I believe they live in an island or somewhere and the mother paints or builds furniture in her garage. She spends her time helping the girl next door who is the daughter that hers can not be due to her handicap. She feels bad about this. After the daughter dies, the last part of the book is told from the daughters point of view and you find out she really had been able to understand everything going on and had tried to communicate. Real tear jerker. Sound familiar to anyone?

Christy, do you remember how many years ago you read this book? And, do you remember what sort of disability the daughter had?
I read this at least 14 years ago. The daughter was wheel chair bound with garbled speech, probably cerebral palsy.
I think that's it! Follow the stars home! I had forgotten about the uncle but that sounds familiar! Going to look it up at the library, thank you so much!
