Thanks, Coralie, for prodding us towards thought-provoking books!

What sort of themes will you be looking for in your reads in Feb?

message 2: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9034 comments Mod
well... that was easier than I thought!

The Crucible is on a ScatterShelves book for me so I might read that

Also found Insurgent & Allegiant a few books down from The Crucible, errr... not the type of books I imagine to be truly thought-provoking but as I've been planning to read these "soon" for ages, I might give it a shot, if I get there :)

message 3: by LynnB (new)

LynnB | 1770 comments Think I'll be reading And the Mountains Echoed by Khaled Hosseini for this shelf. Also Me Before You by Jojo Moyes and The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom which are on my Scattershelves list for February.

ooh, I didn't go further than page 2, ha ha ha, was feeling lazy this morning...

But, And the Mountains Echoed is on my ScatterShelves list too, thanks, LynnB :D

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments i don't knwo if I would call either Insurgent or Allegiant thought-provoking, in fact, allegiant was a DNF for me...

I found these 5 which are presently in my home: 3 library books Les Misérables by Victor Hugo , Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer and Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes , and 2 owned books My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See .

I expect to complete Les Mis by the end of the month. The others will be read as library books first, my own second.

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9034 comments Mod
ooh - so close to finishing of Les Mis!

Enjoy Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close! I've read it ages ago and am trying to psych myself to watch the movie (just because it's got serious theme so I got to really be in the mood for it).

What's really fascinating to me about this shelf is that, even though many people have shelved things there, there seems to be very little agreement about what books belong on it. For example, by the bottom of the first page, only 24 people had shelved that book there.

Oh, you have some good ones listed there, DG!

message 11: by Susan (new)

Susan | 3756 comments Mod
Wow! I clearly have the wrong books on my Scattershelves list! I didn't find a single book from it in the first 10 pages of the shelf.

There are lots of great books, here though, so I might wait to pick one after 2/15 when the March scattershelves are announced.

message 12: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments Yup, plenty of good choices there. I looked for like 20 pages because I wanted to have plenty of choices. My goal this year is to read books that have been on my TBR a while and most of these fit the bill. I think I've gotten a lot into UF and Romance that I've been abandoning more 'serious' books. This shelf will be great for me to work on those.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Lots of good choices on this list. I plan to read Blindness by José Saramago. I've read his Death with Interruptions and had mixed feelings about the book. I've heard that Blindness is his best work.

I haven't either, Nadine. It's on my to-read list for sure so I'll get there one day.

Dogsandbooksanddogsandbooks My Age of Anxiety: Fear, Hope, Dread, and the Search for Peace of Mind My Age of Anxiety Fear, Hope, Dread, and the Search for Peace of Mind by Scott Stossel (EBook) by Scott Stossel
This is the Feb Challenge Book, Thought Provoking. I checked out the reviews for it through Entertainment Weekly and I was hooked. Parts Memoir, educational, and all thought provoking. But I am going to add I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak by Markus Zusak (Paperback) for some levity and diversion from the serious stuff.

Life After Life was one of my few 5 star books for last year and definitely deserves to be on the thought provoking shelf. I wish I had it to read still. Amazing book.

Talk about lazy...I perused what you all had listed, and here is what I have on my shelves:

Me Before You
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Tell the Wolves I'm Home
The Night Circus
Heart of Darkness
Blindness
I Am the Messenger
The Help
Mockingjay

I think I will start with Me Before You, Tell the Wolves I'm Home, and/or I Am the Messenger
since they fit into other challenges that I am doing.

Sean-Michael, click on the words "thought provoking" in the first post of this thread.

Dogsandbooksanddogsandbooks How do I find a book on thought provoking shelf without scanning through so many? Is there a way to do a search in this list? Thanks for the help.

Matt - Just above the comment box click on "add book/author" -- search for the one you want -- at the bottom of the search box you can choose to use "link" or "cover" -- then click "add".

Dogsandbooksanddogsandbooks Is there a way to do a search on the thought provoking list, in particular? With so many to choose from I like to see if some from my TBR are on the list.

message 50: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Good morning,

I'm new here but thought I would chime in. I have a couple of TBR books I think fit the bill -

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson , The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins , and Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan are actually here in the house, though there are several others I've had my eye on for a while.

Mr. Penumbra was just purchased yesterday and has been begging a read for some months. I think I shall start there.
