Don't you have more info? Year read? Children's/young adult fiction or adult fiction?
Do you remember why the microchips were implanted? Were they to control them, to stimulate the pleasure centers, to help with health issues, to keep track of them?
The White Mountains for CLM's suggestion. If not that particular book, there are 2 more in the trilogy that could be the book you are looking for Bobby. (It's been way too long since I read them, so I don't remember if it's a microchip that changes everyone that is "transformed" by the Tripods.)

young man escapes from the city and rips the chip out from the back of his head?

Oliviasbooks--there are plenty of books that have been searched for by multiple people. Click on the group Bookshelf and you'll see the books that have been found so far. Well, some of the books--we haven't succeeded in getting all of them shelved yet. When you are in the bookshelf, type in the book name Invitation to the Game. And you'll see links to NINE threads, all different, but all about the same book. (I usually use this book as an example when people ask about multiply requested books, since it's been searched for so many times.)
If you follow some of the links (or even just reading the headings for the threads) you'll see that what is remembered is sometimes wildly different from poster to poster. Although some things remain pretty consistent, and again, you'll see that too.
(And yes, after shelving so many searches for it, I had to go and get a copy. It's a nice book for the YA set.)

Normally a poster doesn't know yet, that somebody else had been looking for her or his book in the past. Right?
Edit: I looked at the other thead. It seems that the poster of the comment Bobby is hinting at kind of 'hijacked' that request. So maybe the two unsolved threads do differ. Sorry.

Probably a long shot but in the last book of the shapeshifter series they all got implants put in the back of their heads, by Ali sparkes.
Ali Sparkes is the click for Tia's author suggestion. Since I'm not familiar with the author, I figured I'd just link her and let you check out the books yourself.
And Bobby--no, you did right. What Oliviabooks was suggesting is putting a hyperlink in to the other thread, IF you think that it is possible that it's your book. That way, people can see a different version of what is remembered.
