Harley_Girl_13 Seriously, it wasn't good yet almost 2 years later people are still obsessed with it. There are so many other books out there that are so much better than this series! I am asking everyone to please broaden their horizons and move on already.

Regil Aput I agree with you

message 3: by jev (new) - rated it 4 stars

jev I don't think it's going away anytime soon. Especially now that movies are being made. I for 1 liked the first book in this series. But what kills me most is that people act like these kinda books are something new. When I've been reading them for 20+ years.

Joanne I agree, this whole issue of the book and the casting has been done to death. A terrible book will be made into an undoubtedly terrible movie, end of story, so what.

Mochaspresso When the movie is finally released....then a smaller surge when it goes to DVD...and then maybe another little surge when it airs on cable.

Candy Sparks I can't wait for this hype to be over.

David Chambelrin The only reason people are still talking bout it is becasue they read it, was that ohhh its erotic woah i wonder if they will make a movie and when they release the movie they will be like oh lets go watch it and then after they watch it they will say i cant believe i ever liked that book

Michael I doubt the hype will die down anytime soon. Especially since there is going to be a movie soon.

Hmm kind of contradictory that you all wish people will quit talking about it, yet here you all are... talking about it!

Sorry, but I agree with Martine - and I loved the whole series. And can't wait for the movie. Just being honest :)

Jacquelyn I didn't see this discussion for several, and I mean several days until this post. :3 So.... who is obsessed?

Amber JD wrote: "Martine wrote: "Trish wrote: "Seriously, it wasn't good yet almost 2 years later people are still obsessed with it. There are so many other books out there that are so much better than this series..."

Agreed! 100%

If you are tired of hearing about the book, and start a discussion on that book, you are contributing to the hype and talk of the Book you are sick of hearing about.

Megan People were obsessed about Harry Potter and how often do you even see Daniel Radcliffe on E! now? It'll pass. The only place I really hear about FSOG is on Goodreads. After the final movie installment everyone will forget. Hell, people talked about The Great Gatsby like it came out last week when they remade the movie. Some people just love pop culture, welcome to the world.

Tamara Megan wrote: "People were obsessed about Harry Potter and how often do you even see Daniel Radcliffe on E! now? It'll pass. The only place I really hear about FSOG is on Goodreads. After the final movie installm..."

Yes but the difference is; those books were something special and this one isnt. I mean seriously if I made a 'books that doesn't deserve the hype' list this would be my top choice. Some people are really blind-sided about this book, like calling it a great romance, or Christian the greatest boyfriend

Martine Well, I think it's a huge statement to say that FOSG was not special. To a lot of people, it obviously was... and here you all are, still talking about it. Love it or hate it... as long as you keep talking about it (like Miley Cyrus!! lol) That IS hype.

Erin Trish wrote: "Seriously, it wasn't good yet almost 2 years later people are still obsessed with it. There are so many other books out there that are so much better than this series! I am asking everyone to plea..." Trish, with all due respect, you need to understand something: your asking people to stop talking about the novels does not mean anything to anyone except you. You're defeating your own cause by asking others to stop talking about the novels, it's reverse psychology 101. The fact is that these novels (however poor they may be) caused a stir in the literary world and that's why they're so discussed, especially with plans for a movie looming. I think it's going to be quite a while before people stop talking about them because there is so much in terms of character development (or lack thereof) to be discovered in these books among other topics, and as some other posters have mentioned, the talk of movies increases that.

Benjamin Stahl Get used to it mate. Word is she's writing another.

Mayank Kashyap If you don't want to talk about the book then why have you created this forum. :P

I think I'm gonna do the say same . 'Cause as much as I liked the book , the hype is sorta making me hate it

message 23: by Dan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Dan Arrow I believe it opens up the opportunity for two things. Creates a forum for darker depictions of LOVE to feed an obviously hungry audience, and or, compliment opposite stories leaning even deeper toward a metaphysical end for those who appreciate a traditional love story. Let it do what it does, and try to understand its phenomenon. I read the first book for market research and have a choice whether to see the movie or buy into any other aspect of it. If it offends you, simply don't put your money out there. That will send a clear message if it flops at the box office!

as a person who has read and actually quite liked the books
i couldn't agree more
plenty more books (bdsm and erotica) have been out in the 2 years and people are still talking/slagging this trilogy off
i have never known a book to cause so much drama
it's just a book
if u like it great
if u hate it great
now lets just move on

Ashley People will stop talking about this book at the same time people stop talking about Miley Cyrus or the Jersey Shore cast. Which is never, when people keep glorifying idiotic books and people.

~*~Princess Nya Vasiliev~*~ I imagine people will stop talkin about this book/trilogy when people stop makin discussion threads about this book/trilogy, & if/when the movie bombs.

Ashley Says the person who rated it 5 stars. So freaking idiotic, grow up and actually understand what you read. Complete and utter garbage.

You seriously need to consider your own statement & grow up yourself. There's no cause for what you just typed. Step out of your own Idiotic closed minded world.

Recognize that people can read this book, like it for what it is but still not wish for a movie to come from it. Just cos I like a book doesn't mean I'm gonna love to see or hold my breath for a movie to be born from it. And just cos you dislike it, doesn't mean I'm gonna purposely be insulting to you because of it.

But back to the original statement/question, people will stop discussing it, when people stop B*tchin about it.

Marianne You want me to recommend a fantastic book, you have to read the series of Gabriel's Inferno (Gabriel's Inferno, #1) by Sylvain Reynard & Gabriel's Rapture Gabriel's Rapture (Gabriel's Inferno, #2) by Sylvain Reynard & just finished today, outstanding final Gabriel's Redemption Gabriel's Redemption (Gabriel's Inferno, #3) by Sylvain Reynard so good, I wish a movie was made out of it!!!

Dan Arrow I stopped in a Starbucks and had my book (So...What About Love?) out on the table in front of me. A gal comes by and dials in on the cover and asks, "Is that as sexy as Fifty Shades of Grey?" I held my tongue for a moment and answered, "Yes, in fact it goes beyond the physical!" She took the book from me. She deducted that I had read 50 shades and couldn't wait to get into my book. Women are amazing and have a hunger for a good love story. Some will even settle for a not so good story, but that only leaves room for a great love story to come along. So, we'll just settle for dicing up the ones we have until it comes along.

Noëlle Alexandria I live in Vancouver, Washington, where Ana ostensibly lived. Those books are a joke around here, and the pictures from the sets that are supposed to be Portland look nothing like Portland. I've got friends who live in downtown Portland. I volunteer there and am there several times a week. The books were poorly written and are nothing but glorified abuse and rape calling itself BDSM, and the movies are going to be jokes. I wonder how they're going to get away with using the names of the Heathman Hotel or OHSU. I know for fact OHSU is pissed about how they were portrayed violating HIPAA laws left and right (I'm somewhat of a regular through the ER since my health sucks). I know the manager of the Heathman wasn't happy with the hotel's portrayal in the books. None of the real locations in these books have happy people.

The movies are being shot in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, because they couldn't get permission from the local places to shoot here. There's nada of a chance that trademarked aspects of the real locations will be in the movies.

I encourage you to read this peer-reviewed-and-approved university study on the books and the level of abuse in these books: http://online.liebertpub.com/doi/pdfp... I bought permanent access to the file. Those of you who are fans must understand that your ideal man, Christian Grey, is a certifiable abuser and rapist, Ana is a classic victim of Stockholm Syndrome, and *almost* every interaction they have has elements of abuse, whether it's him ignoring her saying NO, she does NOT want sex, and him forcing it, or him controlling her in ways she doesn't want but that she eventually caves to because she's afraid of hurting him because he'll hurt her (coercion).

I've seen a lot of mixed reviews regarding this trilogy. Especially concerning the last book. A lot of people who loved books 1&2, were highly disappointed with the final book. I'm still thinking about reading it though.

The book is garbage because it is unrelatable. Even true people who follow BDSM say that this book is garbage because it doesn't follow a true BDSM relationship. If you're going to write a book and write it properly and do your research.

And that's the only comeback you're working with? COS you know you're in the wrong with your silly ass attitude, little girl.

I so agree with you. I don't like this book either but I'm not going to bash people for liking it because everyone has different tastes. Come on people, it's so stupid to waste our time fighting over a craze that will die down eventually. And than when you look back at it and think, why did I did get so heated and temperamental for?

deedee megadoodoo People will stop talking about this book when people stop making discussions about it.

I honestly don't think this book was bad. It's not my preference but there wasn't anything that horribly grotesque and just downright horrible about it.

It's a book intended for a mature audience with acquired taste that people have to respect or at least tolerate in the same way that someone else may like country music or Korean pop music when you don't.

And with that said-- I don't understand the hype about this book either. Beyond the fact that this book played a key role in the reader community's genre shift into BDSM relationships/Contemporary Romance, there was nothing obviously special about this book. Not much stood out. There's the same main character who's going through the same themes as TWENTY THOUSAND OTHER MAIN CHARACTERS; discovering one-self, falling in love, overcoming fears. And just as the love interest is the same tall, strong, rich, and handsome-as-fuck guy, the love-triangle is the same extraneous aspect added in as some form of entertainment- like almost every other romance novel out there.

Fifty Shades of Grey is just any other book, and yet its fame rides on the back of the popularity and criticism it's so far received.

If everybody just chills out and picks up another book to talk about- then this series will eventually and inevitably die down and be taken off the "best sellers" shelves and be crammed in next to all the other Romance novels out there.

I'm sorry. Honestly, I'm really not this bitchy >.< I just feel opinionated as everyone here does, pertaining to this series.

Cassandra Shepherd Wow, that escalated quickly.

Natasha When the movie is out and tanked:P

Mochaspresso There is too much hype. Even if it's bad, I don't think that movie is going to tank. First, they are making it on the cheap. The only way that it won't make money is if no one goes to see it....which we all know is not going to happen. It's going to do exactly as the books have done. Generate enough buzz, controversy and debate that will be more than enough to carry it.

Amanda jev wrote: "I don't think it's going away anytime soon. Especially now that movies are being made. I for 1 liked the first book in this series. But what kills me most is that people act like these kinda books ..."

YES!! Exactly!

Elina And what's about that kind of speech... Holy cow and holy crap? She has a passion for British literature and yet she speaks as a teenager?

message 48: by Tina (new) - rated it 2 stars

Tina J I bought the box set based on the hype.

I was truly disappointed with the writing style. It was dry, emotionless, and a bit parochial to me. The dialogue just did not flow smoothly and naturally. The "taboo" was TAME in comparison to many other authors I've read. Overall, I was rather disappointed by the trilogy but read them through for two reasons: 1) I cannot justify wasting my money. I bought them, I'd best read them. 2) I hoped they would get better.

Now, I admit, book 3 was easier to read for me. I don't know if she improved or if I just got used to her writing style. I still was not impressed with the sex bits though.

So, while I am not a fan of the series or author, I do find all the continued hype that surrounds it to be amusing. It's like Twilight-esque crack for adults.

In answer to the question: never. Ms James will get her first two books onto the big screen & milk it for more by dividing the last book into two movies (as per the trend). Later, she may even release a 3D version! (*rolling eyes at sarcasm here*) The readers, critics & eventually viewers will ultimately have that love it or hate it finality about this series and that always makes for a hot topic and passionate debate.

Jennifer Lynn I did not love or hate the book because it really is like almost any other storyline in romance books. I did not find it as erotic as they seemed to make it out to be and made me question what people started reading it to cause this mass addiction. I've read books a lot more graphic than Fifty Shades and actually thought it was quite tame. I will admit I had fun telling people if they thought that was bad read so-and-so book. Honestly, if a erotic trilogy was going to cause this much excitement I figured it would be The Sleeping Beauty series by Ann Rice. Those were books to gasp and whisper about.
On that note, I am intrigued in watching the movie. I won't go to theater or anything for it, but I do want to see how they adapt it into screen and also whether they will tone it down or up. Movies always seem to take a book and modify it to fit what they think people want to see. I do not think the movie will be great but I do think that the hype will cause it not to bomb out.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't think that people are closed minded because they don't like the book or the movie, perhaps it's because they are more mature adults and the material in the book is nothing new to them. The young find it fascinating because it has been romanticized in the movie and the book.
