I have a question for the other librarians here. I checked the librarian manual and it didn't really answer my question.
I am wondering why radically different books are lumped together as different editions of each other, such as: Cinderella and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Even though most (but not all) of the Cinderella books have Charles Perrault as one of the authors, they do not all have the same illustrator and publisher. The same holds true with the vast array of Snow White editions, all considered as one work here on GoodReads.
In a library catalog, these books would be on separate records, because they have different illustrators, different publishers, different pub. dates, different number of pages, etc.
The way Goodreads has these books lumped together as different editions of one another makes it incredibly difficult to find the exact book that one has read. The other drawback is that if one has read multiple Cinderella books with different illustrators, and lists them all in their booklists, they will show up as "duplicates" when one is checking for duplicates in their lists, even though they are not technically duplicates, because they are radically different books.
I would appreciate if anyone could give me a good explanation for this (in my opinion: deplorable) practice.

Tried to add it as a new edition (audiobook) but can't.

1. Cinderella & Snow White should not be combined unless they are BOTH in an edition which contains the two titles.
2. I think of this as an interpretation of FRBR, and whilst not perfect, it works for the average reader better than other iterations. :)

Thanks for your reply. I didn't mean that Cinderella and Snow White were lumped together. I meant that there were many radically different editions of Cinderella all lumped together, regardless of illustrator and publisher, etc.; and the same went for Snow White, and many other traditional folktales which come in a wide variety of editions.
Right now, Goodreads is telling me I have 3 sets of duplicates in my book lists, when the books they are showing only have the same title, but are not duplicates of each other (different illustrators, different publishers), because they are lumped together on one Goodreads record.
It's very annoying.

They are, however, the same entity - the Snow White or the Cinderella story. Folk tales are always a tricky area, because they have always varied from teller to teller, while remaining the same essential story. However, not a discussion for here. The basic thing here is that we all use Goodreads in different ways - for one person, having them all together is annoying, for another it is incredibly helpful to be able to see that there are other versions of the same work... :) Personally, I would just ignore the Duplicates, as I do when I own the same work in multiple formats.

Thanks for you input! It was very helpful in understanding the reasoning for combining differing editions this way.

Before Bethlehem
and the second one appears to be the Kindle version but needs the author name adjusted to fall under my author profile.

Are you sure that they are not Alternate cover editions?

Seems so. All of them have 2008 as the publication date. The reprint with a different cover already exists(https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...). There has been only one reprint by that publishers according to the details listed in that book.

This is the Kindle version: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
And this is the epub/ebook version: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
There is a slight difference in the cover art, but I've seen books with far more dramatic differences...not really sure if the proper term is Merged or Combined, but whatever makes the most sense for this situation.
Also if someone could update the Kindle version to say "Kindle"
Much thanks.

Labeled the Kindle edition. Someone had already combined the editions.

I am a librarian so info on how I could have resolved myself in message would be nice.
Kindle version with AISN/Less reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Kindle Version w/o AISN and rejects adding as 'duplicate': https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

in this case the ASIN-less one had more than 5 shelved so a super-librarian would have to do delete it, which i have done
45, done
