Have you read Wuthering Heights before Jenny?

message 6: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I have! But it's been ages ago, so I thought I would re-read or potentially re-listen the book to see what sparked the controversial discussion here ;)

I am really looking forward to the discussion. It caused a lively debate when we were discussing it in my Victorian Literature class last year.

Leslie | 16369 comments Heather wrote: "I also need to read The Importance of Being Earnest as our group play which I believe ends in November?"

No, the group read for the play run until just before Christmas - Dec. 21st - so plenty of time for that.

Laura - I had never heard of him either pre-GoodReads. I borrowed The Midwich Cuckoos because it is on the Guardian list and it seemed from the blurb to be a bit spooky so I thought it might be a good Halloween book. I think Wyndham is popular in England more than America...

message 23: by LauraT (new)

LauraT (laurata) | 14372 comments Mod
I'll sign him down!

message 24: by Pink (new)

Pink I agree john wyndham is probably more well known in England. I hadn't heard of this book until quite recently, though I'd heard of a couple of his others, such as The day of the triffids- my mum often tells me that my garden looks like a scene from it, with plants taking over the world!

message 25: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments The Day of the Triffids is also on the Guardian list & I almost borrowed that one instead. Did you like it?

message 26: by Gill (new)

Gill | 5719 comments Midwich Cuckoos was filmed as Village of the Damned, maybe you have heard of that one.

message 27: by Pink (new)

Pink I didn't know that Gill, perhaps I'll seek the film out afterwards!

Leslie I haven't read that either, just know the basic premise, its another one on the TBR though :)

I've read quite a few of John Wyndham's books, including The Midwich Cuckoos. Really enjoyed them as a teenager, and loved The Day of the Triffids.

Leslie | 16369 comments Gill wrote: "Midwich Cuckoos was filmed as Village of the Damned, maybe you have heard of that one."

I think that is why it seemed like a good Halloween book! I have seen about 10 minutes of the film before I got spooked (I don't generally watch scary movies, especially if I am alone!).

message 31: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments I'll be reading...

Beloved
Into the Darkest Corner (for my book club)
Their Eyes Were Watching God(readalong with Leslie)

I loved Death of a Salesman, I studied it a few years ago but for the life of me I can't remember the other play we also studied. I think it shows how much that Miller's play had an effect on me, haha.

Tracey (traceypb) | 1193 comments Wuthering Heights for sure and maybe a Virginia Woolfe thats if Rebecca is ever finished.

message 39: by Holly (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) Are you struggling with Rebecca then?

message 40: by Holly (last edited Oct 28, 2013 03:33AM) (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) My planned November reading, I probably wont get through them all. I deviate from my planned reading too much!

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
1984 by George Orwell (re-read)
Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood
The Prose Edda by Snorri Sturluson
The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales by Brothers Grimm
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller (I'm really not sure about this one...)
Selected Poems by T.S. Eliot (I really need to read more poetry...)

message 41: by Alannah (new)

Alannah Clarke (alannahclarke) | 14738 comments Mod
I loved 1984, I thought it was amazing. Loads of people thought I was a bit weird though for loving it because it's really dark.

message 42: by Holly (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) I really enjoyed it, but I really tailed off it at the end (not due to the book, school work etc), so I never felt like I really finished it. Hence the re-read!

message 43: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (traceypb) | 1193 comments Holly am struggling in general. Lots of other stuff going on. The short stories and poems I am reading are just about enough for me at the minute.
