Play Readopoly Challenge - #2

It was so much fun the first time, let’s play it again :-D Wintertime is reading time so let’s make a game of it! What's better is playing a game of "Readopoly", where reading your books earns you "book bucks" (or shortened to BB) to buy famous literary properties. Let’s see who earns the builds the best property portfolio by the end of February!

Thanks to Sue for creating the initial gameboard and idea and to Hasbro producers of Monopoly which was the inspiration for this challenge. Apologies for those not familiar with the original game.

You may start earning “book bucks” with any books started and completed between midnight on Jan 1, PST through 11:59pm Feb 28 PST (also known as GoodReads time). Your last roll must also be taken by 11:59pm on Feb 28th.

GENERAL RULES:
1) All books used for the challenge should be started on or after January 1st. You may join the challenge at any time.

2) Audiobooks and ebooks are accepted, but they must have a print copy with estimated number of pages. Re-reads are permitted for this challenge.

3) There is no genre requirement or minimum page requirements for this challenge with the following exceptions: Graphic novels must be at least 100 pages. If a book is tagged as as “middle grade”, “childrens”, “juvenile” or on the main page, then it must be at least 250 pages.
Bonus tasks may have some specific requirements related to genre, or page number.

4) ALL page counts, regardless of edition or version read, will be determined by the most popular edition of the book on Goodreads. The most popular edition is the one that shows up first when you search for the book.

5) When claiming a book, please link to the title of the book (not the cover) so that it can be verified. If you only link to the cover, it will not be counted. To link to a book, use the add book/author link just above the comment box and make sure that the book title button is selected. EXCEPTION for the cover bonus task listed below.

6) Bonus tasks validation: In order for the bonus task to be validated, the task requirement must obvious. If character driven, it must be a major character, if it’s genre, it’s only the books main page. Example, occupation in finance must be a major character that is multiple or scenes or pivotal to the plot. A good rule of thumb is that I can tell from the GoodReads description if this book meets the criteria. You can also point me to an external source.

7) You must be able to accept private messages from me in order to play. If your profile is private, then please friend me and say that you are playing “readopoly”. I will send any “issues” with your moves/scoring to you directly. If I need to send you 3 messages about the SAME issue, then I will stop scoring your posts. (Due to the nature of this game -- I have to be a bit stricter).

8) There are a lot of rules, but it's pretty easy once you get started. Have fun!!

READOPOLY GAME BOARD

1) Each person will be playing on their own game board. When you “buy” a space, think of it as developing a property. If you land on it again, you can collect the rent from your tenants.

You are NOT competing against others to buy the properties. However, there is a bit of friendly competition because we will be comparing bank balances and your property portfolio. Your property portfolio will be worth that amount that you collect in rent when you land on it (1/2 the purchase price, or if you own all colors, the sum of rents on all colors). Railroads and utilities will only be worth 50 BB a piece.

2) The Readopoly board consists of several different types of spaces which allow you to do earn, lose or spend book-bucks. Detailed explanations of the spaces are below. Purchase price is listed on those spaces that are for sale.

1) GO - Collect 200 BB each time you pass. If you land on GO, add 400 BB to your banked total.
2) Brown Filbert Street - 60 BB

8) Opportunity - “O” Bonus Task or Roll dice - Evens gain 50 BB, Odds lose 50 BB

PLAYING READOPOLY

1) Everyone starts on the go space. You will roll dice using the following URL: http://www.random.org/dice/?num=2
You may only roll once per day. You may sit on a space as long as you like. You can also use real dice --- we trust you :-D You can not take multiple turns if you miss a day.

2) You will move around the game-board based on your roll of the dice. When you hit space 40 (Piccadilly), you will continue counting your dice roll moving around to space 1 “GO”. When you pass “GO”, you collect 200 BB.

3) The following are the instructions for the spaces. When posting your turn, you will indicate the action that you chose based on the space that you land on. The actions are underlined in the instructions.

Properties: indicated by a colored square.
Buy: If you have enough book-bucks already in your bank account, you may purchase the property.
Collect Rent: If you own the property, you may collect the rent and deposit into your bank account.
Pass: If you do not want to do anything (saving your BB for a rainy day), you can just sit there for your turn.

Railroads & Utilities (Grouped together for simplicity)
Purchase: If you have enough book-bucks, you may purchase the railroad or utility.
Collect Rent: If you own the railroad or utility, you may collect 50 BB x (# of RR and # utilities owned). Example, you own 1 utility and 1 RR, when you land on one that you own, you would get 100 BB.
Pass: Do nothing. You do NOT have to purchase a property when you land on it.

Treasure Chest
Deposit: You roll the dice again (but do not move) and earn 10 times the dice roll as book bucks.
Example, you roll a 5 and 2, you get to deposit 70 BB in your account.

Opportunity
Bonus Task: You may complete one of the following bonus tasks (earn additional 100 BB):
O.1) Read a book set in Atlantic City.
O.2) Read a book with the word “Street” or a synonym in the title (e.g., road, drive, boulevard)
O.3) Read a book which prominently features a standard monopoly game token on the cover: wheelbarrow, thimble, man on horse, dog, race-car, battleship, cannon, iron, sack of money, shoe, thimble, top hat.
O.4) Read a book which features the name of a boardgame in the title. (Secret LIFE of Bees, The RISK Pool) [NOTE: if this is a more obscure boardgame, you must provide a “proof” link - BoardGameGeek.com is the preferred source)
O.5) Read a book set in the 1930’s; Monopoly was first published in 1935.
O.6) Read a book whose cover features one of the colors of the properties (more than 50% of the cover); the colors are brown, blue, green, red, orange, yellow, purple or light blue. NOTE: please link to cover on this one.
OR
Roll Dice: You roll the dice again, but do not move.
If the total of roll is even, you earn 50 BB.
If the total of the rol is odd, you lose 50 BB.

Taxes
Bonus Task: You may complete one of the following bonus task (earn additional 100 BB)
T.1) Read a HF book which where a main character’s profession features prominently in the story line.
T.2) Read a book with a genre of “business”, “finance” or “economics”
T.3) Read a book where one of the main characters is involved in real estate: realtor, developer, property owner who collects rent (not a plantation owner)
OR pay your taxes (indicated on the space).

Go to Jail and Jail
Visit: Landing on the Jail space is like a free space. You are just visiting.
If you land on the space “Go to Jail” then you must go to the jail space without collecting “Go” bonus
Bonus Task: To get out of jail, you must either complete one of the bonus tasks
J.1) Read a book featuring a genre of “crime” or “murder mystery”.
J.2) Read a book which has more than 500 pages (a lot of time in jail ;-)
OR
Roll Dice: Roll doubles. You will get out of jail on your fourth attempt at rolling doubles.

4) When you land on a space with a bonus book task, you need to select which task you are choosing. You may continue to roll the dice and move around the board, however, you may not deposit more book-bucks (score books) from books until you have completed the bonus task. However, you may collect collect “go”, treasure chest and rent.

5) Turn Posts - only once per day
NOTE: you can combine turn and deposit posts

Example 1: Start of the game
BB Open = 200 BB
Current Space: 1
You rolled 2 dice: 3, 6
New Space: Scotland Street
Action: Buy 120 BB
BB Close = 80 BB

Example 2: Later in the game

BOOK-BUCKS
1) The object of the game is to be the best book-ish real estate mogul. Your score will be determined by the amount of BB in your bank account AND the value of your personal propery (sum of all the rents). There will be many opportunities to earn bucks as you travel around the Readopoly board, but be warned, there are also opportunities to lose book-bucks as well. (NOTE: The symbol for a “book-buck” is BB)

2) The easiest way to earn book-bucks is to read books. For each book you read, you will be awarded. 1 BB = 1 page read. The book MUST BE COMPLETED before depositing the pages into your bank account. NOTE: see above for how page counts are determined. You may start depositing books after Jan 1 and deposit as many books as you’d like per day.

3) You may use your book-bucks to purchase properties as you move around the board. You must already have the book-bucks in your bank account prior to landing on the square.

4) Collecting Rents: If you already own a property, you can collect rent when you land on it. Rent will be ½ of the purchase price, so if you land on Sunset Boulevard (Price 100BB), the rent will be 50BB which can be added to your account. If you own all the properties of the same color, the rent will be the sum of all the rental income for the properties of that color. Using Sunset Blvd again, if you also own Peachtree and Mango Streets, the rental income will be 280BB.

5) Bonus book-bucks: you are responsible for indicating bonuses earned. You may earn mulitple bonuses per book (example, a HF bonus + Board Bonus for 1 book)
5a) HF bonus: When you read a work of historical fiction, you receive an additional 50 BB
Definition: HF is defined as a work published at least 50 years after at least half of the events in the work. All sub-genres will be accepted, but the setting must be recognizable as our world. Example, Napoleanic wars with dragons is fine, however, Game of Thrones (loosely based on 100 years war, is not).

5b) Board bonus: The properties are named after famous places in books. If you read one of these books, you will receive an additional 200 BB. Listing are here:
You can only claim each bonus for a space once and you can only read one book for each space. You can claim this bonus anytime --- you do not need to land on the spot to claim it.

5c) Bonus Tasks: If you chose to read the bonus task book, you will receive an additional 100 book-bucks. Bonus tasks are associated with Opportunity, Tax and Jail spaces. You can only do each bonus option ONCE.

6) Each participant will start the game with 200 book-bucks already in your bank account.

7) Making Deposits - you can combine with a “turn” post
Here is what your deposit posts should look like:
BB Open: 200
Becoming Marie Antoinette = 224 pages
HF bonus = 50
In the Woods = 429 pages

BB Close = 903

Tracking Scores

I will post scoreboards periodically, but I will try to validate every 3 days or so.

I have an excel spreadsheet from before --- I will try to see if I can transfer to Google Docs. It's nifty in that it tracks your points and also automatically creates your Deposit and Turn Posts.

JoLene, I don't remember how the rent works. Do we collect rent from other players landing on our owned properties? It seems like that would be hard to track. Or am I missing something?

Last time you collected rent for yourself if you landed on a property you already own. I believe this will work the same way.

"Collect Rent: If you own the property, you may collect the rent and deposit into your bank account."

Cheryl | 178 comments JoLene,
Looking forward to playing and reading with everyone else! I started the first book today and I rolled the dice already and got a 7. Are we doing the daily rolling now to advance around the board or are you wanting us to wait until you have the properties assigned with books and the spreadsheet available to us?

message 16: by JoLene, Mistress of the Challenge (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1251 comments Mod
Nope, you can start moving around the board. If you land on a property, you can buy it......I will just do the substitutions. The name of property doesnt doesn't really matter. I am just changing them so that people who played last time so that they have different books for the board bonus.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments You get one turn per day to roll the dice and move around the board. You read books to earn book bucks. One page=1 book buck so if you read a book that is 200pp that is 200 book bucks. You use book bucks to purchase properties.

Yep, you can either spend 100BB to buy Perdido Street (which means that you'd collect 50BB if you land on it your next trip around the board), or you can hold onto the 100BB and wait until tomorrow for your next roll.

@Anna, the book needs to be on GoodReads so that page count can be verified. (It's fine if it's the english translation). I cannot accept books where I can't validate the page count.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3120 comments I have a question, it says, if I am reading it right, that there will be need streets and books on January 6. What if we already purchased a property and it changes Jan 6.

I will just change the name based on location. The street names correspond to books. Since you get bonuses for reading the books associated with a property (whether you own it or not), I wanted to change them so that the people that played the first time had different choices.

Cindy | 167 comments I have a question about books read after Jan 1. I have put books into my currently reading shelf prior to actually reading them as well I have put some there and taken them out if say a library book becomes available and I want to get it read first. Is there a way to let you know that it was actually started by me after Jan first or is it too confusing and you want to stick to dates on our book links. I don't want to make it harder for your scoring it is already such a big job. Thanks in advance.

JoLene, question for you - There's no minimum page count requirement unless the book is children's/YA or a graphic novel, but what about independently published short stories, like Wolverton Station? It was recently released (I read it on my kindle app) and it's only 31 pages... Would I be able to deposit that?

If not, that's fine, just thought I'd ask.

Cindy, I'm going to jump in, re your question. If you navigate to the page for the particular book, you should see an area labeled 'My Review', following the general information for the book. Click on 'edit review'. Then, within the review dialog box, you should see 'Date I started this book'. (If you cannot see it right off, you may need to click on 'more options'.) Next to the year, month, and date number for 'Date I started this book' are arrows. Click on the appropriate arrow(s) to see a dropdown list, in order to edit that part of the date. In this way you can set the date to the actual date that you started the book, if, for whatever reason, the date that is already there is not accurate.

@ Becky, as long as there is a page number listed on GR, I will accept it.

@ Cindy, Sue said it better than I can :-)

@ Rhonda, @KristiJ, I am in the process of working on a new game board so that people who played the first time have different options. Unfortunately, I am hampered by Internet problems at home. I went to the library to work on it this afternoon and then GR went down.

I hope to be caught up on scoring AND the new game board this weekend.

KristiJ Jennings (kiki23stang) | 168 comments So we can just use the Game Board and "Literary PLaces" list from your Posts #5&6 from the Readopoly Nov 2012 challenge, correct? I clicked on the game board hyperlink and it brought up a new document (i.e. not the filled in one I used in 2012).

Yes, use post 5. I'm not sure what hyperlink you are clicking on :-(, but let me know so I can fix it.

Tracking Points

Here is a link to a google document spreadsheet to use for tracking points.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/c...

NOTE: the "drop-down" list boxes do not seem to work on either an ODS or excel. I put the choices in "note" in the cell. I can directly send you an excel file where all the functionality works. The instructions are the same (listed below)

You should be able to follow the link to open and then save a copy for yourself. (I’m not sure if works for people with gmail accounts). I also have an Excel version, so you can PM your email and I can send.

This spreadsheet has several sections:
1) The game board, listing which also lists the actions for each space. You can use the first column to indicate what space you are currently occupying.
Owned Properties: When you buy a property, you will put an “X” in column F to indicate that you bought it. The spreadsheet will automatically calculate the rent that you get and also change the action column to be collect rent.

2) Turn module starting on row 45.
This automates much of your turn and will also generate the HTML for your turn posts.
The cells that have a blue background are where you will input data. Here is the order of what you will do.
Step 1) Set-up: Update the current space (cell D48) to the number in New Space (cell D50). Reset cells C52 and C53 to “None”
Step 2) Roll: Input your dice roll into cells D49, E49
Step 3) Chose Action: Your new space is automatically calculated. If it is a property space, you will select an action from the drop-down list in cell C52, otherwise select an action from C53.
Properties: It will tell you if you can buy a property or collect rent and the amount
Other actions: If you chose bonus task, indicate which one in cell D53.. If it’s a space that you need to roll the dice again, then enter the roll in cells D53,E53
Step 4) Make Deposits: If you have read any books and want to add to your BB balance, you can type in up to 3 books in the rows 59-61. You can enter the book name, pages and then select from the drop-down list which bonuses, the book qualifies for. The total will be calculated. If you have passed Go or landed on Go, this bonus will show up on row 62.
Step 5) Post to Good Reads: Once your turn is complete, you can copy cells: I48-I57 to a post in Good Reads. If you have deposited any books, you will have to record those at the end of the entry by adding the link, pages and any bonuses. YOU MUST POST TO GR BEFORE YOU MOVE TO STEP 3. OTHERWISE YOUR TOTALS WILL BE OFF.
NOTE: There is a one turn lag for a property that you bought to show up in the property value.

3) Resetting after your turn.
Make sure that you have updated your GR posts before moving to this step.
3a) Recording your turns: You need to record any actions which add or subtract from your BB balance in the rows starting at row 66. This of this section as a check book register. The easiest way to record is to copy and paste from the “action” cells.
Property Actions: If you bought property or collected rent, copy cells C52:F52. You MUST use Paste as value from the edit menu. If you do not, then you will get invalid entries. If you paste again as values it will fix itself.
Other Actions: If you have done another action which changes your BB, you copy C53:F52. You should also record when you chose to do a bonus task as a reminder.
Deposits: You also copy the book section since this adds to BB balance by copying cells C59:F61. If you earned the Go bonus you should also include this.
NOTE: the formulas in the running total column (H) will subtract BB amount (colF) if the word in Action column C) is either Buy or Pay Taxes; otherwise it will add.
You may also add a date and enter the GR post which this turn was recorded.
3b) Recording Property Purchases If you bought property, you will go to the gameboard and record the purchase by placing an X in the Bought Column (F) in the property row. This will then change the action to Collect rent.

Melanie (ladybugh) | 123 comments Am I correct in assuming that we can only use fiction books as book deposits (e.g. no non-fiction)?

Thanks,

Melanie

Thanks KristiJ --- I thought I had removed that for Readopoly #2. I didn't update because people did not seem to be using it.

@Melanie, you can read any type of book unless there is a task requirement that calls for fiction.
