Ren I'm planning to read Skulduggery Pleasant for the bald, a friend recommended the books to me ages ago so it seems like the perfect time to check them out.

I could use some recs about books where a character has a drug problem though, I'm at a loss there.

If only the creator of the challenge would consider the books of the month, when he thinks of those villains...*mysteriously stroking my absent beard*

Thanks for the recs Lel :)

I read the first skulduggery pleasant book - it was pretty good! An easy read for the challenge too I reckon.

Yeah All over A Scanner Darkly for the drug problem! :D

And the funny thing is, I haven't even read our SF pick, yet.^^

I've ordered A Scanner Darkly, it's on its way to me =) Not sure if I'll be reading our fantasy pick this month, mostly because of everything else I want/need to read.

Ah, good point! I hadn't even considered it because I'm not a fan of Philip K. Dick. I might have found another book that fits the requirements in my stash of Agatha Christie books to read.

And now for some shameless self promotion thinly disguised as an attempt to help my fellow Avengers!

I have a story in a new superhero themed anthology, and it absolutely qualifies for the Captain America: Bucky requirement.

http://www.amazon.com/HeroNet-Files-B...

I'm very excited as this is hopefully the beginning of a new line I'm involved with, and those are my characters on the cover!

Ok, I'm done babbling, we now return to you to the Challenge Thread. Go Avengers!

Normally, I wouldn't let people promote their own books - but since you're such an active member of the group Wayland, I don't mind, as I know you didn't join just to promote ;)

However - is your story over 100 pages? As they need to be to qualify! :o

message 60: by Wayland, Ernest Scribbler (new)

Wayland Smith | 3547 comments Mod
The book is 250 pages total. I can't tell you the page length of my individual story because I actually don't have my copy yet, so I have no clue how it was formatted. But, it just says "side kick on the cover" which it is, so if you read all three stories, you're there, no?

I figured I might be treading the line on that one, but it fit so perfectly. ;)

I guess we'd have to check with our wonderful challenge moderator to see whether it would qualify =P Mpauli?

I'm still having a really hard time trying to find someone for Hercules 1: Well Muscled Protagonist. Everything that has someone well muscled on the front of it looks like it's going to be a romance novel with some paranormal/fantasy thrown in and that is definitely not my type of book. I need something with a character like Caramon from dragonlance, big and strong....

message 64: by Soila (last edited May 09, 2014 08:49AM) (new)

Soila | 135 comments How about Conan the Barbarian? :)

There seems to be a lot to choose from, by different authors: https://www.goodreads.com/series/5106...

There's also the Otherland series, set in a virtual world, the main guy is a muscled warrior type.

But then, why am I helping you?! And why are you helping him Soila?! He is the enemy!

Now I have plenty of ideas! Thanks.

I would have found something eventually or I would have powered through a crappy romance novel...

message 70: by Soila (new)

Soila | 135 comments I've now found a candidate for every other challenge but "a book by a german author or with a german main/side character". Any ideas (in scifi/fantasy)?

The Book Thief, although that's not SFF.

Ruby Red is by a German author, and is a fantasy novel. I've heard many good things about the series.

Inkheart and The Neverending Story could also fit.

The Dwarves

Just saw there's a thread set aside for this, so here's where I am so far. I'm probably going to juggle these around before I get done, as I'm essentially modelling the challenge around my reading and not vice versa. If anyone has any queries as to why I matched a specific book to a challenge, don't hesitate to ask! I'll be adding my other picks here as I go along.

P.S. I'm more an Avengers than X-Men fan, but I'm running the X-Men one because if I went with Avengers, I only need to read like 5 or 6 more books to finish it off :D

Cyclops
1. Honor Among Thieves
2. The Garden of Stones
3. The Crown of the Blood

Jean Grey
1. Sole Survivor
2. Royal Assassin
3. Knife of Dreams

Wolverine
1. The City and the City
2. The Very Best of Tad Williams
3. The Way of Kings

Storm
1. When Shadows Fall
2. Task Force Ombra: Grunt Life
3. City of Stairs

Nightcrawler
1. Siddhartha
2. Night Terrors
3. The Wolf: A Novel

Kitty Pryde
1.
2. Assassin's Quest
3. The Spook's Revenge

Angel
1. The Fell Sword
2. The Sign of the Raven
3. A Memory of Light

Emma Frost
1. Words of Radiance
2. Speaker for the Dead
3. Robot Uprisings

Colossus
1. Shanghai Sparrow
2. Empress of the Night
3. The City

Psylocke
1. Treasure Of Khan
2. The Last Viking
3. Graveyard of Memories

Cable
1. Behold the Man
2. Dead Man's Drive
3. The Blood of Alexander

Beast
1. Hawk Quest
2. Talus and the Frozen King
3. Perdido Street Station

---------------------------------------------
Loki
1. Hollow World
2. Prince of Fools
3. Dawn of Swords

Dr. Doom
1. The Time Ships
2. Tower Lord
3. Assassin's Apprentice

Galactus
1.
2. A New Dawn
3. Xenocide

I'm quite tempted to read The Way of Kings for Loki 2 (Wit = Jester) but that's a lot of book to finish in a month...
