Yes, in a clash between Conway and Mrs S, I think I would ultimately back her to win. I fear Conway is too lazy and pleasure seeking and would tend to issue half-hearted ultimata then go off hunting leaving Charlotte to deal with the outfall. Could he, do you think , acquire the bottle to actually and finally forbid her the house forever......?

Is "The Nonesuch" one of those "abrupt endings", where it's like "oh! finally! I understand you perfectly! Kiss! Everyone's watching, stop! The End!"?

message 203: by Louise (last edited Sep 16, 2015 10:07PM) (new)

Louise Culmer I think The Nonesuch had a bit of a lame ending. I would have liked something more definite to happen to Tiffany, her really fall in love with someone perhaps, She was too one dimensional to be interesting. I mean, she's spoilt, arrogant, and expects to be the centre of attention all the time, but that's all there is to her, It woukd have been nice if her character had a bit more depth. i kept thinking that something was going to happen to show andifferent side to her, like I thought she might be the one to save the child instead of the other girl, or something anyway to show there was more to her.

No, it ends with Tiffany, the brat of the novel, leaving the scene, to the intense relief of all concerned! Louise says that she's a bit one dimensional, and that's true, but then all completely self-centered people are!

Elliot Jackson | 275 comments OK, this is going to sound completely irrational after my Lady Bab-bashing, but I kind of loved Tiffany as a character, so yeah...it would have been very fun to get some more resolution with her.

She's another one! So dumb you don't know whether to feel sorry for her- or run like your life's at stake when you see her coming.

Louise Culmer i think georgette Heyer should have made Tiffany a more interesting character, it would have improved the book.

Oh I think Tiffany WAS very interesting . An utter pain in the arse, but that was the point! Not sure why you think changing Tiffany would have improved the book ....but that is because I think it is a fine and amusing book anyway and Tiffany is one of GH's classic wonderful secondary characters that help make it so.

no, I think T iffany's character is one dimensional and not interesting. She is totally self centred and stupid. I don't find her wonderful. She never says or does anything interesting. I like it when the secondary female character shows she has more depth to her. Like Eustacie in The Talisman Ring or Amanda in Sprig Muslin.

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 1448 comments Louise wrote: "Barbara wrote: "Louise wrote: "i think georgette Heyer should have made Tiffany a more interesting character, it would have improved the book."

I agree with Louise. Tiffany's character was so one dimensional as to be beyond ridiculous and I think she detracted from the story rather than enhanced it. A little more nuanced characterisation would have been good. I love GH but I think at times she dialled up a stereotype and forgot to personalise or humanise it. There is no sign that Tiffany would ever learn, grow or develop an iota of self awareness and that is not only deeply boring but incredibly sad!

Barbara Hoyland (sema4dogz) | 449 comments Well, I think we can agree to disagree. I don't think she was, for instance, one dimensional or uninteresting . Of course I dislike her intensely , but that it not the same thing...
And I do think she showed some signs of character development or at least a little backbone , in the scene where she sees the engaged couple in the garden being given Patience's father's blessing.

Now Eustacie I DO find unintesting , though Amanda is a delight , I agree,

Tiffany's vanity and pride could be her saving grace. She couldn't bear the thought of being a figure of pity, so she was actually prompted to behave nicely. Maybe her temper tantrums would cease when she realized that not only was she losing her beauty with every one, but she was losing friends and conquests. Would her beauty ever be more than skin deep? Well, I doubt it, but maybe she would become a bit more tolerable.

Yes I think I agree that her pride and vanity might actually be her saving grace ( well the pride bit anyway )!
And maybe a older husband like the also awful Julia in A Civil Contract got, complete with adoring stepdaughters

Tiffany and Julia share the same innate temperament, I think, but Julia was luckier in her upbringing!

SamuraiKitty | 3 comments I would have loved for a sequel of the Corinthian! First of all to see how Pen's Aunt would have reacted to the knowledge that Pen was with Richard! Then Richards mother and sister's reaction to his having fallen in love! Also, to have read about Pen interacting in the Haute Ton while Richard kept her from adventure after adventure would, I think, have been pure reading entertainment!

I completely agree! They are unrecognisable, if it weren't for the names, you wouldn't know them. Whereas in Devil's Cub, I could easily guess the character's from These Old Shades, apart from the uncle (Sorry, I am forgetting his name).

message 221: by Moloch (new)

Moloch | 208 comments I can't really read any post in this thread (too many spoilers for unread books!), just wanted to say that I would love if a sequel to "Cotillion" existed! We never got to know Freddy's brother Charles, or Meg's husband, I should have liked to read more about Hugh, that seemed a nice guy, and Dolphinton and his (view spoiler), and of course Freddy and Kitty's married life! So many stories yet to be told!

I thought about looking for fan fiction (I guess there is some, there's fan fiction for everything), but I don't know, it's not the "real" thing, you know?

When I went to the Heyer conference last year the question did come up. Jennifer Kloester (GH's biographer) has said Heyer's heirs aren't interested, but have indicated that if they do go down that path they will choose an established author.

As far as authors go, giving Gideon (from The Foundling) is the one who excites the most interest.

Hi Moloch! The moderators try to keep the non spoiler threads in the Group Reads spoiler free, but you may find spoilers in threads in the other folders. The main reason for this is this group didn't have an active moderator for many years. :)

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 1448 comments Don’t like sequels or fan fiction - I have yet to read any that do justice to the original. I remember reading a piece of fan fiction that was posted on a GR thread about The Convenient Marriage where Horry, Rule and Lethbridge were in a “ménage a trois” and I have never been able to forget how awful it was! If GH had written any other sequels, I would have liked to revisit The Reluctant Widow.

I “attempted” to read a ff about Fanny and Oliver From Black Sheep and the writing was just appalling.

I haven’t tried to read any other GH ff since that experience.

The trouble with wanting Heyer sequels about the children of any of the Regency couples is that the Regency period is so short, even if you stretch it to the end of the reign of George IV. By the time the next generation is old enough to start getting into romantic tangles, they'll be halfway to being Victorians.

no, she remained single although she had a boyfriend or two. I didn't read the complete series, but really enjoyed a lot of it. The first one is "A is for Alibi" and so on through most of the alphabet. they are good, but she stays right in the 80s and technology never advances so she is very much an "old school" detective.

message 247: by Mary (new)

Mary | 58 comments This may be an old thread, but I have just stumbled upon what is an interesting topic. Having just finished False Colors I would nominate this book. There are two story lines in here which would make for delightful relationship discoveries. Twin #2 (respecting spoiler concerns ) and twins' mother.

Secondary characters, such as Cressy's father and his new wife, and Amabel's brother could add fun sidelines.
