Greg Tatum | 8 comments I just finished reading The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. Highly recommended, if you like character driven, emotionally intense, first contact sci-fi.

Margo My husband is that one at the moment. I'm not a big fan of Holmes. I won't show him your reveiw ;-)

Dawn | 1250 comments He may still like it Margo, and you Lel. Looking at the reviews it definitely seems to be one of those 'love it or hate it' books

I just finished The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet - I love love love loved it! If you liked Farscape the TV show, then I totally recommend it. It reminded me a lot of it.

If you've never heard of Farscape still read it!

I can totally see why it was shortlisted for the Arthur C Clarke award. Brilliant!

Rinn and Kirsty, this book sounds fantastic. I just checked my library and they do not have it yet, so I have requested that they add it to the collection. They have been 50/50 so far on adding books that I have recommended, so I have high hopes.

message 866: by Greg (last edited Jun 02, 2016 10:10PM) (new)

Greg | 1471 comments I recently finished:

Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl (4 stars) - a surreal absurdist retelling of the story of Orpheus and his love Eurydice. A one-act play and a very quick read. Absurdist plays aren't always my thing, but I liked this one.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik (4 stars) - a delightfully entertaining fantasy story about a young witch and an evil, magical wood. I really enjoyed this one.

Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters (3.5 stars) - a piece of historical fiction about a lesbian in Victorian England. The first third of the book was great - nuanced, psychologically perceptive, funny, and beautifully written; for me, the other two thirds wasn't quite as good.

Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels (4.5 stars) - I loved this book, but it isn't for everyone. The plot is very thin; on the surface, it's a story about a boy who survives the Holocaust and later becomes a poet, but really, it's an extended meditation on history and the psychology of surviving something unimaginable (survival afterwards - the aftermath). The author has written books of poetry herself, and I'm not surprised; the novel moves like poetry, by depth and intuition rather than by the press of events. Not fast paced at all but perceptive. Extraordinarily vivid language!

And now I'm currently reading: Agnes Grey by Anne Brontë (enjoying it so far), The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher (silly but wildly entertaining so far, talking cats!), and Amoris Laetitia-- The Joy of Love: On Love in the Family by Pope Francis.

100% worth the effort of creating all those accounts for that book :P

message 876: by Sparrow Knight (new)

Sparrow Knight The book I finished before I got sucked into the dull brown world of
The Passage was the far more interesting
The Travelers. Nicely twisty plot, good characterization, well paced. Not a 24-hour whirlwind, but a more realistic, gradually building bit of shadow play.

The Passage definitely suffers in comparison.

Jessica | 446 comments I just finished The Exodus Towers by Jason Hough. This was #2 in the Dire Earth series, and I did not enjoy it as much as the first one, The Darwin Elevator, but it was still good. I'd give it 3.5 stars, if I could...so now I'm torn between giving it a 3 or a 4.
....and Veronica...I love the Vizsla pup pic! I am owned (controlled) by two Vizslas. ;o)

I don't like the one that's shown above, but the UK ones are cool:

Queen of Shadows (Throne of Glass, #4) by Sarah J. Maas

My issue with them is pretty much every single cover for her books is the same thing but in a different stance.

message 885: by Milou (new)

Milou | 106 comments I really didn't like Throne of Glass, 2nd book was slightly better but it still flew against the wall a Lot. Sadly I bought all 4 books because of the hype and I thought I would love it. Such a waste of money and bookshelf space :(

message 886: by Gary (new)

Gary Sundell | 178 comments sir Lancer wrote: "My issue with them is pretty much every single cover for her books is the same thing but in a different stance."

The days of great cover art are pretty much gone. There are still covers being done by the likes of Michael Whelan, but most covers are generic junk.

message 887: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
There are still some great covers out there. The long list for cover art for the Gemell awards has some great ones there. My current favorite cover artist is Marc Simonetti, who has done the covers for Michael J Sullivans upcoming series as well as some great GoT, King killer chronicles and Discworld covers.

message 888: by Gary (new)

Gary Sundell | 178 comments The current E-book covers for the Discworld books are generic. The original covers by the late Josh Kirby and the newer work by Paul Kidby would be preferred Pyramids (Discworld, #7) by Terry Pratchett as opposed to Pyramids (Discworld, #7) by Terry Pratchett . Which is the better cover?

I vote for the latter.

message 889: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
I always preferred the Paul Kidby ones to the Josh Kirby. Simonetti does the French covers and they are great. The new Gollancz editions have another set of covers but they arent great. The very original artwork for Colour of Magic was very different as well, quit scifi in style but very rare these days.

Gary Sundell | 178 comments I have the SF Book club edition of Color of Magic with its original cover. I bought it when it was released through the book club right after the book's original publishing date. (For those in Canada and Great Britain The Colour of Magic)

That Soul Music cover rocks!....Pun intended.

Nice. Yeah I have the BCA edition of CoM as well. I prefer the Kidby edition that followed it .
You've been reading Discworld quite a while then :-)

The Onion Girl (Newford, #8) by Charles de Lint Trader (Newford, #4) by Charles de Lint The Mystery of Grace by Charles de Lint
