Kat | 84 comments Welcome Welcome Welcome!
To all of my returning champs: congratulations.
To all of my contestants who didn't quite make it: kudos for being willing to try again.
To all of my newbies: let the fun begin.

It's the second day of a new year which means a new reading challenge. We all know that there are more books written than anyone could ever possibly read in a lifetime but we sure are willing to try! This year, whether you are maintaining your number of books or upping it or reducing it, I wish you all the best of luck in this endeavor.

This page will be used to track our progress as a group and to share any interesting finds that we come across. Don't be afraid to ask for encouragement or start a private conversation with someone about a book. This is a nonjudgemental place where we have gathered for a common purpose: to read as many books as possible.

I have just set my challenge to the lofty goal of 100 books for 2014.
What's your number?

message 2: by Mica (new)

Mica (micaelaip) 100 books for 2014? Mine too! I'm reading "Millennium" right now. Is there anyone who has read an amazing book or serie who wants to recommend it? lol

Jess the Shelf-Declared Bibliophile (jessicalewis) I'm a newbie to the challenge! I'm shooting for 150, I hope I make it! :)

message 4: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments I've set my goal for 50 this year. I'm not going to have too much time for reading the beginning of the year, so I figure 50 is a pretty good goal and I can always increase it later. :)

Micaela -
I don't know what your taste in books is, but some of my favorite reads this past year were:
Me Before You - beautiful story about a person's right to be able to end their life - tear jerker.
The Storyteller - a holocaust story with a current day story line mixed in.
Graceling - YA. Sort of a medieval setting, but some characters are born with paranormal powers. Very interesting!
The Passage - Horror apocalyptic & post-apocalyptic with vampires.
Doctor Sleep - Stephen King, always a great storyteller. Definitely not his scariest book, but kept the pages turning.
Neverwhere - fantasy by Neil Gaiman. I'm not a huge Gaiman fan and I don't know if I'd say this was a favorite read of the year, but I really enjoyed it. There is a secret world below London.

Brandy I have a goal of 110 books. Some will be audio and others will be read by my own eyes. I am getting a new Kindle (it's on backorder :( ) so I want to do a lot of reading on that this year. However I cannot sit at my desk and read all day or drive and read, so that is where all my audio books will come into play. Just one of the reasons I love audio. Plus I have a ton of books that I promised people I would read this year. I love the recommendations!

message 6: by Sam (new)

Sam (sam222) Wow all your goals dwarf mine, I'm hoping to read 25, that's what I read last year but last year I almost didn't make it so this year I'm wanting to read 25 without feeling stressed that I won't make it. Actually I set it for 25 but I would like to get to 30.

message 7: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 72 comments last year I set mine for 50 originally then ended up bumping it up to 60. My final count for the year was 67 so I think I'll start with 60 this year :-) YAY! I'm already in the middle of 3 books so we'll see. (secretly hoping to get over 70) :-)

Thank you so much for the recommendations! There were some books I've already planned to read this year, let's see if they are as good as you say. I have no doubts they will be awesome.
I hope you all get some lifetime to complete this challenge and find amazing books!

message 9: by Donna (new)

Donna Nowosielski | 143 comments Last year I read 87. I set this years goal at 60 because I am challenging myself to read different types of books. I want to read more of the classics and top authors I have never read. I also pick the same genres witches / romantic / romantic suspense, I would like explore other genres.

message 10: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (age1213) | 20 comments I'm going to try and read 60 books! I graduate college in May, YAY!, so hopefully after that I can find some downtime, and a job, where I can read to my hearts content. :)

message 11: by Mattie (new)

Mattie | 5 comments my book goal this year was 20. this year it shall be 40, hopefully I can do it between work, school and more school. I'm always open to suggestions, I like fiction, YA, memoir, and dystopian books.

Kat | 84 comments Micaela wrote: "100 books for 2014? Mine too! I'm reading "Millennium" right now. Is there anyone who has read an amazing book or serie who wants to recommend it? lol"

I would also recommend the Legend Series by Marie Lu and second the recommendation of Graceling by Kristin Cashore.

Other series of note:
The Selection by Kiera Cass (warning! last book not out yet)
Maze Runner by James Dashner
The Demon King by Cinda Chima Williams

Great stand-alones:
45 pounds, more or less by K.A. Barson
The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Belfort (technically this one does have a sequel)
The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown
Project Cain by Geoffry Girard

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

I have read one book out of my goal of 100 for 2014. The first book I read for the year was The One And Only Ivan. I gave it three stars.

message 14: by Joanie (new)

Joanie Dugan (thealaskanyoung) I've decided to make my goal 50 books this year, and I really hope I make it or am able to increase it. I've already finished the Carrie Diaries and I'm starting either Water for Elephants or the Chaperone next, I can't decide!

message 15: by Bianca (new)

Bianca (theperksofbeingbianca) My goal for 2014 is 75. Last year was 50 but I had to change it to 70. Even though I didn't make it to 70, I want to really challenge myself this time.

message 16: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Banks | 21 comments My goal for 2014 is 100. Last year I only read 30 and that was horrible for me because I love reading…so this year I'm going for 100 and hopefully I can surpass it =)

Jamie | 1 comments My Goal for 2014 is 65 books, for 2013 my goal was 50 books and I just made it! I Love to read and am looking for different types of books to read!

The Flapper Series by Jillian Larkin was great!
Wonder by R. J. Palacio is a must read.
Burning Blue by Paul Griffin is a page-turning whodunit that you will not believe whodunit!

Those are just a few that I really liked this year. Hope you enjoy!

message 21: by Shannon (new)

Shannon | 3 comments My goal for this year is 75 but hoping I will get a chance to read more, as reading is my little escape, my me time snuggled up with a big cuppa! Ive also set my self a challenge that 20 of these books must be from different genres not romance!!!

Emily | 68 comments My goal is 50 this year! I read 37 in 3013.

message 24: by Kendra (new)

Kendra Mcglothin | 19 comments I'm trying for 80 this year. I'm sure they won't all be romance as I have a few westerns I still need to read to catch up from last year and a few mystery's have also been thrown in. Right now I'm sitting at 4/80 so I'm sure I can make it.

message 25: by Jenn (new)

Jenn Saam | 4 comments My goal is 55 this year. Last year I fell short but it was a busy year.

(shan) Littlebookcove (littlebookcove) My goal this year is to read 35 books. an easy target I know but one I can easily reach.

message 27: by Shana (new)

Shana Wolfe | 38 comments I am new to the group so my first reading goal is 24 books. That is two a month. For me that is a huge leap as I usually read more seasonally as time allows so now I am working on reading continually. I also plan on getting my own book to a publisher so this goal works within my writing goals. I just want to say I am awed by all of your goals. WOW! Definitely a group I will enjoy.

message 28: by Mugdha (new)

Mugdha (mugdha_manasa) | 4 comments I completed 200 books last year, and will be hoping to complete the same this year too! Am a serious book addict, and having e-books now has increased it even more! Now my reading doesn't have to eat into my knitting time, as I manage to combine the 2 with e-books! ;)

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I am going to start with 25 books this year. When I reach that goal, I will up it to 50, and so on. Any extra I do is just a higher goal for next year.

message 30: by Jacky (new)

Jacky | 97 comments I'm aiming for 70 again, just managed it last year with 71.

Me too! I felt like I've read more than ever before last year and when I count it up it's only 35. So this year it will be to read 40

message 39: by Tessa (new)

Tessa (saymadrid) | 12 comments 2014 challenge set at 60 books. Read a lot of Dahl and Vonnegut so I am hoping to finish all their books and start exploring the books of Gaiman and Murakami. A friend suggested that I pick up some sailing literature. any ideas?

message 40: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (missams) | 59 comments I am hoping to read 75, but my goal is to read 50. I am not sure with my hectic schedule if I can make it to 50.

message 41: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) My goal is 60 this year, down from 65 of last year. I did make it to 65 last year but I found it stressful near the end.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I aim to read 100 books this year. I have had a pretty good start, I hope to keep it going...

message 43: by Aiysic (new)

Aiysic | 22 comments My goal is to finish 50 books this year. Kind of small compared to the goals I've seen on this thread. I've never read 50 books in such a short time. Life often gets in the way. But maybe this year will be different. Hoping I reach my goal or exceed it! :)

message 44: by Karen (new)

Karen I decided on 135 books this year. I also have two sub-goals (is that a real term?). Firstly to participate more - post reviews, comment in discussions etc. Secondly of my 135 books I want to read 12 tech/professional, 12 spiritual/inspirational, and 12 other non-fiction. As for the rest, my go-to genres are sci-fanstasy and romance (especially when I need an easy, relaxing read) but I am open to anything well written so I just plan to be open-minded.

Favorite books/series of 2013 included:
The Rook by Daniel O'Malley (one of my favorite books EVER!)
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
Eleanor and Park & Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Old Man's War by John Scalzi

For 2014 I will definitely be looking out for more by each of those authors. I am waiting rather impatiently for more from Daniel O'Malley in particular! Also, will continue with the Kate Daniels Series by Ilona Andrews and On the Island Series by Terri Osborn. I'm really excited for some new (to me) authors and series though. Too many to list but I am moving the The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker and NOS4A2 by Joe Hill to the top.

message 45: by Karen (new)

Karen (karinlib) @Karen I loved The Rook as well, and I can't wait for the sequel.

message 46: by Rob (new)

Rob (in_the_stacks) I set my goal for 100, but I might be in over my head. 95 more to go

message 47: by Lisa Mccarty (new)

Lisa Mccarty | 8 comments I set my goal to 120. Only 113 to go lol.

message 48: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Davenport | 2 comments I will set my goal for 50, but I have no idea how many books I read in a year! We'll see!

message 49: by [deleted user] (new)

Last year, I started really reading halfway through the year so my goal was 31 and I read 49 books by the end of 2013. This year I decided to read 73 since I'm starting in January.

message 50: by DENISA (new)
