A collection of best SciFi or Fantasy book lists for 2013

Adam Roberts of The Guardian gives his list of the Best science fiction books of 2013.

It seems a bit odd to see Doctor Sleep listed as science fiction. Speculative fiction, perhaps, and a great book, but science fiction seems like an odd classification for it.

I'd call it more fantasy than sci-fi. I consider it a paranormal thriller if I had to put an arbitrary label on it.

I also thought Joyland was a better (albeit shorter) novel from him this year though.

I think Roberts is very loose with his terminology and really should just use "speculative fiction" - although perhaps that's more the fault of the headline writer than Roberts himself. I guess many of the general readership wouldn't have a clue what Speculative Fiction is.

I agree...Doctor Sleep as science fiction? Not so much...

I feel like this list is for people who don't actually read science fiction.

How about The Long War(sequel to The Long Earth)?

I'm underwhelmed by this list.

I agree that they're not all science fiction.

I thought this was an interesting list partly because it was a bit different from the others I've seen. People have been complaining that the same books keep coming up in all the award lists and I saw some titles here that I hadn't seen before. I can't say I've read any of these - I don't really keep up with recent releases much. I thought it was worth sharing.

The Guardian forgot to give a nod to the death of Frederik Pohl around the time of the hugo awards, maybe he was not as a big of a figure in England than he was here in the United States.
