Stieg Larsson's The Girl Who Played with Fire is definitely next on my list. Then it's either Louis de Bernieres's "Captain Corelli's Mandolin":, Jane Austen's Persuasion (re-reading for the nth time, hehehehe) or some other book I bring from my TBR list =)

Do I get brownie points? I just finished
Atlas Shrugged
by Ayn Rand, and this was my first Rand. The plot was interesting but man, did she hit us over the head with that philosophy, ow.Now, lighter stuff: either I'll pick up Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane or I Love You Phillip Morris: A True Story of Life, Love, & Prison Breaks by Steve McVicker, both movies I want to see.
Good job, Susanna. I read (and admit to liking) The Fountainhead. I started to read Atlas almost immediately after and realized A) that is too much Rand for anyone; B) it seemed to be the same story and I wasn't ready for a re-read; and C) I may have problems, but I'm not masochistic. And yes, she did not make a subtle point. :)
Next on my list is Gus the Great by Thomas W. Duncan. I'm a few pages into it, but received Guest House by Barbara K. Richardson & put Gus the Great down to start reading it. ; )
Chantelle wrote: "Carole, I know it. Feast or famine with me - I'm in the middle of feasting season. :)"Good for you! :)
carol (akittykat) wrote: "Waiting waiting for my books from amazon. Now I don't even remember what I ordered. Bah!"Don't you just hate it when they take so long to come?

I'm a masochist, I'm actually thinking about reading more Rand at some point but that will be far into the future now.
Congratulations, Susanna. It's okay to admit that you skipped some of those lengthy speeches toward the end. We all did.Have fun with 1984, Jo!
Alex wrote: "Congratulations, Susanna. It's okay to admit that you skipped some of those lengthy speeches toward the end. We all did."Thanks, Alex. Funnily enough, I didn't skip any of it. I read through it but I was definitely in a coma because I remember none of it except... nooo, none of it.
I think next up for me will be My Brother's Keeper: The Official Bra Boys Story.
I really want to start Marked by PC Cast but I'm fairly certain once I've finished it I'll want to start the next one in the series which I can't do as I don't own them yet and I'm on a "no more buying until all TBR's are read" kick.

I was going to try to get all these finished before bringing any new books into the house, however I failed at that as I had a little splure, but I'm sticking to my list. It helps me to have a goal in mind and I don't have to worry about what's next:
So my progress:
Don't Sleep, There Are Snakes: Life and Language in the Amazonian Jungle- READ
The Unnamed- CURRENTLY READING
The Help
The End of Manners: A Novel- CURRENTLY READING
When You Reach Me- READ
Wolf Hall
Cutting for Stone
Secrets of Eden: A Novel
Last Night in Twisted River
Worst Case
GRRM's A Clash of Kings will be a bit of long read but I plan on starting Robert Ludlum's The Paris Option on Thursday as I travel back home for Easter weekend. It's a lot smaller than the book I'm reading right now so it should be easy to carry along, lol =)
Can't decide if I want to move on to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or One Hundred Years of Solitude. I've also got City of Bones waiting on me as a lighter read. Decisions, decisions.
I vote One Hundred Years, Michelle. Fiona, many people love those books. They're said to be scrupulously researched. Let us know how it works for you!
Michelle wrote: "Can't decide if I want to move on to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or One Hundred Years of Solitude. I've also got City of Bones waiting on me as a lighter..."I loved The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Michelle.
NOOOOOO 100 Years! Shut up Kathy! Let's fight over which book Michelle should read next. :PFiona, I've found out that re-learning history on my own time with my own books is way more fun than school was. This is a perfect example: school would never let you read McCullough, but why not? It's accurate and it's not deadly boring!

Well, Alex I haven't read 100 Years, yet, so it probably wouldn't be fair to criticize it. Have you read Dragon Tattoo? Actually, the second book in the series, The Girl Who Played with Fire, was even better than the first one. I'm getting read to read the third and final one, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest, next. It's really a great series. And, sorry, dear Alex, it's not in my nature to "shut up." LOL! Read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo everyone!!!!!!!!!!!
Nope! I haven't read Dragon Tattoo, although I know about a million people who have and every single one of them loved it. I just enjoy having opinions. Don't actually shut up, of course. I was kidding. :)
Ha, you guys are great! Although I'm not sure you've done more than make the decision even MORE agonizing. However, put into consideration: my inlaws are coming this week. Maybe "great fun" will be needed?
Oh, in that case it doesn't matter what you read; once you take a fistful of Vicodins, you won't remember it anyway. In the absence of Vicodin, I think I switch my vote. You'll need a page-turner for this, and while 100 Years is brilliant, it's not the world's easiest read.

LOL! I agree with the Vicodin for the in-law visit, Alex, and perhaps an appliance manual to further dull the senses.

Oh, I know you were kidding about the shut-up. I do admit to having a guilt trip about 100 Years, one of those books I think I should have read already, probably why I haven't--rebelling against what I should do. LOL
Michelle wrote: "Ha, you guys are great! Although I'm not sure you've done more than make the decision even MORE agonizing. However, put into consideration: my inlaws are coming this week. Maybe "great fun" will be..."Whatever you read, I hope it allows you to escape to another world for a little while each day. I'm getting ready to go to my mother-in-law's for lunch where her judgmental sister will be in attendance. What will save me is that my daughter is coming with her baby that everyone wants to see, so the scrutiny will be off of me with the transfer of adoration to the baby. Whew!
I'm all out of Vicodin but I did buy some wine! And while I'm being too harsh on my in-laws, they are very good to me, she is definitely a talker and anything that will take all my concentration will not get the attention it deserves. So, mystery it is, 100 years will follow soon.Kathy, good luck at lunch, babies make everything endurable!

So I really really wanted to read "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" next but I'm number 14 on the library waiting list! Need something in the meantime, so I'm looking at my real-life bookshelf and I see these possibilities...
- The Alienist, Caleb Carr
- One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ken Kesey
- Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck
- The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Milan Kundera
- A Walk in the Woods, Bill Bryson
I was really sort of hoping for a tense thriller mystery-type next, so The Alienist is high on the list. But of course all the rest of those books need to be read eventually too. Can you guys help me figure out what I'm in the mood for? Thanks, as always!
I've read several of those. It's been a while since Cuckoo's Nest, but I loved it at the time; as far as I remember it was a gripping story.Mice and Men is great and it only takes like ten minutes to read. And then you'll be able to say you've read it. I found the story very engaging.
Walk in the Woods is entertaining. Some people don't care for Bryson's humor, but most people like him; if you're not having a good time after two chapters, don't force it.
I hear what you're saying about Mice and Men, Alex. It is definitely the shortest book on my entire shelf!

I agree with Chantelle and Mary. It was good.
Michelle wrote: "Can't decide if I want to move on to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or One Hundred Years of Solitude. I've also got City of Bones waiting on me as a lighter..."The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and One Hundred Years of Solitude were both great reads =)
I'm not sure what my next read is going to be from my TBR list as I'll be back at university for the remaining two weeks of the semester. When I get back for the summer vacation, I'll likely start with either du Maurier's Rebecca or maybe Byatt's Possession. Or Martel's Wolf Hall. lol, so may choices...
Rebecca and Possession are both on my list of potential summer reads too... And Katherineby Anya Seton... :-)
Kristin wrote: "Rebecca and Possession are both on my list of potential summer reads too... And Katherineby Anya Seton... :-)"oooh, "Rebecca" is one of my favorites.
Either an Irish historical novel, Lion of Ireland by Morgan Llywelyn or Red Tide a thriller by G.M Ford.
Well, I bought Ariana Franklin's new Adelia Aguilar novel, A Murderous Procession, so I will probably go ahead and read it after finishing Lincoln's Dreams by Connie Willis. Then, hopefully get to The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest (bought it from Book Deposit so I wouldn't have to wait until this summer in the states for it), Hell Gate by Linda Fairstein, and later this month, The God of the Hive by Laurie R. King (comes out on the 27th). I have a whole slew of books to fit in besides these, too.
my next book is nora roberts black rose
Next on my list is World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Marti wrote: "My next books are The Girl Who Played with Fire, Set Me Free, and/or A River in the Sky."I'm reading The Girl Who Played with Fire and it's so much better than The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, if that's possible.
