Melissa | 402 comments I am in such a high reading mode right now that I'm going to go for 100 books this year :) I did 100 in 2011 but failed to meet my 75 goal last year and changed it to 46 :( But I'm hoping to have it more together this year so might as well shoot for the stars ;P

Carol | 2 comments My goal is 150 books in 2014. Same as last year and I manged it so hopefully will do again.

Mary (Biblophile) | 386 comments I.m going to aim for 345. Only make 334 this year. Someday I'd love to read a book for every day. Usually get messed up while on vacation.

Erika (erilynnek) | 34 comments This is my first time attempting this challenge, and I'm afraid I might be aiming a little too high, but I'm going to try for 50.

I think you should count them. Some people are *only* reading "time wasters". I count every single book I read, even if it's for my 2-year old granddaughter. All books are worthwhile, that's what I think anyway!!

message 56: by Balquis (new)

Balquis | 69 comments I wanted to read 50 books in 2013 but only managed 30. I'm going to challenge myself to read 5 more in 2014. I'll also be travelling for most of 2014 so it will be interesting to see how I do! :)

Good luck to everyone! :D

Brian (brianfinn) | 638 comments I've decided to go for 75. VERY lofty goal for me as I am a rather slow reader, but with all of my challenges I've signed up for and the books I will have to read for school this year, I hope I can reach it.

Ann | 6 comments Hello, everyone! My goal for 2014 is 25 books, and will adjust if I see I'm moving quickly. I joined last year and set my goal at 52 books, but read several REALLY long books, so only made it to 24. I was reading all year, so I'm good with that, but I to reach my goal this year, reading whatever strikes my fancy! Good luck, All!

message 72: by Feliznavidad (new)

Feliznavidad | 5 comments My goal for the year is 30+1 with the one being the whole Bible. Oscar Nova study Bible on my mind me has a nice reading plan for each dat with links to the readings You don't go just in order but take some readings from various services tions. more diverse. John Adams read the Bible every year cover to cover. I bet Abigail did too. They were amazing people who accomplished so much. The Bible when read--not thumped has amazing power. I plan to develop a list of genres the other books will be to ensure my reading is challenging and productive. I'll post it hear in a day or two. Suggestions welcome!

We have the same goal! It's going to be a huge challenge for me too, but I think we can do it :)

message 76: by Ian (new)

Ian Hey I am a new member of the group. My goal this year is 24 books, so 1 book read every 2 weeks. Its the same goal as last year and I was spot on - But if I hadn't read War and Peace I would likely have been well over - Good luck with all your challenges! :)

Welcome to the group Ian! That is a great goal to do one every 2 weeks, it gives some leeway to read longer books. I'll be struggling to find really short page turners for a lot of mine.

I just saw you're reading The Secret History by Donna Tartt now - we read that a few months ago as a group read (October I think). How are you liking it so far? If there's a list of the most twisted and psychotic protagonists in fiction out there, I'd rank some of those characters pretty high up there!

Good luck with your goal and happy 2014!

I am loving it so far. Almost half way through. I love Henry. I also love the whole concept. Its quite different from anything I have read, and I really like stumbling upon something that is new and original for me.

Also after I finished war and Peace - which took me from 4th aug to the 8th dec - I had to read 4 relatively short books, 3 of which I anticipated to be easy going to reach my target!

Hiba Hussain (hibathebookaholic) | 12 comments Thanks Brian. Well yeah 100 books seem quite a lot. But I am such a bookaholic that hopefully I will achieve it. Plus I am totally enjoying this group. I wonder why I never joined one before on Goodreads.

Henry was my favorite character too - and Donna Tartt is such a gifted writer. I remember at the time I loved the book and then something changed like over halfway through and it started to really bother me like "Why do I hate everyone and why do they hate each other so much???!!" I was definitely the devil's advocate in our reading discussions lol but when I think back on it now, it was one of the most unique stories I've ever read and it definitely still resonates with me now. I might have to give her latest book published a couple months ago The Goldfinch a shot this year.

I have The Goldfinch on my to-read list. Not sure when I will get to it as I don't own it yet and I have a very large to read list considering I am quite a slow reader! But I have heard its good and I think it was pretty close to getting a goodreads choice award.

I'm a really slow reader because I get distracted so easily. Part of doing this is to actually help me work on that haha. Too many years of reading/working on the Internet and not reading enough books. And yeah I've read that the Goldfinch is amazing, just REALLY long, so I probably won't get to it for a while. I have an enormous pile of books that I set aside for some of yearly and quarterly challenges that I keep tripping over lol and I want to get through them first

I didn't realise it was quite that long! But if its as easy to read as The Secret History I'll give it a shot. I don't usually plan what I'm going to read.....but kind of rotate between Horror, classics, historical-fiction, contemporary and fantasy. Although I tend to bookshelf what I read as one of these categories when others might call it YA or Mystery. Lol. I also have a hardback sitting on my bookshelf that I need to make myself read. Its been there 2 years, but i'm dreading falling asleep reading and getting a smack in the face!

Kim Lobdell | 8 comments This is my first reading challenge - I am going for 50 books this year. I have also challeged my daughters to read 25 books each (they are 11).

Cannot wait to get started. My first book

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

message 91: by Brian (new)

Brian (brianfinn) | 638 comments Nice! I rotate between almost all of the same genres as you, though never really tried reading many Horror - I'll have to try out a couple good ones. I do read a bit of sci fi/dystopian, especially this past year, and have also enjoyed some memoirs oddly enough. But yeah, Fantasy, historical fiction, and contemporary are always gold. I like to approach "the Classics" with the lowest possible expectations because so many people are like "it's a classic so it's the best book everr because reasons."

Brave New World is one I read for the first time last year expecting greatness à la 1984 but really wasn't a huge fan. Rebecca is one I expected to find really boring and ended up loving it and immediately went to see the Hitchcock movie after finishing it - kind of a scary book in its own way.

I like YA and Mystery too and have no shame! My most recent YA book was The Maze Runner which I literally read in less than a day. For a book with kind of bad writing and little character development, it's a serious page turner based on the story itself, and I'm on the look out for the next 2 books to become available at my library.

Ian Brian wrote: "Nice! I rotate between almost all of the same genres as you, though never really tried reading many Horror - I'll have to try out a couple good ones. I do read a bit of sci fi/dystopian, especially..."

I read Rebecca last year and it was one of my top 5 reads, as was Wuthering Heights, but War and Peace just didn't do it for me. I have read some Dystopian - The only one that comes to mind is The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood by Margaret Atwood - But I have shelved it as a Classic.

I also read 1984, I liked it quite a bit, and the hardbook I have to read is 1Q84 (1Q84, #1-2) by Haruki Murakami - But I'm not sure they're too greatly linked!

message 93: by Brian (new)

Brian (brianfinn) | 638 comments Ohh I have to read a Margaret Atwood book this year that popped up for me in our Randomiser challenge - it might be that one or another one...I forget. She's written so many books, and I'm ashamed to admit I don't think I've read a single one of them.

Sorry to hear you committed to War and Peace and didn't end up loving it-I've kind of avoided it for superficial reasons like 'boring title' and 'too long'. I might get to it some day. And yeesh, IQ84?! That definitely looks daunting, good luck with that!

Welcome to your first reading challenge and to our group Kim and to your girls! Best of luck with your 50 book goal - and I think it's amazing that you're encouraging your daughters to participate - never too young to start reading. I would bet money that 25 books read in 1 year is more books than the average adult reads in 11 years!

I enjoyed the Handmaid's Tale quite a bit. But haven't read anything else by her. Also if you are considering horror, then I would recommend Under the Skin, it crosses genre boundries so it is horror/sci-fi and from what you've said i'd say you'd enjoy it.
