NICO… YOU KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT O.o

I was thinking the same thing! I mean really? Nico was an awesome character....

Totally agree...

I totally agree...

oh dear
The heterosexual couples weren't mature either. Love is portrayed so terribly these days.

Wow. This thread could honestly be deader than my hopes and dreams, but come every year, this comment shall reign on

Why? What's wrong with Nico being gay? You've never seen people confessing their love before? What about Percy's heterosexuality and Hazel & Frank's 3 year of HUGE age difference. Seriously, what the hell was he (Riordan) thinking when he made Percy straight?

Well, I sorry for your homophobic family and you losing yours books. But hey, read on Kindle and you rmum won't know what you're reading. Plus, better teach you whole family a lesson here. If a guy/girl can have a crush on a girl/guy, then why can't the same gender have a crush on each other? Why can't they love who they want? People think it's gross? Inapropriate? You mum thinks you'll be gay if they read about a cute gay couple? Well then, she better accept the fact that not everyone is like her and there's no point making people like her. Change your views, mate. This world is already full of hate and prejudice.

Who is Will again? Solace kid? Son of Hermes...apollo? A healer?Did Will and Nico ever get together? Was it a fan made couple? Did Rick give any indication (unlike Nico. Think what you want but Nico's coming out had breadcrumbs full of clues. Some of you guys, however, have selective amnesia and stay pressed about Riordan's "scandalous" storyline.) that Will was gay/bi/queer? Tune in next season for the finale

We all know that homosexuality has yet to be embraced by everyone, so this is to be expected. But Nico is someone we've known for several books now. People identified or sympathized with him. And now they're turning their backs on him because he's gay. As if that changes everything.
Or maybe people like me didn't like the big reveal for a different reason: the circumstances Nico confessed under. It was forced out of him. That's such a terrible way to have a character share any secret, not just when coming out of the closet. It's better when you're able to tell someone when you're ready, not when it's bullied out of you. Nico was bullied. He felt ashamed the rest of the book. He had no choice if they were going to get the scepter, but that doesn't excuse what Riordan did. He hurt Nico and his readers when the truth was forced out of him. He should have handled it much differently.
Maybe that's partly why people are angry or repulsed.

And then this book happened, and suddenly he's not cool anymore.

So People are "immature" for having a different viewpoint to yours?
Good to know.

Heterosexual couples, how ever, seem to escape the scrutiny. Homo and Hetero sexual people and couplings are COMPLETELY the same (In my, and 63% percent of Australia's opinion) and to me, ranting on and on about the 'wrongness' of expressing a different opinion in a tweens book seems absurd.
How I dream for a day when this 'bombshell' becomes less 'astonishing'. A day when everyone who reads the chapter to shrug and carry on reading. Alas, it is a impossible dream, there will aways be people with differing opinions but some of you seem to need reminding of this. Some of the 'right' and 'just people who are 'bravely' defending the (human and natural) rights of gay and lesbian people everywhere need to step of there high horse, especially when they start insulting people with words like: "Tolerance is dead with you alive" and "You don't deserve to live on this world". These things are down right hurtful, and often shadowed by a (hypocritical) comment like: "There is nothing wrong with view points that are different from yours!"
Finally, I would like to say that I wholeheartedly support Rick as he works to create books that are filled with real world people, that face (some of) the same problems like we do. Characters like Nico and Muslim Samirah al-Abbas (from Magnus Chase) are the thing that raises Rick's work a notch above almost all other nail-biting action'y' books.

I love you bro

What is wrong with you? Stop it. For all you know, I could be gay.

I totally FORGOT about this. #4YearsGoingStrong

The debate is coming to a end all across the world (apart from some backwards countries like Russia)
50 years from now, people will wonder why this ever was a thing.

Lol <3

I’ve taken the same approach with my writing. It’s essential to me that young readers find a variety of relatable, positive role models in my books. Every child can be a hero. No child should be shamed or shunned for being different.
Nico’s sexual orientation became clear to me the longer I wrote about his character. It was not something I planned. I had no agenda. But when I realized this was a major part of his life experience and the reason for so many of his difficulties with the other characters, it would have been a disservice to his character, the plot of the books, and all my readers simply to sweep the issue under the rug and pretend it didn’t exist. Turning a blind eye to children’s needs is never an acceptable answer.
I’ve been lucky enough to teach all sorts of students – fifth grade to twelfth grade, rich and poor, from numerous ethnic backgrounds, with diverse religious traditions and a variety of learning differences. I’ve also taught gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. Some self-identified as early as elementary school. Some came to terms with their sexual orientation later in high school. Most had a hard time during the middle grades, which are tough years for any child. All my middle school students enriched my classroom. They made me a better teacher and a better writer for children, and they all deserve my support.
I am committed to writing appropriate books for the middle grades. This means no bad language, no gratuitous or explicit violence, and no sexual content beyond what you might find in a PG-rated movie – expressions of who likes whom, holding hands, and perhaps the occasional kiss. The idea that we should treat sexual orientation itself as an adults-only topic, however, is absurd. Non-heterosexual children exist. To pretend they do not, to fail to recognize that they have needs for support and validation like any child, would be bad teaching, bad writing, and bad citizenship.
Having said that, a good book, like a good classroom, should raise questions, not insist on a particular set of answers. It certainly should not ignore difficult questions. Whatever a family’s moral and religious beliefs on the topic of sexual orientation, I hope The House of Hades will provide an opportunity for parents to talk to their kids about what they believe, and why they believe it. Most importantly, I hope the story continues to entertain and keeps kids reading!
One of the most important reasons I became a teacher was to advocate for marginalized children – those who are bullied or misunderstood, those who feel lost and alone. As a middle school student myself, I certainly felt that anguish. As a middle school teacher, it was critical to me that all my students saw my classroom as a safe, supportive environment where they could be honored for who they were and express themselves without fear.
Good on you Rick. :)

Rick just wanted a well known character to use for his social political correctness gain. Nico had little known about him, so he was sacrificed on the alter of fame.
Doesn't even matter, the books were dropping in quality, and his PC fame grab just put a nail in the coffin. You can never trust an author who puts their fans wants, above the story. (.i.e. People asked for gay characters, and Rick provided).
I dropped Rick after this book and never looked back. I read the first book of his Norse Percy Jackson, and dropped the series too. Maybe I just out grew Rick's writing.

I agree with you on some things. Although for me, it's not because I find Rick's writing bad or catering to the masses; I just outgrew Percy Jackson and other books/series I used to read in elementary, middle and high school. Don't get me wrong, every now and then, I still read them for nostalgic sake but I've moved on.

And there are apparently people younger than th..."
Thank you. exactly. I not a homophobe, but this was out of the blue and unnecessary. I still love him but......he didn't need to be gay

Being gay is not just a controversial topic. It's a reality for countless people, children included. You literally make me feel sick. You don't deserve to live on this planet.
