I have that one on my TBR pile, Donna. The sequel is to be released shortly, I hear.

Sakura, I read Nothing to Lose after being a long-time fan of Lee Child. Unfortunately it was the only book of his that I just couldn't finish. You can read my review if you want. I just mention it in case this is your first taste of Child's writing -- don't judge the series on this one book. I was very disappointed, but had enough faith in Child to buy his latest, Gone Tomorrow. I haven't read it yet, but I hear good things.

Michael Turashoff (superdaddy) | 56 comments Right now I am reading "A Pocket Full of Rye" by Agatha Christie I figured I would read all of her books in order I have read quite a few of them when I was a teenager but I wanted to read the rest of them so I printed up a dated list and plan to read them all in order This one is out of seq because a couple years back I started buying a set of her books in a special edition which I plan on continuing but at the time had to buy a couple of strays. Anyhoo I'm finding this one very good so far of course I think I know whodunnit but I'm sure I'll be surprised at the end as I have with many of her books. I'm just finding that the newer authors and latest books are leaving me a bit bland and unimpressed so I figured I'd go back to the classics I suppose it takes a lot to entertain me lol. I'm still looking for a book along the lines of "The Da Vinci Code" or "Angels and Demons" which I found wonderfully entertaining Da Vinci Code being the best. If anyone has any suggestions since you now know my preferance of book especially ones that have major twists and turns throughout I'd really love to hear from you.
Enjoy the Adventure All

Dorie (dorieann) | 464 comments Tonight I'm starting The Lock Artist: A Novel by Steve Hamilton.

message 1005: by Mythreyi (new)

Mythreyi Just finished The City & The City

A great premise but felt letdown by the conclusion on the whole.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 556 comments Reading The Manual of Detection, which I guess is a mystery novel, but a weird one.

Jan C (woeisme) | 39173 comments I picked Manual up recently. Haven't started it yet though.

I'm busy right now with Louise Penny's The Cruellest Month.

Let me know what you think of it Susanna, because it's on my 'maybe' list.

Laura Just started "Tell No One" by Harlan Coben. It drew me in right off the bat.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 556 comments I thought it was weird but good. Reminded me of the Thursday Next books.

I'm with you on Jasper Fforde; his books are really original. I recently finished The Fourth Bear

message 1013: by Luci (new)

Luci | 4 comments I love Jasper Fforde, but I've gotten behind. Last I read was "Something Rotten". I have "The Fourth Bear" but haven't read it yet.

I'm reading "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". So far, so good, but it hasn't grabbed me yet. I'm having no trouble putting it down and reading something else.

Currently, I'm reading book 9 of The Wheel of Time series, "Winter's Heart"; I've been in a fantasy frame of mind.

message 1014: by Luci (new)

Luci | 4 comments Michael, I found Steve Berry's books to be in the same spirit as "The DaVinci Code" and "Angels and Demons" but I enjoyed them better.

"The Templar Legacy" is the first in a series but many of his are stand-alone.

"The Amber Room" was his first novel and was thoroughly enjoyable, but the others are better.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 556 comments Currently reading two historical mysteries: Lion in the Valley, an Amelia Peabody mystery, and Lustrum, by Robert Harris (low on 'mystery,' high on political intrigue).

message 1016: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 464 comments I'm now starting The Crossing Places, the first book in a planned series. The main character is a forensic archeologist who teams up with a police detective to solve a murder. I like that the main female character isn't perfect - she's forty, overweight and single.

Movie came out in 2006, Perfume:The Story of a Murderer. Has Dustin Hoffman, Alan Rickman and Ben Whishaw in it.

Esther (eshchory) | 218 comments I'm reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. So many people said it had a slow start but once I sat down and read a few dozen pages I was in.
Today I seriously considered skipping work just so I could carry on reading.

I finished the book and I kind of hated it. I wouldn't advise someone else not to read it, because tastes are so individual, but I couldn't wait for it to end. Found it gross and depraved. I really have no desire to see the movie, but I can't say I won't.

Lobstergirl Reading The Dying Animal by Philip Roth.

message 1028: by Chris (new)

Chris (cdsmith15) Hi Sandra, I actually read Tripwire first before my pal told me it was a series and I should go back and read Killing Floor. I am loving it.

I'm going to try out Simon Kernick next. Anyone got any opinions, good or bad?

I read The Business of Dying by Simon Kernick and found it very interesting. Without spoiling the book the main character is very complex as is the plot. A bit dark and intense but very good.

message 1030: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 10, 2010 12:29PM) (new)

Just started The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo... gets off to a really interesting start. (How far along are you, Esther?) Am looking forward to this a lot!

I read Perfume, cause it was a friend's favorite book. I finished it, but couldn't like it at all. Wasn't planning on seeing the movie, but Hoffman and Rickman might get me to change my mind.

message 1031: by Chris (new)

Chris (cdsmith15) Thanks Donna. Thats the one I've picked up. Finished Killing Floor by Lee Child, it was brilliant. Got the small matter of Flesh House by Stuart MacBride before getting stuck into The Business of Dying by Simon Kernick.

message 1034: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (perseverance) | 1 comments Hello, I'm new here. I've just finished all but two of Robert Crais's Elvis Cole/Joe Pike novels. I missed Indigo Slam and Sunset Express. While I wait to get my hands on those two, I have started reading Die Trying by Lee Childs. I read the Killing Floor a while back. I tend to get into a series and doggedly follow it until something shiny distracts my attention.

message 1035: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 464 comments Welcome, Pamela! You mentioned two of my favorite authors. I still have Lee Child's latest calling to me from my shelf.

I'm currently reading Medicus: A Novel of the Roman Empire by Ruth Downie, a mystery set during the Roman Empire. I just started it but so far I'm not feeling the time period.

Hi Dorie, I read Medicus awhile ago and while I liked it and liked the main character I too had some problems with the setting.

Just started this one, Susanna. It's been on my shelf forever. I'm a little ways in and really like the main character, she's really clever.

Donna, I gave it a try but unfortunately just couldn't stick with it. It just wasn't grabbing me. I saw in the bookstore today that there was a sequel though, so the book must have done pretty well.

message 1041: by Ananth (new)

Ananth Subramanian I just finished reading 2nd Chance by James Patterson. This is my third or fourth crime novel by American Crime authors. They follow a pattern. Plenty of shoot outs through out ending in a dramatic shoot out more fit for a Hollywood movie rather than a novel. Every one hates every one. Parents hate children. Children hate parents.Every third page is about hate or anger. The detective gets involved in romance which is more of a side story.
There is no investigation, analysis, suspense which one looks for in a mystery novel. And the language is replete with abuses which seems to be the norm.

Quite disappointing.

Mustafa-Jafar (mustafajafar41) Carl Webster's first adventure in The Hot Kid by Elmore Leonard. Infinitely better than The Hunted.

Way to start Darkest Fear by Harlan Coben.

Batsap | 5 comments I'm reading Dark Fire by C.J. Sansom. I love his Matthew Shardlake series. I've nearly finished the book, so I went out today and got the next one - Sovereign - so that I could go straight into it without a break!

I don't enjoy these kinds of books much either Ananth. Some authors seem to hit on this type of "template" for their books - which is fine I guess for people who like these stories. Not all
American mystery authors write this type of book though. Maybe you'd like some other American authors better.

message 1048: by Ivy (new)

Ivy (luvbug) I am currently reading Death in Still Waters by Barbara Lee. This is a book in her Chesapeake Bay series. I am only about 20 into the book so am not sure if I like it or not yet. I have not read anything by this author before so am looking forward to seeing how much I like her writing style.

I also really enjoyed this series. Sovereign is great and Revelation is outstanding! This is truly a series where I wish I could erase my memories of the books and reread. Have fun!

Kevin (manchesterunited) I have been a bit of an eavesdropper of the group and have really enjoyed the discussions. My name is Kevin and I live in Utah in mountain bike country. I just finished "The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag by Alan Bradley. Solid 5 Stars!
