The Perks Of Being A Book Addict discussion
2014 Reading Challenge

Micaela -
I don't know what your taste in books is, but some of my favorite reads this past year were:
Me Before You - beautiful story about a person's right to be able to end their life - tear jerker.
The Storyteller - a holocaust story with a current day story line mixed in.
Graceling - YA. Sort of a medieval setting, but some characters are born with paranormal powers. Very interesting!
The Passage - Horror apocalyptic & post-apocalyptic with vampires.
Doctor Sleep - Stephen King, always a great storyteller. Definitely not his scariest book, but kept the pages turning.
Neverwhere - fantasy by Neil Gaiman. I'm not a huge Gaiman fan and I don't know if I'd say this was a favorite read of the year, but I really enjoyed it. There is a secret world below London.

Thank you so much for the recommendations! There were some books I've already planned to read this year, let's see if they are as good as you say. I have no doubts they will be awesome.
I hope you all get some lifetime to complete this challenge and find amazing books!

I would also recommend the Legend Series by Marie Lu and second the recommendation of Graceling by Kristin Cashore.
Other series of note:
The Selection by Kiera Cass (warning! last book not out yet)
Maze Runner by James Dashner
The Demon King by Cinda Chima Williams
Great stand-alones:
45 pounds, more or less by K.A. Barson
The Wolf of Wall Street by Jordan Belfort (technically this one does have a sequel)
The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown
Project Cain by Geoffry Girard
I have read one book out of my goal of 100 for 2014. The first book I read for the year was The One And Only Ivan. I gave it three stars.

I would also recommend the L..."
The Flapper Series by Jillian Larkin was great!
Wonder by R. J. Palacio is a must read.
Burning Blue by Paul Griffin is a page-turning whodunit that you will not believe whodunit!
Those are just a few that I really liked this year. Hope you enjoy!

I am going to start with 25 books this year. When I reach that goal, I will up it to 50, and so on. Any extra I do is just a higher goal for next year.

20 books this year, Oudia. Let's go!

Me too! I felt like I've read more than ever before last year and when I count it up it's only 35. So this year it will be to read 40

I aim to read 100 books this year. I have had a pretty good start, I hope to keep it going...

Favorite books/series of 2013 included:
The Rook by Daniel O'Malley (one of my favorite books EVER!)
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
Eleanor and Park & Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
Old Man's War by John Scalzi
For 2014 I will definitely be looking out for more by each of those authors. I am waiting rather impatiently for more from Daniel O'Malley in particular! Also, will continue with the Kate Daniels Series by Ilona Andrews and On the Island Series by Terri Osborn. I'm really excited for some new (to me) authors and series though. Too many to list but I am moving the The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker and NOS4A2 by Joe Hill to the top.
Last year, I started really reading halfway through the year so my goal was 31 and I read 49 books by the end of 2013. This year I decided to read 73 since I'm starting in January.

To all of my returning champs: congratulations.
To all of my contestants who didn't quite make it: kudos for being willing to try again.
To all of my newbies: let the fun begin.
It's the second day of a new year which means a new reading challenge. We all know that there are more books written than anyone could ever possibly read in a lifetime but we sure are willing to try! This year, whether you are maintaining your number of books or upping it or reducing it, I wish you all the best of luck in this endeavor.
This page will be used to track our progress as a group and to share any interesting finds that we come across. Don't be afraid to ask for encouragement or start a private conversation with someone about a book. This is a nonjudgemental place where we have gathered for a common purpose: to read as many books as possible.
I have just set my challenge to the lofty goal of 100 books for 2014.
What's your number?
