Stars

Tom | 282 comments If you want a good, readable non-fiction book, I'd suggest Isaac's Storm: A Man, a Time, and the Deadliest Hurricane in History by Erik Larson. It tells of the great hurricane of 1900 that leveled the city and killed thousands.

Tom | 282 comments Starting the new year with a new Irish novel and an old French novel:

The Glorious Heresies: A Novel by Lisa McInerney
Swann's Way by Marcel Proust

I am currently reading Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel. I have about an hour left to go in the audiobook. It's fantastic and performed by a full cast of incredible actors. SO GOOD!

Donna | 9 comments Better question is what book am I not reading lol I have so many books Iv started and read a few chapters then stopped 😂 honestly nothing at the moment to busy studying and working

Tom | 282 comments I've just finished Graeme Simsion's Don Tillman trilogy and very much enjoyed it. The main character may/may not be on the autism spectrum and the books explore how he engages with the world and vice versa. Sounds heavy, but the treatment (to my mind) is nuanced, with a light touch. Recommended. (I also remember hearing about a movie being made of the first book.)

Tom | 282 comments Finished a re-read of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce. Still 5 stars - it's no wonder why it made the Man Booker list when it came out. Started the companion volume The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy and am enjoying that as well.
