I just finished The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - I love love love loved it! If you liked Farscape the TV show, then I totally recommend it. It reminded me a lot of it.
If you've never heard of Farscape still read it!
I can totally see why it was shortlisted for the Arthur C Clarke award. Brilliant!

Rinn... I know, right?! It just totally took over my life for the last day (sorry Ivy). I was so totally THERE, I can't wait till October for the next wahhhhh.
Rinn wrote: "I love how it was way more about the people than the space stuff (even tho I love space stuff)."
Totally. I loved not only getting to know the characters, but the races and cultures too.

Rinn and Kirsty, this book sounds fantastic. I just checked my library and they do not have it yet, so I have requested that they add it to the collection. They have been 50/50 so far on adding books that I have recommended, so I have high hopes.

If y..."
Just FYI, there's a GR giveaway going on for this right now.

Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl (4 stars) - a surreal absurdist retelling of the story of Orpheus and his love Eurydice. A one-act play and a very quick read. Absurdist plays aren't always my thing, but I liked this one.
Uprooted by Naomi Novik (4 stars) - a delightfully entertaining fantasy story about a young witch and an evil, magical wood. I really enjoyed this one.
Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters (3.5 stars) - a piece of historical fiction about a lesbian in Victorian England. The first third of the book was great - nuanced, psychologically perceptive, funny, and beautifully written; for me, the other two thirds wasn't quite as good.
Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels (4.5 stars) - I loved this book, but it isn't for everyone. The plot is very thin; on the surface, it's a story about a boy who survives the Holocaust and later becomes a poet, but really, it's an extended meditation on history and the psychology of surviving something unimaginable (survival afterwards - the aftermath). The author has written books of poetry herself, and I'm not surprised; the novel moves like poetry, by depth and intuition rather than by the press of events. Not fast paced at all but perceptive. Extraordinarily vivid language!
And now I'm currently reading: Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë (enjoying it so far), The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher (silly but wildly entertaining so far, talking cats!), and Amoris Laetitia-- The Joy of Love: On Love in the Family by Pope Francis.

After hearing Rinn rave about this book I added it to my TBR pile and by the time I checked my phone a few minutes later I got an email stating there was a giveaway going on.

I almost didnt...didn't want my odds of winning to go down :)

The Passage was the far more interesting
The Travelers. Nicely twisty plot, good characterization, well paced. Not a 24-hour whirlwind, but a more realistic, gradually building bit of shadow play.
The Passage definitely suffers in comparison.

I enjoyed that book.

....and Veronica...I love the Vizsla pup pic! I am owned (controlled) by two Vizslas. ;o)

That good, huh Audrey? lol
I've never read any Sarah J Mass, so can't comment on the writing or story, but I really dislike her book covers

A very handsome dog. :-)

I don't like the one that's shown above, but the UK ones are cool:

My issue with them is pretty much every single cover for her books is the same thing but in a different stance.

The days of great cover art are pretty much gone. There are still covers being done by the likes of Michael Whelan, but most covers are generic junk.
There are still some great covers out there. The long list for cover art for the Gemell awards has some great ones there. My current favorite cover artist is Marc Simonetti, who has done the covers for Michael J Sullivans upcoming series as well as some great GoT, King killer chronicles and Discworld covers.

I vote for the latter.
I always preferred the Paul Kidby ones to the Josh Kirby. Simonetti does the French covers and they are great. The new Gollancz editions have another set of covers but they arent great. The very original artwork for Colour of Magic was very different as well, quit scifi in style but very rare these days.

That Soul Music cover rocks!....Pun intended.
Nice. Yeah I have the BCA edition of CoM as well. I prefer the Kidby edition that followed it .
You've been reading Discworld quite a while then :-)

I agree with Gary, this cover rocks!
I thought I'd seen all of the Discworld covers but this one is new.
They are the French translations Dawn.
Cool Gary. I'll have to do a re read myself at some point. Its been a while. I plan to do the watch books in order later this year (Vimes is my favourite character)

Heres the Deviant Art page for the French Discworld books. I particuarly like Night Watch which was also my favourite Kidby cover.

I love John Jude Palancar's art/paintings on Charles de Lint's book covers.
