Holli | 397 comments On the nurse challenge, does it have to be a nurse? Or can it be someone not a doctor? Like a corpsman? I have Lone Survivor and Service by Marcus Luttrell, who was one in the SEALs.

I don't think that one will count. I think it would actually have to use the job title nurse in the book. I'm sure I have one somewhere if no one else has. I need to finish the books I'm reading now first though.

message 156: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) How big a part does the nurse have to have? I'm reading a murder mystery now, there is a possibility a nurse will show up at some point.

Renee (reneeconoulty) | 3309 comments in the previous challenges the character had to have a speaking role in the book to count.

sorry Abbie, I think I might have considered quitting the challenge had I been paired with Ashur the syrian toad. I have a very intense hatred of that snake

message 159: by Ezi (new)

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) I think the person has to be an actual nurse. They don't have to be a main character but they at least have to speak i.e. "what's your level of pain today?"
LOL!

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) Magic Shifts (Kate Daniels, #8) by Ilona Andrews
Book: Magic Shifts by Ilona Andrews (352 pages)
Finished: August 5
Rating & Review: ★★★★. Anyone who wants a UF with a LOT of action, this is the series for you. There is always a big bad guy, big battles and great teamwork by Kate, Curran and the gang.
This was the first books since Curran stepped down as the Beast Lord and took Kate to live in the Surburbs.
That in itself is hilarious. Curran, big bad lion living in the 'Burbs. We all know that live with Curran and Kate will never be "quiet". It's not who or what they are.
As Ghastek told Kate, she is trouble because of her heritage. Those around her will always be fighting.

What I loved about this book is Curran and Kate's banter. I also loved seeing her dad as not Satan's right hand man, but as a man who loved Kate's mother. That was interesting to see another side of him. There was some foreshadowing in this book so I am looking forward to Last night of the Werewolf summer

what book did you read for your Book club? we read The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins and I didn't like it

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2447 comments I agree with Ezinwanyi - the Kate Daniels series is awesome! I hope to finish book 8 tonight, but it will be iffy.

message 164: by Ezi (new)

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) I have an hour left in Stray (Shifters, #1) by Rachel Vincent . then I can start my leek book.

I checked. We are smack dab in the middle (#10 of 19). So we aren't at the bottom :D

One group, I believe Gannicus' group has to read a book with Artichoke, LOL!
Although Leek was pretty hard to find

message 165: by Renee (new)

Renee (reneeconoulty) | 3309 comments Yeah the mods decided to put some harder ones in. Two of the other mods teams have got artichoke and another one got asparagus, so they're coming back to bite us! We were pretty lucky to fluke the Character starting with X the day after I finished reading a book with an X character.

Renee (reneeconoulty) | 3309 comments Updated to here

Current goals

Read a book that contains the word leek
Read a book which has the main location (setting) as Canada
Read a book where a character is a nurse

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Book completion The Sugar House (Tess Monaghan #5) by Laura Lippman Pages 304 8/6***

This was for my Mistry book club, it was OK, I'm reading Gemini by Carol Cassella in my fiction book club, this looks a lot better.
I did read The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins wasn't crazy about it, it was depressing and I really didn't care about the girls in this book.

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) Stray (Shifters, #1) by Rachel Vincent
Book: Stray by Rachel Vincent (618 pages)
Finished: August 5
Rating & Review: ★★★. I liked this one. Faythe is a cat shifter wanting some autonomy from her pride. She tries to live among humans until a crisis forces her home. Faythe has to deal with who she is, who she wants to be and who she can be in the future.
A good book 1 so I went ahead and bought book 2.

I've apparently slept real well since then. These power naps do wonders, don't they? Clears the mind of fog...and what you've told someone already. Oh well, I'm glad you liked the book. :-)

Holli | 397 comments I just realized one of the books I read previously will work for the nurse challenge. And, of course, it's an obvious one as well. :-)

The Hostile Hospital (A Series of Unfortunate Events, #8) by Lemony Snicket by Lemony Snicket
272 pages
Finished: 8/4/15
Rating: 2 stars
Challenge: A book where a character is a nurse: There are many real (and fake) nurses in this one with several speaking.
Review: *groans* Once more into the breach of unhappiness that is this series. Although, hearing Tim Curry singing the VFD song meant to cheer up everyone and make everything better at the hospital was silly and fun.

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) The Proposal (The Survivors' Club #1) by Mary Balogh
Book: The Proposal by Mary Balogh. (311 pages)
Task: Character visited a farm (Lady Gwen visited Lord Hugo's farm)
Finished: August 7
Rating & Review: ★★★. It was really slow. I never felt any angst or excitement but I applaud Mary Balogh for writing characters who have weathered serious issues, tragedies, disabilities etc

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) We are updated to here.
We had gotten two goals:
❖Read a book where the character had visited a farm (I used Proposal by Mary Balogh)
❖Read a book that is 6,7,8 or 9 in a series (I used On the Clock, Market Garden #8)

Current goals
❖Read a book that contains the word leek
❖Read a book which has the main location (setting) as Canada
➜Read a book that starts with the letter N

Yes; and the cheering peanut gallery ones. I think on some level I do like the books, they're just so depressing and wrong. Knowing me, I'll probably read them all the way through again sometime in the future. I'm strange that way. :-)

message 188: by Diane ~Firefly~ (new)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2447 comments A place to go and play board games all day. This is a smaller convention so there aren't many vendors/publishers, mostly just people playing games. They have a library of games you can check out or you can bring your own.

I'll be bringing a bag of games, although the only one I have definitely scheduled to play is Firefly: the Game (and it takes about 3-4 hours which is why I scheduled it).

Book: Fat Chance by Nick Spalding (288 pages)
Task: has the word "leek" ("With a muffled curse, I spat the potato and leek soup into the bin") on Pg 238.
Finished: August 8
Rating & Review: ★★★. this was a cute story about a girl Zoe who essentially blackmails her fiancée Greg into joining a weight-loss challenge offered by her favorite radio station (think The Biggest Loser Couple Edition). Greg used to be an athlete but now they just eat out a lot. So Zoe says if he didn't join her on this challenge, no more BJs. Can you guess Greg's response?

Moby-Dick; or, The Whale by Herman Melville Moby-Dick; or, The Whale 135 chapters (663 pages)

In the Language of Love A Novel in 100 Chapters by Diane Schoemperlen In the Language of Love: A Novel in 100 Chapters 100 chapters (368 pages)

I couldn't bear to read Moby Dick, but it's free if anyone else is interested. I've already read Life of Pi, but if anyone else hasn't, it was an interesting read. Great on audio.
