Discworld - Terry Pratchett
I saw the movie/mini-series thing. It's not bad, from what I recall, and Tim Curry's in it, so there's that.
I read a bit of The Light Fantastic this weekend, but not as much as I wanted to.Between sleep *deprivation and my Broncos getting smeared, I didn't get much reading done.
*Wasn't entirely a bad thing, as I was up late tending to my 6-week old grandson...

I finished it this weekend. Enjoyed it much more than the Color of Magic. I found myself laughing out loud and grinning at my Nook more times than I care to admit. Had to "tame" myself during lunch time so I wouldn't look like such a loon. (view spoiler)
Yes, it's definitely more enjoyable...I'll probably finish it tonight or tomorrow if I don't fall asleep.
Cool deal, Stephanie.I finished it last weekend and I agree. Much more readable and more funny moments.

I think Equal Rites is the first *especially* good Discworld book, (and Mort was the first I read, and I think you can read Small Gods out of sequence, but) most of the books work best if you read them in order of publication.
Er, imho.
(My kids are named Sam and Adam after Night Watch and Good Omens, respectively, so I'm not really objective here....)
^Lol. I like Sam as a name a lot. Equal Rites might be my favourite out of the twenty I've read so far.
Small Gods is a favorite of mine. I think it's a pretty good place to start, since it establishes the tone of the series without having know the regular cast of characters. I read Night Watch next, and though it was enjoyable, I had a bit of trouble keeping the characters straight. I'll probably have to read it again sometime now that I've read more books and know the City Watch much better.
Probably after I finish The Way of Kings and Fall of Kings (doing the choochoo train challenge for HF). I estimate around March 17th or 20th. Does that work for you or are you starting sooner?
No, that sounds good. I'm still working on Way of Kings too. I'll actually probably still be working on Way of Kings.....
LOL. I imagine so. I've been reading consistently every day and it's still taking me a long time to finish. I'm hoping to be done this weekend though.
I was going to start Equal Rites this weekend, but I'm fighting off a cold. So I will hold off until I feel better. My attention span is short right now.
Finished Equal Rites last week. Excellent story. Didn't strike me quite as strong as the first two, but I still enjoyed it. I loved the wit, but there wasn't a lot of humor in this one.
The first two are rather discordant with the rest of the series; he hadn't gotten the world quite down.
Just ordered a copy of the Witches Trilogy. Took FOREVER for a copy to become available in my price point.
I have Equal Rites. I actually have all the Discworld books... but I shouldn't go there. I'm in the mood for a good silly book. I think I'll read it... maybe tomorrow.

I started last night and it's just what I needed. I've been trying to get thru Feast for Crows and it just wasn't working. Not sure if it's all the stuff going on for me right now or the book - it definitely isn't as good as the first three. Anyway. I'm actually really enjoying Equal Rites.
Chris wrote: "Well damn, Jackie. Disregard my last question in the pm. lol"Ha! Are you going to start it soon too?
I'm not going to get through this one fast because I have like 2 other books I need to get through. The Serpent and The Pearl for the HF group, which is my current read at home read and Wind in the Willows for the library group that is meeting this week.
I might. I have an opening in my Portable Nook slot, for lunch breaks at work. Because you know I don't carry TWOK to work.
True, and I do have an ecopy of it. Snuck a chapter in before work.Usually with those bricks I like the book, since there's always glossaries and maps. Such a pain in the ass to flip around on a Nook.
Though it's easier on the HD than the old one. And I can enlarge maps and actually see them with my own eyes! Hehe
I would highly recommend Good Omens, by T Pratchett and Neil Gaiman http://www.amazon.co.uk/Good-Omens-Ne...I laughed an awful lot when reading this book.
I've read all the Discworld books except for the most recent one, which I'm currently reading. I don't think the series really worked for me until around the fourth or fifth book, when old Pratch stopped trying to be Douglas Adams and started making his books about something.
I'm about 30% in, and liking this quite a bit more than the first two. It feels more like a story, rather than just a whacky bit of random stuff.
I'm enjoying Equal Rites more than the first two too. It has more story to it. And I just love Granny. It's humorous but with less satire. If I remember correctly the later Rincewind books are better than the first two. Though, I do tend to like them more than other readers.
I also remember the later Rincewind books being better. It's funny how the first Discworld book I read was the Rincewind omnibus from the Science Fiction Book Club but he's now my least favorite recurring character.

I second this recommendation. One of my favourites.

As far as I know, they only did one other Discworld omnibus. I think it was called Tales of Discworld or something like that, and had Small Gods, Pyramids, and possibly Moving Pictures in it.
Just wait until they publish the entire Discworld series as one big ebook. Like they did with Malazan.
Chris wrote: "Just wait until they publish the entire Discworld series as one big ebook. Like they did with Malazan."I'd be stuck at 1% done for weeks.
They have a lot of DiscWorld omnibus. Though I guess it means what you mean. THe book I just bought contains 3 Witch books. There's also a Gods trilogy and a Rincewald Trilogy. Not to mention the Wee Free Men's first two books are together, too.

LOL. I have a spreadsheet in which I track my series. It says I've got 6,417 pages left to read in Discworld.
Homeinmyshoes wrote: "LOL. I have a spreadsheet in which I track my series. It says I've got 6,417 pages left to read in Discworld."I would find that so discouraging. :/
Currently, I'm trying to work my way through the Narnia omnibus. I think I need like 4 more stories to finish up, but every time I see how many pages that is I get overwhelmed. I had to break up the stories with bookmarks so I can see the books rather than the pages needed.
For Discworld, it's all good. I love the books so it's 6,417 pages of fun for me to enjoy at some point. It's a series for which I'll be sad when I am caught up. At three or four titles a year, I still have five years before I have to face that issue.

So much will power...
Finished Equal Rites yesterday. It was exactly what I needed. Something light and funny. Surprisingly cute too with just a hint of romance. I really enjoyed it more than I expected. I didn't think I liked the Witches books as much as the others - I love the Tiffany Aching books though. My only problem with it would be I thought the ending was a little abrupt. But I loved the book. So far my favorite of the first 3.

I can see having no memory of it. For such a short book it packed a lot of adventure and whimsy.
Has anyone here seen the movie? My library has it and I was wondering if it was worth checking out.
