Rachel (rachelunabridged) | 49 comments I finally struggled through the last half of Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. I didn't like it, for many reasons, so I'm glad to be done with it, honestly. Now I can focus on other books on my to-read shelf that I know I'll enjoy. xD;

About a week after that, I finished Bearers of the Black Staff, part one of the Legends of Shannara series. Very happy with this series so far, as I wasn't incredibly impressed with the Genesis of Shannara series before it. It's getting back into the epic fantasy genre and away from the urban fantasy setting of the previous two series, which is why I'm enjoying it more, I think. :)

I just read Off to Be the Wizard and I have to say I quite enjoyed it. I finished it off in two days so was a pretty quick read for me.

Zahn's stuff is great, Audrey. I've had the pleasure of not only reading Anderson's stuff, but I've met him several times and been to many of his presentations. He and his wife, Rebecca Moesta, cowrote the Junior Jedi Knights books and they are great people.

A friend of mine let me borrow the first three so I will be reading up to that point pretty soon. I am quite looking forward to enjoying the books.

Just finished Hyperion today and I must say I enjoyed it quite a bit. Bit of a cliff hanger ending though so I will have to read Fall of Hyperion in the near future.

I've met Kevin J. Andersen, too. He and his wife usually come to the local Comic Con, and that's been fun.

I also didn't like Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The show was good, though, because it changed lots.

Anthony Robilotta | 32 comments The last book i read was Les Miserables. I thought it was a great story but wow the author loves to go on tangents that have nothing to do with the story. I had to really force my way through it.

What are they about Lancer?

I read Lips Too Chilled, one of those 80p Penguin Classics books written by a Buddist monk. It was super short as it was haikus and some were quite beautiful and thoughtful but others were just odd or amusing.

Lancer wrote: "Just read the two Riyria Chronicles books and they were great!"

What an enjoyable series and the author can be seen on the fantasy subreddit and seems like a good guy.

I just finished The Iron Dragon's Daughter and it was just a terrible book. The plots starts out well with a human changeling trying to escape enforced labor and using a cyborg dragon to get out (I mean come on cyborg dragon how can you mess that up???) and then it turns into a book to see how many vices the main character Jane can participate in. And what a disjointed plot this book has, I have no idea what the author put half the scenes in the book for and what they were supposed to add to the book. I would not have finished the book if it didn't fit one of the book challenges and even with that I know I put the book down a few times with no intention of picking it up again.

message 362: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Haha, thanks Roger for letting me know to avoid that one! It actually came to my attention before, but something about seemed like I wouldn't enjoy it.

And thanks to you and Lancer for pointing me towards Riyria Chronicles. Sometimes I think I spend more time collecting books to read than I do actually reading :D

message 363: by Andrew (new)

Andrew I never read Wicked, though I kind of wanted to. I liked the musical, but I hear they are quite different (as you just said Audrey haha).

For all the hue and cry about it, I was kind of indifferent to Wicked. It was an interesting idea, but it never really grabbed me. Never seen the show.

I quite enjoyed the book and show but they are very different. The show is much lighter . The follow in to Wicked , Son of a Witch is actually really good.

Hi everyone, sorry for the late reply o had a wedding to attend where I was a groomsman.

You will want to read the Riyria Revelations Before Chronicles prequels as it will spoil some plot points and you will miss some tongue and cheek references. There are six books in revelations but I believed they were released as three omnibus of two books as they are all around 350-400 pages but the omnibus combine two to be around 700-800 pages and pretty much seem like one book.

It is just such a fun series and what he has done as a self published author (for revelations, chronicles I believe was publuahed) is amazing!

I've said before but I highly recommend them for anyone that wants a fun but fairly deep epic fantasy. I hope you guys/gals enjoy them as much as I did

I really want to see the musical but the book was not exactly what I was expecting as I was going on the musical trailers!

message 368: by Meera (new)

Meera | 58 comments The last book I read was Tower Lord which I really liked after I got used to the fact that this book had multiple perspectives rather than just Vaelin's. Then I couldn't put it down but I'm nervous about the last one Queen of Fire after having read some of the reviews. I've liked the first two books and would hate to end it in a bad note.

message 369: by Andrew (new)

Andrew I read The Black Lung Captain, the second book of The Ketty Jay series. MAN was this a fun adventure!

This is the kind of whirlwind, fun adventure I daydreamed about a kid, and the kind I wished we'd see more of. A part of me almost feels guilty giving it 5-stars, as it is not necessarily a masterpiece--nor does it try to be! It is pure adventure-pulp with lovable characters. But it is just too enjoyable to give it any less (ok, maybe an honest 4.5 stars). I can't criticize a fun adventure for not being a literary work of art, or yet another fantasy-adventure for hundreds of pages of politics. It succeeds brilliantly at being what it wants to be.

When I finished this book I checked how many books were left in the series (two, currently) and felt vaguely panicked. That's all?? I immediately used Goodreads "similar to this book" function to add about a dozen more steampunk books to my to-read pile. Which is irrational, because being in a similar genre does not guarantee giving a similar experience. But this book was that fun!

Lancer--you were definitely right about this series :) The minor complaints I had for the first book are gone by this one! :D

Meera , Tower Lord had some terrible reviews as well, but like me it sounds like you enjoyed it so you'll probably be fine.

Lancer (elancer) | 1667 comments Mod
Andrew I was very sad when I finished because the whole series is just as you described, and I have yet to find another series with that sort of setting that can match it. I would almost call the Riyria books the fantasy equivalent but that's about as close as I've come.

message 372: by Lancer, Warden of the Slums (new)

Lancer (elancer) | 1667 comments Mod
It seems, after perusing the reviews for Queen of Fire singer it is a love it or hate response. A lot of people disliked the ending of mass effect 3 but I rather enjoyed it, and can not wait for Mass effect 4.

I the kind of person who won't give up on an author (or game) for one poor showing in a tale I've enjoyed immensely. I would like to think most people are that way too or else some series never would have finished (cough cough wheel of time cough)

I haven't got to Chronicles yet, but I really loved the Riyria Revelations. If you buy from the author's website, he'll inscribe the books for you before shipping them.

I've read the first one Half a King, and really enjoyed it, but have yet to run into a paperback copy of half the world, so I may end up getting an ebook copy like it did for half a King. I have really enjoyed everything I have read of abercrombie (first law trilogy and the 3 stand alones).

Now I have had numerous recommendations for Brian Stavely so may have to read that once I finish Queen of Fire.

Brian Staveley is quite similar to Anthony Ryan. Theres definite similarities between Emperors Blades and Blood Song.( plus both have a main character called Vaelin)

I finished The Enemy. Not one I would recommend. First and foremost, despite descriptions, it is not about zombies. (I was craving a zombie novel.) They're more like diseased cannibals.
The story line and characters were not very good either.

message 389: by Freya, Dragon Rider (new)

Freya (flamecat) | 1835 comments Mod
I can understand your annoyance, that reads like a zombie novel to me from the blurb!

Just finished one of those little black penguin classics books on Emily Bronte's poetry - depressing

message 390: by Meera (new)

Meera | 58 comments That's too bad about the The Enemy. It's in my tbr.

I finished Lock In, my first by this author, and I really liked it. I didn't realize it was part of a series when I picked it up but I'll continue. I also finished The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski which was a YA fantasy and it was also good so I'll continue with that as well.

late to the party but just finished Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch. It was alright, but I didn't find it brilliant, which is a shame as i've enjoyed both Pratchett and Gaiman books very much separately...

I've requested Redshirts from the library since it's a standalone and already on my tbr. Hope it's as good.

I'm currently reading The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson which is YA fantasy. It's moving fast so I'll probably be done with it soon.

message 396: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lml369_07) | 58 comments I recently finished The Martian and Station Eleven. I loved loved The Martian and cannot wait until the movie. The one and only complaint I had was that I wish there was just one more chapter at the end. It was funny and witty and suspenseful and flowed nicely as it switches between Mark Watney's information logs and the point of view of everyone on Earth with a nice mix of ominous storytelling in between. Fantastic read!
Station Eleven was pretty great too! Not the greatest work of fiction in recent years or anything like that but it was a very unique point of view on a post apocalyptic world. It was a good little read that I was able to get through in a couple of days. The way it described the events that caused the downfall of society was enough to worry the average germaphobe because of how probable it seemed. The story flowed well between past and present and the only thing I would have like to have seen was maybe a bit more information on Jeevan. He wasn't exactly my favorite character or anything, it just seemed like there was more story there that didn't get included like it did for a lot of the other characters. I enjoyed it and would recommend it if you're looking for an interesting and quick read on the 'end of the world'

message 397: by Meera (new)

Meera | 58 comments I loved The Martian! But I kind of gave up on Station Eleven but I'll pick it up again.

I have been reading some YA fantasy/sci-fi- These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman - 4, Thorn by Intisar Khanani- 2.5 and The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson - 3.5.

I'm now taking a break from YA books and reading The Emperor's Blades by Brian Staveley. I like 2 out of the 3 characters I've met so far so that's good.
