Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments And I think I'm losing it a bit. I was going through the group and wondering to myself, why is there so much activity in the April threads when April was over two weeks ago?

I had to click on the Little April Showers challenge and really look at it before realizing that, whoops, it's still April.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments And we're back!

How did everyone survive the massive Goodreads outage? I caught myself refreshing the page fairly constantly.

message 103: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (lmelliott) | 686 comments I didn't realize how dependent I was. I did the same thing!

message 104: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (nicehotcupoftea) | 169 comments I was lost! Withdrawal symptoms!

message 105: by Jaclyn (new)

Jaclyn Same thing..I didn't realize how often I check in and browse! I couldn't help refreshing about a thousand times!

message 106: by [deleted user] (new)

Ya I was having withdrawal too! I usually come home from work and update my goodreads page, I have been home for about four hours and have been checking pretty consistently hoping it would be back up!

message 107: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3888 comments I can't believe how long it took for Goodreads to fix the problem. I wonder what happened?

message 108: by Jaclyn (new)

Jaclyn I was starting to worry that it'd come back up and all our data would be gone!

Adriana | 3888 comments Jaclyn wrote: "I was starting to worry that it'd come back up and all our data would be gone!"

I had the same horrible thought.

message 110: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments I was having horrible withdrawal too! It seemed like every 5 minutes there was another reason I just had to look on goodreads for something. I didn't realise until now how addicted I really am.

message 111: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments Something else though. In the lack of goodreads yesterday I began exploring various book blogs and reading posts all over the internet and I came upon so many posts or comments that mentioned skimming. So many people said they skim parts of books for various reasons and I was so shocked. It's never occurred to me to skim any book other than a textbook. I read novels and other types of non-fiction from start to finish. I can't imagine skimming, but they actually had some good reasons for doing so. I'm just curious, does anyone here skim? Why or why not?

message 112: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments If I'm really disliking a book, I'll skim for a bit rather than just give up on it outright. Sometimes you're just in a boring or poorly written part that you need to push through, and skimming works well for that.

message 113: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree with Kara. I hate giving up on books, I have only ever done that once. I will usually end up skimming just to get through a book that I am really not enjoying.

message 114: by Adriana (new)

Adriana | 3888 comments I sometimes skim because I'm so excited to see what happens next. It's usually with a great mystery that I do that or I know sparks are going to fly with the love interests in a book so I rush to get to the next scene.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments Lucky me! For some reason, I was really tired last night and went to bed before 9pm. I missed the big outage, and GR was online when I got up at 6am.

message 116: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 910 comments Hmm, next time I'm reading a slow part of a book I might consider skimming then. Now that I know it's not cheating. It might save me some boredom. :)

message 117: by Megan (new)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Apparently the outage was the first day of my vacation, so I had no idea. Has Goodreads said what caused the problem?

message 118: by [deleted user] (new)

The sun is shining and I'm spending my day working in my friends used bookstore. Plus she is paying me in books! What more can a girl ask for?

message 119: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Kelsi, that sounds like a blissful afternoon.

I just got home from two weeks of business travel, so I'm catching up on the group today (after I slept for, like, 15 hours straight). Sorry I've been so absent! <3s all around.

Travelling can be exhausting, where did you go? Did you at least get to sightsee along with working?

Jaclyn, it was a pretty great day. She hasn't been open for too long (about six months) so it's still pretty quiet. But the customers I had were really great! So much fun to just talk about books all day :) I picked up some great books too:
A couple of agatha Christie collections, The White Queen, Firefly Lane, and Dead in the Family.

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments Kelsi wrote: "Travelling can be exhausting, where did you go? Did you at least get to sightsee along with working?"

I went to DC, Tahoe, Fort Lauderdale, Buffalo, and Toronto. Tahoe was a leisure trip, but the rest were for work. I didn't get to do much sightseeing, but in Fort Lauderdale, we got to go on an alligator tour as a team building activity. That was awesome. I would HIGHLY recommend it for anyone visiting the Everglades.

message 123: by [deleted user] (new)

That sounds really cool! I don't know if I will get to go there but I will keep it in mind if I do :)

Wow! You've been a busy girl! I'm not too sure about the alligator tour...yikes!

message 126: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha thank you Laura!

message 127: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments Alligators, wow! I'm SO grateful sometimes for living in a place where a modestly poisonous viper and some annoying wood ticks are the only real wildlife concerns. (And badgers - we used to be told horror stories about how they'd bite until they heard bone break, and the way to handle it was to stuff your boots with paper and coal. I suspect(!) this is the kind of funny thing adults tell kids which leaves some of us permanently scarred...)

Ugh - I just discovered a handful of titles from my to-read had been given a recent "date read" and screwed up my yearly challenge count. It must be the work of the kindle goodreads update (which I got a few days ago) - now I need to find out why/how it does it and make it stoooop. It can't possibly be meant to rabidly announce a book as read just because I've bought it, right?

message 128: by Robyn (new)

Robyn | -15 comments I have just purchased a kindle and am so excited! I know I'm always the last one to get on board with the technology but after lugging big book after big book around to the park and other outdoor activities I decided it was time to try out these ereaders. Plus amazon had an interest free payment plan so I figured I could splurge and get a kindle for less money monthly then I spend on my coffee : )

Congrats!! I never thought I'd be a kindle person, but once I gave in and bought one I immediately changed sides. I LOVE my kindle. It's so nice to have so many books in a small little device. Plus, I've come to love the dictionary feature as well. So easy to look up words! I hope you enjoy your purchase as much as I did! :)

message 130: by Robyn (new)

Robyn | -15 comments Thanks Jaclyn I hope I love it as much as you do. I am already looking forward to having such easy access to so many books and know it will come in handy during my upcoming vacations. No more bulky carry-ons full of books!

message 131: by Bev(baglady) (new)

Bev(baglady) (blbaglady) Congrats on your purchase Robyn. I always said I would not get one but when I got my sony for christmas a few years back I loved it and now I have a kindle that I couldn't live without. I still have my printed books but I usually only read them at home so I don't have to carry them. My kindle goes everywhere I go so I always have a book in my hand no matter where I am.

I'm not sure about the goodreads issue. I haven't had that problem with the kindle update. The problem I get with goodreads is that when I change a book from "to-read" to "currently reading" it automatically creates a duplicate. So I'll have the same book still in my "to-read" list. It's annoying to go back everytime and delete one. :-/

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments About to hit the road again! Kalamazoo -> Boston -> San Jose -> Vegas (for fun!) -> DC -> Kalamazoo

It's always hard to tell if these trips will mean more or less time on Goodreads, but odds are I'll be a little MIA for the next week.

message 138: by Liaden (new)

Liaden I have to say at this point I am a little disgusted, for the last week I have tried and failed to find a romance worth reading. Everything that I have picked up has either been so sickingly sweet that that I had to resist the urge to gag or so unbelievably vulgar that I cringed. I don't see why it is so difficult to find a balance. Frost had no problem creating it, it wasn't overly sweet or unbelievable. The romance progressed naturally and the end result was the dynamic of Cat and Bones. I don't understand why I can't find another like it. And frankly its really starting to tick me off. I want a slow build and actually chemistry without all the inner monologue if its written the right way I won't need page after page of love declarations it will simple jump off the page and play before my eyes. Why can't I find this? Do more of these books exist and if so where are they hiding?

Any help would be appreciated thanks

I'm a little late in a response here, but Liaden, I have the same problem. I'm sure there are great romance books out there, but I have trouble finding them as well. Any romance readers out there have suggestions for people who haven't historically had much luck with the genre?

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments I'm almost finished reading Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy, which I'm enjoying. I also have plans to read some of the books by the Danish Nobel Laureate Sigrid Undset.

Stefanie | 5 comments Very excited about The Book Of Life by Deb Harkness woke up extra early and bought it so excited to start it

message 142: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh it came out today? I may have to grab a copy myself that is exciting!

message 143: by Kara (new)

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I read A Discovery of Witches but haven't read anything else by Deborah Harkness. Looks like I should give her another shot.

Stefani - SpelingExpirt (speling_expirt) | 585 comments I recently tracked down a book I loved in High School, I think I was maybe 11 or 12 when I first read it. I could remember snippets of it but it took ages to find out what it actually was. It was one of the many books I got out of my school's library.

The book turned out to be Bloodtide so I downloaded and set out to reread it.

I was a really weird kid, the book is good but in a really crazy twisted way. Violent and sexual stuff happens in this book that you would never find in a YA book today (probably just in a GRR Martin book).

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Kindle users, has anyone tried the new Kindle Unlimited yet? Does it have a good range of titles? I'm trying to decide if it's worth it or not. Let me know your thoughts:)

message 146: by Karina (new)

Karina (karinargh) | 807 comments I wish I could try Kindle Unlimited - it's not likely to ever become available in my country, though. :p A little bit jealous!

message 147: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 18, 2014 12:59PM) (new)

Ya it isn't available here either it sucks! From what I have read though a lot of the selection is filler books that nobody has heard of so it may not be worth the money. But at the same time even if you get one book a month it pretty much pays for itself. Probably at least worth doing the thirty day trial to see how you like it.

message 148: by Jaclyn (new)

Jaclyn I haven't even heard of it...is it like Amazon Prime?

message 149: by [deleted user] (new)

It was just released. I think it's similar, for ten bucks a month you get unlimited ebooks and audiobooks from a certain collection. But they have taken some features away that you get with prime like the lending library.

Kelsi, what has been taken away from Prime? I checked my account, and the Kindle Lending Library feature is still there.
