Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Will finish The Lost Symbol - Dan Brown & The Quickie - James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge today.

message 655: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) So I was going to B&N to buy some books that I had on my list but I wasn't freeling well yesterday so I never made it over there. But since I was home early I dropped off some books due back at the library and there was one of my books I was going to purchase sitting right on the counter so I had to take it out so now I put Hummingbirds aside and now reading High on Arrival by Mackenzie Phillips.

message 656: by Chris (new)

Chris C I have finished Wycliffe and the Guilt Edged Alibi, which I enjoyed. Now reading 4.50 From Paddington By Agatha Christie as I am reading this one, the film is coming back to me, but still can't remember who the murderer is!!!!

message 657: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Donovan | 45 comments "The Devil's Punchbowl" arrived just as I was about to read about three other books. Started out a bit slow, but now I can't put it down. Does anyone else out there like Greg Iles? I think he's fantastic.

Did you enjoy All that remains?

message 660: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) After I finish I Capture the Castle and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and will have started and read The Alchemist, I really want to read a crime story. It is like not going to the gym and feleing that your are not getting your drug....I just need a crime story soon!!!!!

message 661: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Now I am going to listen to Red Dragon - Thomas Harris.

message 662: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Donovan | 45 comments Has anyone read "The Magicians," by Lev Grossman? It looks so inviting and I'm at that happy moment in my life when I have a plethora of good books to read, but have difficult choices to make. Also, I have Mo Hayder book and have never read this author. Any critiques, please?

I have recently read my first Mo Hayder and it was certainly NOT for the squeamish. I do have another THE TREATMENT which could be the next on my list to read.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 556 comments Just finished Grave Secrets. Not sure what's next - possibly The Girl Who Played with Fire.

message 665: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Donovan | 45 comments Thanks, Chris. I'm only squeamish about spiders in my bathtub and cleaning up cat furballs, so I should enjoy the Hayder book. Have a great reading weekend; we have an extra hour to read!

message 666: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

I loved The Girl Who Played with Fire. I highly recommend it, haven't heard anyone say anything bad about it.

Sandra, I read 'The Magicians' based on the premise, which sounded interesting. But I was disappointed in the book and unfortunately can't recommend it. It was depressing (unbelievable for a magic book) and I didn't like any of the characters. This may be just me of course, as some other people seem to have liked the book. But it isn't a happy book.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished listening to The Silence of the Lambs - Thomas Harris. In the morning I will listen to Hannibal - Thomas Harris.

Jeane, I wouldn't call it a crime story, more a mystery story, not much crime involved. Anyway, I really enjoyed the book.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9974 comments I'm reading Beverly Hills Dead by Stuart Woods. It took a long time for the "crime" occur in this book...it seems more like a story about how to make movies. I'm carrying on though, to see what happens.

mm, maybe I read mystery book isntead of crime:-) I am actually not really enjoying it at all.

Jeane (icegini) Fiona wrote: "I think I might read Grotesque next (or soonish) after my current one.

Jeane, put it down if you don't like it. Unless you mean ICTC in which case you better not if you value your life!!!!"

You know it takes a lot to have me put a book down! I have it with me to work so everyday I read max like 20 minutes but msot of the time ten. So the short reading periods actually make it less heavy to continue. But it just doesn't really hold me very interested. Also the writing style isn't my favourite.

I think it's a hard call to make a lot of times, because mystery is usually crime and crime is usually somewhat mystery, too. Maybe anything with a death and working toward the solution of "who done it" should be considered both crime and mystery.

message 677: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Last month in the bath I started The Comfort of Strangers - Ian McEwan so I will carry on reading that today as its only 100 pages. Then I will read Poor Little Bitch Girl - Jackie Collins.

correct. I was actually wondering why it would be called mystery, as I wouldn't have concidered it for even a bit.

I just started Hidden Moon by James Church. This is the second book in the Inspector O series set in North Korea. I read the first in the series and was slightly disappointed but a number of friends tell me this one is much, much better. I really liked the character of Inspector O and North Korea is facinating so I thought I would give it a try.

message 680: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 236 comments Jeane, I think one of the reasons that I enjoyed The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime is that the main character is an autistic boy and my daughter is a teacher and director of an after-school program for autistic children.

message 681: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) I think that is the problem for me. I mean not problem but reason. I normally don't like books for instance about real live things, drama or emotional things. I need with books other things, maybe to escape things in my live or maybe not. And I don't like reading a book written in this writing style. It doens't go on enough.

message 682: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) Kathy, at the same time I like for isntance in real life working together or helping with people who have these problems or older people for isntance. But not around my books.

I've been intending to read this for at least 5 years.

message 686: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I just finished Voices A Reykjavik Thriller. It was...meh.

Now I'm reading The Death of the Heart which is not a mystery but a psychological novel.

Carol The Winds Of Change-Martha Grimes

message 689: by Barbara (new)

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9974 comments I'm reading Hit and Run by Lawrence Block. It started off pretty well - a professional hitman named Keller is framed for a murder he didn't commit. Out of necessity he goes on the run. However Keller has been running for about 150 pages already and it's getting old. I kind of expected him to do something else by now.

message 690: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) Ooooo, after finishing I capture the castle I chose another book but this trime a crime book! I really needed it and it will be a good change on The curious incident of the dog in th enight tat i am dragging myself through.
So I chose my first to read David Baldacci book. I am very curious to see if I will like his books. The one i chose I think and hope is the firt one Saving Faith.
It better be good because for several of years the name has been following me when going in bookstores but i never took one of his books.

message 691: by Carol (new)

Carol I like David Baldacci's books. I really liked one called Wish You Well. It was a bit different then his usual fare.

Fiona - I'm so glad you have said this. I have this book as a sample on my Kindle and I couldn't get past the first chapter. It was so slow! But I will definitely give it another try. Thank you!

message 694: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 464 comments I finished "Still Life" by Louise Penny and will definitely be picking up the next book. Very enjoyable. I've started J.D. Robb's "Kindred in Death".

message 697: by Janice (new)

Janice Wegener | 53 comments I was going to buy The Curious Incident of the Dog etc. but glad I didn't after reading Jeane's review I read one time that if you don't like a book by the time you reach the same page as your age "throw it away girlfriend" I always read a book no matter how boring but now I follow the above and don't feel a bit guilty.

message 698: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 05, 2009 12:34PM) (new)

Just finished The Terra-Cotta Dog. Such a good story (the second in the series). Liked the history of Sicily during WWII, love the way Camilleri switches back and forth between the Italian and the Sicilian dialect--Sicilian when he wants to describe a typical emotion or situation, Italian when he wants to make sure the reader has understood a point. (Wonder if, and how, that is done in translation.)

A classic next: The Annotated Alice The Definitive Edition

message 699: by Carol (new)

Carol I thought I might try to find Martha Grimes first Richard Jury novel to read. I thoroughly enjoyed Winds Of Change.

JG (Introverted Reader) Janice wrote: "I was going to buy The Curious Incident of the Dog etc. but glad I didn't after reading Jeane's review"

I liked Curious Incident. I think if you read it expecting a mystery, you'll be disappointed. If you read it to see the world through an autistic boy's eyes, you'll find it interesting.
