What to read?!?!?
I've only read A Wizard of Earthsea (first book in the cycle), but I enjoyed it and would recommend it. it had some bits that dragged on for me personally, but overall the plot was great. I'm currently reading the WOT series, but I'm only on book five. I would DEFIBITELY recommend the series thus far, and I hear mostly good things about it. I think the number of books can be a bit overwhelming (for me, I don't want to dedicate that much time to one series when I have SO MANY books I want to read!), but I've been alternating each WoT book with another standalone book on my list.
I also read The Rain Wilds Chronicles recently, and I really liked it, it has a different flavor to it than other high fantasy books. plus, it's all about dragons, my personal favorite ^.^
oh, and the mistborn trilogy, although I would consider it fantasy, but not high fantasy (not sure if you're looking for that specification, but yeah). (:
I quite like the Riyria series that begins with Theft of Swords. It's not quite as detailed as Rothfuss, but it's well-plotted.
His Dark Materials was a great trilogy by Phillip Pullman.I'm reading the Daylight War currently by Peter V Brett(from the painted man books).
There's also the Magician's trilogy (which only has 2 books out so far) by Lev Grossman.
I also really liked the DragonCrown War Cycle is also pretty good, by Michael A Stackpole.
The Soldier Son Trilogy by Robin Hobb was also quite good, though, for me, it took a little while to get into it.
Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastards series. From orphan thieves to con artists filled with humor, angst, sorrow and triumph.

Might want to wait before you read Brett. His last published book ends on a cliffhanger, and the next one is not yet in sight.

Mistborn Trilogy (not on your list)
The Dresden Files are pretty funny. They're comparatively light reading, but PR likes them, and I do, too. Good if you need something fun and quick to read.
And of course anything by Neil Gaiman. :)
First law series is one of the best I have read in a while. Can't go wrong with that choice.

I third that! Those books are REALLY good!
If you like the Dresden Files, you could also try the Iron Druid Chronicles. Parts are problematic for me, but overall a funny, and engaging series.

I'm about to start The Wheel of Time books. I've only heard good things about it aside from its length. I also really have enjoyed the Sword of Truth Series.

I also really have enjoyed the Sword of Truth Series."My personal Opinion on the WOT is it the Wheel of to much damn time, first 3 were great round about book 7-8 it started to feel like Jordan didn't know how to finish it and was milking the story for $, big giant books in which barely anything happened. I stopped and I haven't gone back to it. YMMV.
Felt the same about Sword of truth, read the first one
in one sitting on a 28 hour plane ride. Kind of got ridiculous as book count got into the high singles. I am not really sure where I stopped.
Dresden is OK but I think the Iron Druid Series is Better. Would love to see more of that.
Wizard of Earthsea is a classic, must read.

I stopped around book 5 because it got slow and havent gone back yet to reading it in about a year. I recently got the first 3 books of WOT though so I think I will read that soon. Would second a lot of these recommendations, especially:Mistborn Trilogy Boxed Set - Brandon Sanderson a great magic system, a trilogy where all three books have their own beginning, middle and end. I've read trilogies where the first book is basically all set up for the rest of the series, but not so with these. And some very interesting characters and plot twists.
Hounded - Kevin Hearne these books are just outright fun! lots of mythology and sword fights and ass kicking and snarky one liners. Plus the main character has conversations with his irish wolfhound who wants to be genghis khan.
The Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch can't go wrong with the gentleman bastards. great action, great dialogue, great characters. have enjoyed all three books in the series
Another I'd mention would be the Storm Front - Jim Butcher which Pat is a huge fan of
First Law was great, the other entries in that world are only OK.Mistborn was good but I preferred The Way of Kings also by Sanderson, the only problem there is Mistborn is pretty much a finished series and "The Stormlight Archives" are still being written.
The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks is one of my favorites. Again a nice magic system, good storytelling, and a very engaging read.
The Black Prism (Lightbringer Series) also by Brent Weeks.

If you are into Urban Fiction than the Dresden Files is spectacular (first few are decent but each one is better than the next, and there are ton of them.)
You should read Eragon. It has dragons magic and excellent story.

I like Robin Hobb but I'm not sure it is up to the others standards in many ways.

WoT although I would agree 8-10 are heavy going!Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive is stunning so far although in terms of length is by the end going to be WoT length and only on book 2 now.
The Mistborn trilogy is great Sanderson is brilliant with magic systems
Trudi Canavan's Kyralia series or The Age of Five both really good.
And if you want to read something Beautiful Neil Gaimans The Ocean at the End of the Lane blew me away!
Just read the first Mistborn. Stunning and genius book, I loved it from the start. Up there with NoTW.Almost.
It's the first book I read from Sanderson, I was amazed by the action scenes. Also, and more importantly, I really loved the protagonists.
My friend reeally loves Dresden Files, so I think I should mention that.
I found Gentlemen Bastards OKish... It has some relly good twists and charismatic characters but overall I didn't feel like continuing the series.

And now done the second and well into the third, I'm never going to claim these books are on a par with the greats but make me literally lol frequently. So good job Kevin Hern, if only I could write so well.

Eric, if you have not read The Broken Empire Series Books 1 and 2: Prince of Thorns, King of Thorns by Mark Lawrence I highly recommend the series.
Thanks for the tips! I just finished Gardens of the Moon and loved it. I read The Way of Kings, and was so amazed by it that I took a break from reading for a few days just to reflect on it. I have mistborn at my house and new to read it. Out if these next selections though, which would you suggest I read?The Lies of Locke Lamora

Ethan - Any of those books would be a good choice. The Farseer Trilogy is brilliant and so is the Broken Empire Trilogy - Personally though I'd suggest you grab that copy of Mistborn and dive in!
If you loved Way of Kings and haven't read mistborn then definitely that otherwise of that list the farseer books I loved em.
The Blade Itself is my favorite of that list, but really just get yourself a 4 sided die. You can't go wrong.
Thanks everyone! I believe I'll finish Deadhouse Gates and decide from there. I've enjoyed the little I've read of the Malazan series so far, but it's a huge series! I just got out of school since I'm only 13 so hopefully that will give me more time to read all the different books I want.
GETTING REALLY OLD WAITING ON HIS NEXT BOOK. ANY updates. He is not GRRM and i feel his mirroring the way ASOIF was done. When do this author realize they have a fan base who pays there checks….just release our books BOTH OF YOU!!!
Michael, I'm curious. Why do you feel like PR or GRRM have an obligation to put out books on your timeline? You might buy their books but that does not make you their employer. As a consumer, it is your prerogative to get bored with the wait and quit the series but you really don't have any right to tell them to work faster. Honestly, I'm glad Pat takes a lot of time with his books. It shows in the overall quality and all the little hidden bits that show up on the second or third or tenth read. Incidentally, I popped over to your page and couldn't help but notice that you finished ADWD five days ago. Um, if you want to continue that series, patience is your friend! :)
Completely agree. I'd rather they take their time and produce quality work than rush it and make crap. If you would like an author that writes quickly I suggest Brandon Sanderson. He has a number or epic fantasies out. Each better than the last and he works pretty quickly.
Ha Manda you can check my page but it is my 3rd re read of the DWD the series probably 5 or 6 times. started the series in 2000 so as a consumer who has waited 6 yrs between books and push backs bad release dates i do feel i have a right to my opinion. Read Sanderson's books and enjoy Mistborn series plus a slew of others by him. Don't tell me i can't voice my opinion above a author who has turned too tv and left his true fans flapping in the wind like he did for DWD. In case u didn't know the book has BEEN completed and now its just revisions and so on…… GRRM gets a pass but Pats doesn't. its been what 3 years since his last release??? he's working on Card games and Board games etc…. work on your book! Your right he can do it at his own pace and thats great but your right he might just lose me as a fan and that sucks. When i Pay for a book that money goes towards Pat. thru the publishing or not I'm paying into his job. Are you one of those people who thinks your congress man/women or any other politician doesn't Work for you? You finically support them with taxes….I support Authors by buying there Books/ wholesale at Borders every time….. you have a different view then me thats fine but do not tell me I can't Voice my opinion on a MESSAGE BOARD

You can't compare art and politics fairly. A politician can keep reacting to events and produce good work, even if he or she doesn't have the creativity to push through new ideas but an author is more likely to come out with a load of drivel in the same circumstances. I'd rather a book took years to create but was brilliant, than had an update every year but it was just OK. Plus PR seems to bring a lot of his life experience into his writing and even making board games could help him to better visualize his world. Obviously I'd love more than we're getting too but there are so many other brilliant authors out there also, so there's no need to get board in between. At least we have a couple of stories in the KKC universe coming up this year. Of course you have every right to your opinion but I think you'll be really missing out if you don't carry on with the series, which would be a shame.

hahah I guess i am. The thing is i rarely post anything and that post was just a venting point for frustration. Thats all…. and then the misunderstanding of how long I've waited patiently for GRRM books was incorrect. Been loyal Fan for 14 yrs…… But i do enjoy both authors immensely and got frustrated i apologize for snapping.
Hello, I'm looking for a new fantasy series I just finished The Bone Doll's Twin series which I absolutely fell in love with and then moved on to The Dragon's Path which completely bored me to tears so I'm not sure if I want to continue with the series or not. So any suggestions for a good fantasy series?
Have you triedSwordspoint and The Privilege of the Sword you'll probably either love them or hate them as they're pretty much Marmite. The Others is a really amazing series too Written in Red Murder of Crows. These are both quirky and original but quite dark fantasy series that are mostly going to appeal to women.
