I don't think you need to have read the books before to understand the prologue. What the Prologue is, is information you will need later in the book. Maybe if you tried to write down what happened in the Prologue it would make more sense?

A writing group I'm part of at my College likes to debate whether prologues are good writing devices or a crutch for those who do not know how to otherwise incorporate the information.

After a while it will make sense. Just keep reading. I'm doing well. I'm about 100 pages in I think.
