Freya | 3 comments ~I think it was published in the late 90's to early 2000's.

~I am pretty sure its a young adult/children's book.

~I think it is a series of books.

~I think that the author might be a man.

~I know the main character is a young girl.

Some spoilers?

This girl is doing poorly in school because she can't control her magic (not sure if they call it that). Anyway they find her a new teacher and that teacher starts teaching her how things are made up. She spends some time in the book drawing a blade of grass in her work book and labeling the parts of the plant. Anyway the more she knows about how things are made up the better she does with her magic.

I will be every thankful for anyone who can help me, I have been hunting for this book for years now.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Freya, was this a contemporary setting? And, was it set on Earth or a mythical land?

Remember any other characters or fantasy-like elements?

Emily (emilisipher) | 21 comments Maybe one of the Circle of Magic books? https://www.goodreads.com/series/43551

Four characters (3 girls, 1 boy) have magic but it's unusual kinds of magic for their realm. They are taken to a sort of cottage for special mentoring to become mages. I'm thinking in particular of the character Tris, whose magic has to do with weather.

Freya | 3 comments Tab: I think its set in a mythical land. And I think a dragon came along later in the story. Also might have been set in a coastal village.

Emily: I owe all Circle of Magic books. I owe every Peirce book in fact. I also owe all of JK's books, Paolini's, and Coville's Unicorn Chronicles. And that is just the tip of the ice burg when it comes to my library.

Tria (trialia) | 30 comments Yeah, Emily, that description definitely doesn't fit the Circle of Magic series, though I can see why you might wonder if you don't remember them clearly.
