Misti (spookster5) | 549 comments Oh, definitely the Harry Potter universe and Discworld. I'd also say Sacoridia from Kristen Britain's Green Rider series. For a while, I was really into the Star Wars EU, until a certain lovable sidekick was bumped off. *Sniff*

Alex (eveningelevenses) | 27 comments Harry Potter (of course)
His Dark Materials (surprised no one has mentioned this one, this is possibly my favorite)
Star Wars (boring now, but back in my teens I was addicted)

to a lesser degree Old Man's War and Dresden Files

Ben (bennewton_1) Hogwarts, Middle-Earth, Westeros and Revelation Space for me. Plus an honourable mention to Bujold's Vorkosigan universe.

Excellent choices both! I really need to get caught up on Hodgell's books.

AndrewP (andrewca) | 2667 comments A couple of others that I found memorable, not yet mentioned:

Majipoor by Robert Silverberg
Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind
Otherland by Tad Williams (all the virtual worlds)
The Forgotten Realms - Ed Greenwood and others.
Megacity One - various

The one I would most want to live in - Bank's Culture universe, just as long as I was an actual culture citizen and not some other backward race :)

J.L. Burger (JLBurger) | 2 comments I find nothing more original than His Dark Materials. Pullman is a genius!

On the other hand, I'd have to go with Middle Earth, myself. I think Tolkien actually lived there, at least mentally. I can't imagine how he was able to do this and have a family with four kids. Actually, I can imagine how the kids might like that, but not his wife...

Someone posted Hyboria, that brings back memories of my youth!

In the end, of course, it always comes down to which books you liked the best -- so I'd also have to add Prydain and the settings for The Dark is Rising, two of my favorite series.

Matthew (masupert) | 0 comments Tamriel from Elder Scrolls is pretty incredible. The Books of Skyrim ebook had a lot of lore in it. I would also say the world of Malazan. I am not sure of the whole world is called that or not, but again the depth is incredible.
