What is your suggestion for our 28th Group Read (April 2014)

Please suggest a graphic novel (only one suggestion per member. If you suggest more than one, then your first GN mention will be chosen for this list) for our 28th Book Club discussion (for the month of April). You can post it in this thread up for a few weeks.

After that a poll will be set up for the members to vote and decide what we will discuss next for April 2014.

Brenda Clough (brendaclough) | 163 comments Oh wow, Superman/Batman would be a thrill.

Brenda have you read this one? Is this the one where Superman and Batman are "evil" due to time travel by characters from the future?

Brenda Clough (brendaclough) | 163 comments Yes! And it is just about the best arc in this series. Rivaled only by the much later one which begins with the filming of a hysterically funny S/B movie.

Thanks Brenda. I remember reading that story back in 2007. Back in 2006-2007 I remember purchasing over 1,000+ comic books from this one story and I was blown away by this particular story. I remembered I felt sorry in the middle of the story for Oliver Queen/Green Arrow because (view spoiler). In fact, the World's Finest duo get to (view spoiler) This is going to be a great re-read for me, and I am looking forward to reading it again. And one of the best suprises in this story is the character that assumes the Green Lantern role. That was very imaginative.

Brenda Clough (brendaclough) | 163 comments It is unquestionably my favorite in the entire run of the title.

Mike | 289 comments Same here. Continued on when vol 1 was a group read last nov and reread vol 2 and 3. Just as good as I had remembered.

Although I admit I might not actually vote for it - Kingdom Come is one of my favorite stories of all time and is likely to swipe my support this time around.

I have to admit Kingdom Come is a fantastic read, as the story had some real depth. Kudos to Mark Waid.

Mike let me ask you a question. Do you think the other characters in the book thought Superman let them down in a way by going into a decade long self-imposed exile?

message 22: by Mike (new)

Mike | 289 comments Oh definitely. Some of them at least. That's actually one of the things that really impressed me about the writing - characters have varied reactions. Some of the "older" heroes followed Superman's lead and withdrew from the world in protest, some disagreed with his stance on Magog's actions and embraced the "new approach," and some shared Superman's outrage but stayed and fought and likely resented him "giving up."

Do you agree?

One of my favorite moments in the comic directly relates to this: (view spoiler)

Of course... (view spoiler)

Brenda Clough (brendaclough) | 163 comments There's a couple of big logical gaps in the structure of KINGDOM COME that I hope we can discuss.

message 24: by Mike (new)

Mike | 289 comments That would be really interesting. As much as I love KC it's certainly not without its flaws.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

No book is without its flaws, but that book had more depth. If I remember correctly there were four parts in this book, and each part would start with a quote from the New Testament book, Revelations. The epilogue did not start with a quote from Revelations though. It just goes to show you how important Revelations was to this story, when Mark Waid was writing it.

Brenda I'd be glad to discuss this or any other topics regarding other books with you.

Mike perhaps we can have a Buddy Reads on some books and create a topic for it and talk about them there.

How about you Brenda, would you mind joining us on a discussion on a Buddy Reads on some books?

Brenda Clough (brendaclough) | 163 comments I am in. I was sufficiently piqued by the GN version of KINGDOM COME so that I picked up the novel (novelization?) as well. Not sure it was made more clear thereby.
