I just finished this recently and it was very entertaining. It was very thought-provoking and gave me insight into a very disturbing time in American history that I didn't really know too much about (non-American here).
What do you think about?

is it better than the movie? I have been told it's a really good book. will add it to my list.

A bit of background on my experiences with this book:
I worked at a bookstore (Waldenbooks, owned by Borders which went under in 2011) when this book came out. We couldn't keep copies in stock long enough for me to borrow one to read.
When the movie came out, I was working at Walmart. I saw an entire endcap full of copies of this book, but couldn't get one that day as I wouldn't get paid for another two days. When I went to pick up a copy two days later, they were gone. Every last one.
Sometime last year (I think), the BBC did a radio drama adaptation of it. I listened to that on the BBC website with my husband. We loved it. I knew I had to read it.
Finally, a copy became available at my local library. (Probably several months before I thought to check.) I checked it out and am finally reading it. I'm not very far into the book, but I know I'm going to like it. I like what I've read so far (all of three chapters; head cold is making it hard to concentrate on anything).
I don't know if it's better than the movie as I haven't seen the movie. But it is over 400 pages, so I'm sure the movie didn't cover everything. ^_^

Wow, you really had the worst luck with this book. I hope it's finally worth all the hoops you've had to jump through to read it.
