Nyssa | 2023 comments Chrome-cast is less expensive but requires you have an additional device (laptop, tablet, iPhone, etc.) Our kids use it all the time, especially if we're away from home.

The AppleTV, which I personally like and prefer, is a standalone device which has the major streaming aps like Netflix, etc . and it can mirror your Apple device screens.

We bought a Roku for my mom, but she didn't like the interface.

I have it on DVD. (I thought it was on Netflix, but couldn't find it. Luckily we recorded it a few years back.)

Felina I just started Sherlock. It's amazing.

With Benedict Cumberbatch? He is pure awesome!!

message 62: by Felina (last edited Dec 21, 2013 06:38PM) (new)

Felina Yes. It's great though I'm loving Martin Freeman too. He's cute. I don't find Cumberbatch attractive necessarily...I like the way he carries himself and of course his voice but Martin Freeman is more my type. A sweetheart.

message 63: by Felina (new)

Felina And I have a big thing for British guys.

message 64: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Cumberbatch just has... something about him. I love Sherlock. But I'm more of a Doctor Who fan. I'm also watching Merlin and Robin Hood on Netflix. I have a thing for British guys too. Obviously. Lol.

message 65: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Same here... I also really like British TV in general.

Huge Dr. Who fan..in fact all of us are.
Love Sherlock...and Cumberbatch, in general. Freeman does make an awesome Watson.
I cried at the end of Robin Hood.
I think I watched either just the first 2 seasons of Merlin, or some of the 3rd season as well...I'm not sure.

I loved the first season of Once Upon a Time. I feel like it's gone downhill ever since but I will watch as long as Robert Carlyle and Lana Parilla are part of it. They're both incredible. The S3 winter finale seemed to promise a return to interesting things, as well.

message 71: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I really liked the first season of OUAT, but gave up close to the end of the second.

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

The end of the second was definitely its lowest point. I had to grit my teeth and think of Robert Carlyle's wonderful scenery-chewing and pretty hair to get through all the (view spoiler) stuff.

message 73: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I love the flashback episodes of OUaT but I don't care much for the present day stuff. I keep watching it - a season behind on Netflix - but there's something that keeps it from becoming a favorite.

I do agree on Carlyle and Parilla though.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Watched the Doctor Who Christmas Special tonight (matt Smith's last episode). I think they've managed to explain how the series can go on even after the Doctor has had his 12 regenerations.

message 75: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I'm still getting caught up with the Matt Smith episodes but I'm surprised by how much he's grown on me. I'll be sorry to see him go.

I saw something funny online, that some "fans" think Smith was #3 and not #11. Made me laugh. ;)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Nienna wrote: "I saw something funny online, that some "fans" think Smith was #3 and not #11. Made me laugh. ;) "

Yeah, my sister said the other night that she really only liked the "first Doctor". I'm like, "technically you mean the ninth."

I watched the special last night, too. We usually go to the movies on Xmas night, but there was nothing out we wanted to see aside from the Hobbit, and we already have New Year's Eve plan to see that with the fam.

I thought it was an ok episode, overall. Not great, and it felt a bit rushed - but I did have some feels when (view spoiler). A decent cap to Smith's tenure, but not as awesome as, say, the 50th.

I'll be curious to see what Capaldi brings to it. I know nothing about him as an actor, except he, apparently, curses a lot in his own role.

message 77: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Colleen, I'm glad I wasn't the only one! After how great the 50th was, I expected a well written, touching send off. It was well acted, but the story was pretty weak. I wish Matt Smith could have had the send off he deserved! It wasn't bad, it just wasn't worthy of a finale. (Steps off soap box)

message 78: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I haven't watched it in awhile but I have been keeping up with reading about it. I think Smith should've had his farewell when Amy and Rory did. The three of them (and River) have such a strong connection to each other that I think the emotional impact would've been greater.

message 79: by Felina (new)

Felina Dr. Who is my nerd shame. I've only seen a few episodes.

I took my mom to see The Hobbit yesterday. I'd already seen it last weekend with the boy but I love those movies. Tonight I'm going to see Ronin and some number with the boy. I'm so excited! Me loves watching Asian mythology movies...no matter how inaccurate they are.

message 80: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I considered going to see the Ronin for our Xmas movie, but Jer wasn't interested. It was more out of lack of anything else than a real burning desire, though.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments ...nerd shame???? Be a proud NERD!!!!!

I thought the episode felt a little rushed to...but then since it covered something like 600+ years that is a little understandable. Doctor Who does that a lot. I'd like to have seen more about the siege. They gave us shots of the Doctor walking through conflagrations, explosions, fragments of battles and action shots to condense the story. They have always done the same with The Time War. I wish a good writer (that's A GOOD WRITER) would do some books on the details of the Time War and the Siege.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments She's not ashamed of being a nerd. She's ashamed that, as a nerd, she's only seen a few episodes of Doctor Who.

At least that's how I read it.

And, speaking of Doctor Who, I got this Tardis skirt and a bead for my charm bracelet for Xmas:

*Totally not me in the pic

(The bead is, sadly, silver, though it was supposed to be blue - but I think I'm gonna try to paint it.)

Ya know - Smith wasn't my favorite, but he did grow on me. I'm still a Tennant girl, though, and I cried like a baby for his regen and the whole farewell tour.

I know a lot of people who don't like his last episode, though. They found it to maudlin, I guess, and too cheesy, doing the whole "bring everyone back for the finale" thing.

But I think, really, it's more Moffat than Smith. I mean, Moffat has moments of brilliance, don't get me wrong, and he's written some awesome episodes... but I haven't liked the show as much under his reign.

***** SPOILERS, sort of *****

For one, I don't like the focus he puts on the companions. He's said in an interview that he purposely made it more about them, but I disagree with that direction. Even in this last episode I felt like Smith's parts were rushed, whereas the bits with Clara were more focused.

Then again, Moffat wrote Day of the Doctor, and I loved all the moments between the three in that one. (But I still thought the overall plot was kind of weak, tbh. It was their interactions which, for me, made that episode.)

And I was kind of blown away about the revelations of the cracks and the Silence, so...

I'm so ambivalent about Moffat.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I sorta knew neither of your fears would happen from interviews with Moffat. I was more just curious how they would do it. They pretty much handled it how I thought it would be handled, though the specifics were different from what I thought might happen.

message 87: by Ala (new)

Ala | 469 comments I'm glad they didn't do the Tennant style goodbye episode, it wouldn't have seemed right for Smith. Also, the switch to Doctor Fuckity-Bye Capaldi seemed hella quick.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments AMC is doing a marathon run of Breaking Bad this weekend. I'm recording the whole series, since I've been wanting to check it out and my internet is too slow to stream Netflix.

They're following that up with a marathon run of The Walking Dead (hint hint).
